2101  The Rest / General Discussions / Pat's editorial - I Don't Have The Patience For This! (Anymore) on: October 04, 2010, 03:51:57 PM
I'm surprised no one has wanted to chat about this. Go read it if you haven't yet:
http://www.rpgfan.com/news/2010/516.html
I can relate to a lot of what he talks about. I even mention it in my latest game journal entry, although it’s more in regards to ALL games, not just rpgs.
I am one of those “older” gamers(35 is old, right?) that has a wife, a kid, a house, and all the(time sucking) stuff that comes along with such things.  I still enjoy gaming immensely, but have found myself playing rpgs less and less, due to the overall time commitment.  I only partially agree with his comments on gaming sessions.  It’s true that I need a game that I can play in small chunks, and still feel like I accomplished something. I’m currently playing Other M, and it is actually pretty good about this.  I also know that the game is only supposed to last around 10 hours, which means I’ll get the “I beat a game” feeling a hell of a lot sooner than if I were playing a 35 hour(on the low end) rpg.
This is probably why I have all but abandoned rpgs. They just take too damn long to play through.  It’s the #1 reason why I have not invested much time in FFXIII. It’s supposed to be a 60+ hour game. You have any idea how LONG it would take me to play through such a monster?  If I were able to squeeze in an hour 3 nights a week, it would take me 20 weeks! That’s 5 friggin’ months. I can play 5-6 10 hour action/adventure games in that same time frame.
There are always exceptions. I loved ME2 and played that as often as possible, resulting in a 45 hour game being beaten +/- 2 months.  That’s still a long time compared to all sorts of gamers who seem to have the time to beat new games in a matter of days.
If more developers could just squeeze the rpg experience down into a more “reasonable” time requirement, I might be more willing to give their games a try. What is reasonable? For me, it is 20-30hours. There's no reason a good narrative can't be told in such a time frame. All sorts of games in other genres are doing it just fine. For now, though, A lot of rpgs will get a pass based solely on the amount of time required to beat it. Sad, but true.

Still playing Other M. I wish I had a large chunk of time to play this(or any game, I suppose), but it just doesn't happen. I pretty much play from one save point to the next, then turn it off for the night.
Anyway, I just got the grapple beam. Time to do some swinging. And perhaps some grappling when I'm done with that.

So I have a bit of a head cold and after Hindi class I'm crusin' around down-town all ne peshkom like and I see this 24/7 donut joint that has 24/7 falafel. So I get me some damn falafel and I cruise myself down towards the Barnes & Nobles and Westboro Baptist was like, protestin' some shit or there-others and they had a counter protest goin' on with people wavin' signs about how God hates figs and how God loves pirates. And I'm scarfin' my falafel, standin' outside the UDF there, watchin' this shit go down.

Major bro time. Seriously major bro time.

Afterwards I scarf some cough drops, and these are the strongest cough drops I've ever had by-the-hey, and head off to Swedish class, where I discover that one of the girls in the class is crossdressing (Swedish class is a major taco fest so that was kind of an improvement).

Nothing to do with gamecrush but my day was pretty chillin'.
You are one bizarro dude, my friend. Thanks for that.
I've never heard the term "taco fest" but I suppose there had to be a counter to "sausage fest" out there somewhere. Seems wrong, though.
2104  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: New "The Last Story" images and details. Jan 27 release in JPN! on: October 04, 2010, 02:53:03 PM
I was just looking at the images the Fan posted up for this game, and thinking, "Man, this looks really good for a Wii game."
It would be nice if we at least got one of the two.
2105  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tales of the Abyss 3DS on: October 04, 2010, 02:40:47 PM
Tear was supposed to be hot? Seriously? Here this whole time I just thought she was badass.
She was hot AND bad ass. Whoa.

Actually, I did like her voice quite a bit. Heck, I enjoyed Abyss itself minus all the fluff that added unnecessary time into the whole thing. No way I'll buy it again, though.

2106  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Castlevania - Lords of Shadow on: October 01, 2010, 09:03:28 PM
I meant I didn't understand the reasoning behind it.  It's not just used for Metroid-like Castlevania games.  It's used as a generic term any game of that style, even though there are plenty of examples that have been doing it before Castlevania hopped on the bandwagon.

Maybe it was originally used to describe the Metroid-like Castlevania games and then people co-opted it.  That would make sense, actually.

Well, see, I've never heard that term used for anything but Castlevania games.  That's why I was confused by your answer.

edit: No need to double post:
I went to download the demo, but it is not available on either my PS3 or the 360. WTF?
How did you get this demo, CD? I thought it might me a Playstation Plus thing, but didn't see it on that page either. That would be an asshole move, anyway.
???

2107  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Castlevania - Lords of Shadow on: October 01, 2010, 02:38:11 PM
I don't even understand the term 'Metroidvania'.  The Metroid part, certainly, but for me that's never been what Castlevania was about.  When was that term coined?
Don't understand it? You've never heard that term used for all the Castlevania games since Symphony?
Castlevania games that play in the style of Metroid games? Not ringing a bell? I don't recall when I first heard it, but it's been around for awhile now.
2108  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Vanquish, Bayonetta meets Casshern? on: October 01, 2010, 12:15:33 PM
I played the demo and enjoyed it, but this game just isn't a priority for me. Perhaps if Lords of Shadow wasn't coming out...
Even if it's technically a better game, I just prefer the more fantastical world of Castlevania over the "yet another sci-fi shooter" thing of Vanquish. It'll have to wait until the price drop.
2109  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Castlevania - Lords of Shadow on: October 01, 2010, 12:03:53 PM
I've read in a couple reviews how it's not like "classic" Castlevania. Then they go and site the Metroidvanias as being "classic" Castlevania! It's like Castlevanias 1-4 never existed! The true "classic" games were straight up action games. There was very little to no exploration(minus 2, I suppose). I enjoyed every one of them.
I have zero problem with the game going that route. I'm going to have a hard time waiting until the 27th(my birthday) to play this.
2110  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: GameCrush..How many of you would pay to play with Dice? on: September 30, 2010, 03:29:11 PM
I married a girl who turned out to be a gamer.  Just wanted to brag - that's all. :D
Me too! The first day I met my (future)wife was when I was playing Mario Kart 64 with a buddy in my parents basement. She said she loved that game, and wanted to play.
She doesn't play games as much as she used to, but has absolutely no issues with my own gaming habits.

This just seems so wrong to me. Paying money just to play a game with a girl? Talk about desperation.
I also agree that this should be an all-encompassing service. Not just guys buying girls.
From my experience it's never been hard to get guys to play video games with you :P

I wonder why.

BOOBS!!!!! :D
Wait, what? I thought Star was using "you" as in the general "you". Referring to other guys. I imagine this response was with the thinking that guys will play games with girls simply because they have boobs?
hmmm
Not altogether incorrect.

2111  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Beyond Good & Evil getting HD Rerelease on: September 30, 2010, 03:03:07 PM
Welp, now I'll have to buy it again. I hope the strong word of mouth helps it sell. It's a fantastic game.

No need to name call. Ash is just the messenger.
; - )

Anyway...
I freakin' loved the game, but have no interest in an HD version. I'd rather play something new. Or a sequel if it ever shows up.
2112  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Castlevania - Lords of Shadow on: September 29, 2010, 02:25:53 PM
There's hype for this? Maybe I'm visiting the wrong sites, but I haven't seen or heard much of anything. I read a couple European reviews yesterday(both 8s), and I see a few more today. Gamespots is whiny as hell.
As far as I can tell Castlevania is pretty damn niche nowadays. I don't expect this game to sell anywhere near all the big titles out there.
Looks damn good to me. I asked my wife to get it for me for my birthday next month. I've already got a few games to play for now.
2113  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Do you take notes on games? on: September 27, 2010, 05:07:51 PM
That one dungeon in PS2 with all those god damn pits in it.

Turned out that the ninth and final Nei item was with Lutz all along (the bastard).
Bingo! That dungeon(and lost more) was a total bitch. I spent hours with the guide and moy scribbles trying to figure it out.

No modern game should require note taking. Especially for RPGs, I greatly appreciate developers that take the time to add automaps, autonotes, plot summaries, bestiaries, etc.
You are also correct. I can't remember the last time I actually had to take notes for a game. Probably not since the 16 bit years.

I also remember the game going by way too fast. Plus, it was too easy. Coming from a guy who likes things easy, that's saying something

I actually think PS4 is one of the most well-balanced RPGs I've ever played. Pretty much any amount of grinding would make the game too easy, but if you're someone who likes going straight to the end (Which is what I almost always do the first playthrough), it was pretty much the right difficulty the whole way through.

Back when I played this game, I was quite the grinding fool. With rpgs, too.
...
ba-dum, tsh!

So, yes, by the time I got to the final boss, my levels were pretty darn high.
There's no such thing as a "first playthrough" for me. Just the one playthrough and that's it. You people and your free time.

Goddamn @ that curvy goddess
Which one?
Lower right looks good to me. Curvy = yes, please. My wife is curvy goodness.

Then again, knowing you, you're probably joking. You prefer stick chicks Thoren?
