Also, super late quote:

Wait, wasn't he an asshole in the last game? I've always just found him annoying. A decent character to play off of Nathan, and whatever female is there, but that's it.

Sounds like every single character from Uncharted flew over your head. I don't know how that happens with someone that's into movies as much as I've seen you be.
Wait, wha? Kinda mean, don't ya think? I'm pretty sure I'm allowed to not like a character. I never liked Sully. So what? I don't get what this has to do with my liking movies, though. Yowza.

I'm finally finishing Breaking Bad. 7 eps into season 5. I'm entirely sick of Walter and his shit. He deserves to die, whether by cancer or by bullet. His clueless stupidity has gotten redundant. The show is good, and great at ratcheting up the intensity, but definitely overrated. I'll try and blow through the last 6 eps quickly to get it done.

man I didn't know they made a Raid 2.

Gotta see that.

American Sniper too.
Under the Skin was pretentious arthouse junk. Lots of naked Scarlet, though, so it's all good.
Gone Girl was great. Rosamund Pike was fantastic.
Snowpiercer was good, but a tad overrated.
Grand Budapest Hotel was fantastic. I'd love this to win Best Picture
Winter Soldier - fantastic movie. I love seeing great action movies recognized
Lego - fun surprise
Considering The Raid wasn't anything special, I have no hopes for the sequel.
Guardians was a lot of fun, but not best picture quality

The sniper movie can wait until Blu.

This is a convo that should probably be in the move section. Oh, well.
4  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Dragon Age 3 on: January 21, 2015, 09:58:00 AM
I'm about 60 hrs in, and I'd be surprised if I'm even halfway done. I'm still overwhelmed at the sheer amount of things I have yet to do. I'm lvl 12 and haven't even attempted to fight a dragon yet.
I've crafted several things. Got some bad ass Masterwork armor on Cassandra right now.
I'm working on the Inner Circle quests now.
I went the Knight Enchanter route with my mage. The spirit blade is basically a light saber. Good times.

He's not the best, but Matthew Mc...god his name is annoying to type out...has done some good stuff. He just gets tagged in some shitty stuff all too often. I mean, magic mike? Ghosts of girlfriends past? I know there are plenty more but I'm having a brainfart. Plus, it's not like he is actually bad in those movies, just the movie itself is bad.

Honestly, screw the haters, I liked Reign of Fire.

I actually liked Reign of Fire too. But more in an Evil Dead/Army of Darkness laul kind of way, so I figured it merited inclusion.
It's an awful movie, but still kind of entertaining. The dragon is bad ass.

If we want to compare shitty movies I'm sure Deniro takes the cake in sheer quantity of garbage churned out. If you want to compare the two that's also interesting considering Deniro has played himself in every successful movie...where MM does show some range.

And if you actually hate his character in Dazed... then I doubt you even know what movie you're watching because he has the best quotes in movies history there:
http://youtu.be/Xqy62kBAiLk
He plays the perfect guy hanging onto the easy life, ready to fade into obscurity.

Contact was a great movie despite it's flaws. I thought it dealt with advancing technology nicely in a continually complex political climate. Tough shit they didn't show her landing on a alien homeworld. That's not what it's about.

When an actor has been in the business for decades it's easy to pull out shitty movies, even the greats make duds. But you're ignoring his good movies.

Frailty was amazing. One of the freakiest movies I've seen.
A Time to Kill was great
he was legendary in True Detective
I haven't seen Mud but that looks interesting and it's in my queue.
and Dallas Buyers Club was highly regarded as well.

I'm with you. I didn't used to be much of a McConaughey fan, but he's won me over through sheer force of will. Or just being awesome in some great roles.
True Detective is what really did it for me, but several other recent roles like Dallas Buyers Club also show he can act.
Mud is a decent flik, and he's pretty good in it. Mostly playing himself, though.

I'm not sure if I've ever actually seen Dazed and Confused. Apparently, I really need to rectify this egregious error.

Other people were watching football yesterday. I was outside with my mini chainsaw pole pruner. We always get a few nice days in January that allow me to get out and do some winter pruning.
FYI: It's better to prune in the winter, as there are less insects and diseases around to enter the newly cut open tree.
The more you know! *cue rainbow*

Maleficent -
1.5 out of 5 stars. Whatever Disney was going for here, they missed it by a long shot. They obviously spent all sorts of time and money on realizing the world of this movie. Too bad the most important part, the story, falls apart barely a half hour into the movie(and I missed the first 15 minutes!).
You barely even get to know any of the characters in this. Even Jolis Maleficent, which everyone expected to be amazing, just seems to wander around doing nothing all day, and smirking at the camera.
If they just would have portrayed her the way she was portrayed in Sleeping Beauty, this may have worked. Instead, we get this watered down pseudo 'nice" Maleficent that just looks and feels all sorts of wrong. Joli is great in the beginning. Then the script shifts to her being the misunderstood heroine, and you get the feeling Joli signed the contract without reading the entire script.
I didn't care one whit about anyone here.
Sharlto Copleys(who is generally awesome) king could have been interesting, but all we get is angst and anger. He's totally wasted.
The CG fairies are just plain weird. They look so...off. ugly even.
I figured this would end up being worth it simply for Joli, but that isn't the case at all. Don't even bother.

The Raid: Redemption -
2 out of 5 stars.  I'm confused as to why this is so revered amongst action movie lover circles. I don't see how it's much different from all sorts of other great action movies of the past. There have been plenty of movies with "super" dudes who kick all forms of ass. Just look at Bruce Lee movies for starters.
I suppose it was decently entertaining, but nothing special.
I might have liked this when I was young and stupid, and didn't care about a movie having a decent story and characters.

I knew you'd like it, Grim.

What I liked about the Mistborn series was how well everything was meticulously thought out.  Stuff I was saying "huh?" about in book 1, was resolved in book 3, sometimes book 2.  No hanging plot threads and, yeah, the ending was incredible.

I still need to start Alloy of Law myself.

Right now, I'm reading some Hans Christian Andersen classics like The Snow Queen and The Little Mermaid.

MEGA Mistborn spoilers inside:
Code:
I loved how it was all resolved, and especially that the Lord Ruler wasn't at ALL what everyone thought he was. He was a freaking hero, man! How it all played out in the end, and his meticulous planning came to the forefront, left me in awe. I imagine re-reading them is quite the different experience. Not that I will ever have the time.
I definitely did not see it coming that Sazed was the Hero of Ages. I just assumed, probably like a lot of people, that Vin was writing the bits at the top of each chapter. Heck, for a minute there I was afraid Elend would be it. I love how much he changed over the books, but am still a tad bothered by him becoming a Mistborn. Vin kind of gets pushed to the side a bit in the final book, allowing Elend to be typical hero material.
Still, that's a minor thing.
I'm encouraging my son to read the series. I think he'd like them a lot.

Admittedly, my reason is that I haven't seen it yet.

You guys are dropping spoilers in here like you're going to retire and not have anyone succeed you.

What spoilers? Nothing either I or Dincrest said would spoil any aspect of watching the movie. Knowing it's a simple tale, without typical conflicts, is hardly a spoiler. Especially with a movie so visual like this. Heck, take away the amazing visuals, and it still spoils nothing. No worries, man.

50 hrs into Inquisition, and I am overwhelmed at the amount of things to do. It really has gotten ridiculous. I understand the main story things are under Inquisitors path, and the inner circle, but I want to do a lot of the other stuff, too. Do any of the important quests time out?
I have yet to fight a dragon. My main dude is lvl 11.

The Wind Rises -
"The Wind Rises! We must try to live!"
As usual, a wonderful story, and a visual treat, from Miyazaki.
This is definitely a more classic, quieter, tale, than many of his other movies.
It's basically a story of love. A love of work, and a love of, well, love.
I see much here as a metaphor for those watching. I saw my passion for gardening and nature, in Jiros passion for engineering, and flying.
This is a movie that sneaks up on you. It's powerful, but you don't realize it until it's over.
Highly recommended.

Blue Ruin -
This was one hell of an intense movie. An incredibly simply story that takes a while to even let us know what's gong on. Even then, very little is ever explained. This is not a bad thing, and results in a better movie.
This is raw, and very violent, and not for everyone. Even when it's all over, we are left with questions that will never be answered. I was ok with that.
A truly great performance by Macon Blair. His mannerisms are so spot on. He makes the movie.

V.H.S. -
This could have been decent if it wasn't so damn long. Cut out 40 minutes of asshole guys being assholes, and you might have had a decent little found footage horror movie.
As it is, it takes way too long to get to anything resembling horror , and the camera work sucks, even for this genre within a genre.
13  Media / Brush and Quill / Re: Book Thread Continued on: January 12, 2015, 09:34:54 AM
I finished Hero of Ages.
Damn. I waited as long as I could, but it had to end sometime. Ever read something that you so desperately didn't want to end? This is one of those books. One of those series, actually. And boy, does it end in spectacular fashion!
The first book was great. The second was just a tad less than great. This book then comes along and feels like something else altogether. Like Brandon had so much more to say and do, and jammed it all into one crazy novel, instead of dragging it out over the course of so many, like some authors do.
This book feels so much bigger in scope than the other two. The word is so overused, but EPIC truly does apply here.
I can't help but think about how amazing these books would be as movies. Mistborn fights? Steel Inquisitors? Huge battles, Castle cities, gods, etc. It's like Lord of the Rings and The Avengers got together and had a love child. Except a kick ass girl/woman is at the heart of it all, making it even better.
Damn. I'm going to miss this world, and these characters. I know there's one more stand alone Mistborn book out, but I'll wait a bit before reading it.

Once again, I feel stupid, and am missing something, so i have to ask for help.
When you buy a game and it's soundtrack on Steam, where the hell does the soundtrack go? I've bought a few games like that recently, and can't find the music! Please help. Thanks.

Yodes, you had a redhead, and you let her go? Tragedy. ;-)

She sucked. Wouldn't put out and was a nut job. Plus her best friend was crazy. For our prom trip we all rented hotels near a state park. We'll after we been there for a few hours her dumb friend showed up crying and yelling at everyone for not inviting her.

My girl was cute in hs but after we went to different colleges we lost touch. She got an eating disorder and eventually had to be hospitalized because of it. I think she went down to 75 lbs (norm was maybe 115 or so). Now she's married to a useless worm and they have one butt ugly baby.

Missing out on that is no tragedy :)
Yeah, sounds like it wasn't. Too bad, though. Gotta love them redheads. Well, I would have if I had ever dated one. Now I'm married, and have lost my chance forEVER. Damn.
;-)
