I dunno but some of the imports that I've read over at Neogaf and other sites mentioned that it was a bipolar game. :P

But yeah, I'll actually judge the game when I get to play it.

Even if the game is bipolar (is that EVEN possible?), it would probably have more to do with the expectations of the gamer,  as opposed to actual quality. A game can be good, even great, and someone will still hate it.

Agreed Eusis. If I'm genuinely excited for a game, I avoid all the information for it because I want everything to be fresh when I actually get to play it.
Exactly. I love the GoW games, but would prefer not to know too much information ahead of time. I'll read the reviews, of course, but that's about it.

March is going to be tricky. I'm really not sure WHAT I'm going to buy, and what is going to be put on the back burner. Even a game like GoW can take me a month to play through. We'll see.

From what I've read... Bad?
This from the guy who so desperately wants to play PS3 Star Ocean, despite the poor reception(based on actually playing the game) of the 360 version.

The "good or bad" question IS stupid. Who around here even knows besides James? and he played the Japanese version. The western one could be better or worse based upon many factors.

Still, I'm with Eusis. There's no way this will fall under the bad category. Some people may not love it, but a bad game it will not be.

Trust me. I really don't have a problem with it. I like the editor lists as much as anyone. I just think import stuff should have it's own category or "list"
I'm comparing to other sites awards, as well as movie awards and such. Import, or "foreign", stuff is pretty much always given it's own category.
No big deal. Time to move on...

Honestly, I would prefer awards that only included domestic releases, but realize this may not be realistic.

Did we include a non-domestic game in our Awards?  Unless I'm mistaken, I believe that all of our winners were released in 2009 in North America.  Unless you're talking about the individual editors top 5?
Yes, the Editor top 5's are what I am referring to. References to FFXIII, ToV PS3 edition, etc. should not be part of it. Unless you want to call them the International RPGFan awards.
I realize the importance of import reviewers, and appreciate their input, but still think games only released in Japan should not be included. Just my opinion.
Like I said, my request is unrealistic.
I tend to use end of year awards as a way to remind myself of games that I missed and should have played.
edit: I forgot my other nitpick. Sorry James, but it's with you again. Fallout 3 came out last year. I realize they re-package it, add in the dlc and call it the GOTY edition, but it's still the same game. It should not be included in 2009 awards. Once again, just my opinion.

Dragon Age - I've played for around 20 hours so far and feel like I've barely done anything. I'm in Denerim doing all sorts of misc. side things.
It's very easy to lose focus on the "main" quest. Probably because it's not that interesting. This game is all about the characters. Speaking of which, I am still having a hard time deciding who to use as my "main" party. I like Morrigan too much NOT to use her. I switch between Alistair and Sten for my muscle, and between the dog and Liliana for the final spot. I don't really know WHAT to make of the other guy
Code:
the dude who tried to kill me. I forget his name
I also find myself overwhelmed by the sheer amount of items/weapons/things. It's really too much, and it takes a lot of time to equip everyone and determine the best stuff. I'm not fond of spending HOURS in the menu screens. After this and Mass Effect, I realize I prefer simplicity when it comes to the whole weapons and armor thing. Go to a new town and get a better weapon. Or find it exploring. I like that better.
All that being said, I am still enjoying the game. It's very addicting. I just fear it's going to take 100 hours to get through it.

I visit a good amount of gaming sites and have not seem this "ordinary gamers" disliking DA thing going on. Sure, there are grumbles here and there, but the majority seem pretty pleased from my own observations.
Gen, in case you haven't noticed, you seem to have a different taste in games than the "average" gamer. You always seem to be the one defending some game/genre that others don't find quite as appealing as you do. I would imagine that you would gravitate toward others(read: sites) that may have similar tastes. This could explain what you are SEEing in contrast to what others are SEEing.

Anyway...
I realize that Rpgfan covers both domestic and international releases, but a game should only be included in the awards if a least half(or some other arbitrary #) of the staff has played it.
Honestly, I would prefer awards that only included domestic releases, but realize this may not be realistic.
Reagrdless, I always enjoy reading them, and make mental notes to make sujre I play things I missed (like Suikoden Teirkris(sp?))

Ah,  Akiras opinions. Honestly...Fallout 3: GOTY Edition, Infinite Space, and Demon's Souls better games....Eh.....no........
But different people different taste. Looks like I'll love FF13.

How can you say those games aren't better, and then say you WILL love FF13, implying you haven't played it. Doesn't sit right...
Seriously, BD, your statement makes no sense unless you've already played the game. Wishful thinking really doesn't count for anything.
I imagine I'll like FFVIII more than those games, too, but I can't possibly know this until I play it.

Hm, that depends, having to draw magic and the junction system might not be your thing, a lot of people complain about those ;-)

Yeah yeah. I just noticed my error. fixed!

OK, so I just read Akiras review. His "major flaw" is not even a blip on the radar for me. I have ZERO interest in replaying games, let alone the time to do so.
I'm a music nut, so his comments there have me very excited. Add in amazing graphics, and a great battle system, and this sounds like something I want to play NOW.
2 months...

I've been dying to see Moon. Comes out tomorrow.

Sunshine was quite good until the final act, when it suddenly becomes a movie of a different genre.

Flower - The best damn Wii game that's not on the Wii! So I beat this thing already, and had a ton of fun doing so. That damn turbine level was just stunning. I enjoyed just flying around through the fields of flowers listening to the music. I will go back through some of the areas to get all the petals, and get more trophies. $10 well spent.

2188  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Iwata: Zelda Wii is coming this year on: January 10, 2010, 11:45:57 AM
They wouldn't be if people would stop asking for 200 hour epic masterpieces, and would just settle for good games.
I agree with you here. Longer =/= better. I'm all for the 20 hour rpg. Mass Effect took me 35, but I did pretty much every sidequest, so it could have been much shorter.
Anything more is just tiring. Plus, there are other games to be played.

I get what people are saying in regards to the Wiis "weak" library. It doesn't get a lot of the big name titles.
Bayonetta and Darksiders are two recent examples.
Then there's FFVIII, Dragon Age, the COD games, the GTA games, Assassins Creed, ETC ETC ETC.
THIS is why it is deemed weak. No mention is made of the many "smaller" games that are released for it(or, more likely, the naysayers are unaware of said titles). I'll readily admit to not being aware of most anything that comes out for the Wii. They don't seem to try very hard to get non-casual gamers attention. Nintendo seems content to sit on the piles of cash they've obtained from all the people who bought a Wii, maybe one or two Mario games, and thats IT.
I understand both sides of this argument. The Wii does indeed have good games. You just have to look for them.

Dragon Age: I am in redcliffe castle, after the village battle and the encounter with Connor. So many CHOICES to make. Reminds me of those dang choose your own adventure books, except I can't go back if I make the wrong decision. And no, I'm not making a million saves. Whats done is done. I think I'm off to Denerim next.

I downloaded Flower yesterday. What a freakin' beautiful and fun game. Played through the first two areas. Makes me miss my garden, though. Spring is only....so far away.

2190  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Iwata: Zelda Wii is coming this year on: January 09, 2010, 10:33:31 AM
I'm excited about the idea of the new zelda, but also a bit cautious. They really do need to change things up a bit, as the old formula, while still fun, is getting a bit tired.

As for the Wii itself...
I never touch it, sadly. But I also don't take the time to really look at whats out, and might interest me. I'd like to play Muramasa, but no way I'm paying full price.
Fragile, coming in March, looks good, but there are some slightlybigger games coming out around that time.
I'd also like to pick up the MP trilogy, but think they would work better on a widescreen.
You see,  my 360 and PS3 are hooked up to the 42" lcd, while the Wii is on the old 27" normal tv. I plan on getting a 32" to replace it, but that costs money.
Basically, there's been so many good games out for the 360/PS3 that the Wii is easy to ignore. Especially for someone with very limited gaming time.
