2191  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: Is the Playstation 3 worth getting? on: September 20, 2010, 10:37:49 AM
The only games I'm really considering are the following:

Trinity Universe
Cross Edge
Ar tonelico 3
and the announced or yet to be announced Persona game.

I'm just wondering if those are enough. I'm getting a bit tired of only coming across 5- 7 worthwhile games. That's why I'm so hesitant.

You have a peculiar taste in games man, I won't even risk giving you suggestions. The PS3 has exclusives to justify the purchase (more than any other actually imo) but I really don't know what to recommend. Maybe a DS (or a 3DS) would be more down your alley?
Thats what I was thinking CD...
I got a PS3 so I could play the following:

Valkyria Chronicles
God Of War III
Uncharted 1 & 2
The Last Guardian(when it comes out)
Wipeout HD
FFXIII(didn't want to play it on the 360)
Plus a few more. I've been more than happy with my purchase.

edit: Oh, yeah. It's also a great Blu-Ray player. Bonus!

Metroid: Other M - 5 or 6 hours in now. Fought some really cool Lava boss. The challenge is just right in this game. A boss, or a certain scenario, can seem hard at first, and cause me to die several times, but I don't get frustrated at all. I start right back up and give it another try, eventually getting past whatever it was.
I still don't like the upgrade system, or the other soldiers, but those are minor nitpicks. The game really is fun so far.

I finally picked up Bayonetta, so I'll be playing that after I'm done with (your)MOM.
2193  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: Tokyo Game Show 2010 on: September 17, 2010, 10:02:41 AM
Unlike most of you, I have zero interest in updated Ico/SoTC. I loved those games, but have already moved on. There are way too many games that I have yet to play this gen(Bayonetta, Uncharted 2, Darksiders, etc etc etc). No way I'm playing something a second time around.
Plus we have next month with Lord of Shadows and Vanquish coming out. Ugh.
I never got the Gran Turismo love. I have no interest in realistic racing games. I'm all about the Wipeout and F-Zero type racers.
2194  Media / General Games / Re: Castlevania - Lords of Shadow on: September 17, 2010, 09:55:44 AM
Hell yeah! This almost upon us isn't it? Oct. 5th right? The trailers look good. I don't have high hopes for the music, though. Expecting generic "hollywoodized" stuff.
My expectations are tempered. I expect it to be a 7 or 8 of a game. We'll see.
2195  Media / General Games / Re: Ico/Shadow of the Colossus Collection coming to PS3 Spring 2011 on: September 17, 2010, 09:49:25 AM
Already got them on PS2.

Will NOT be re-buying on disc.
I loved these games, but have no interest in playing them again. Too many good games out there I have yet to play.

2196  Media / General Games / Re: New Devil May Cry, bitches. on: September 17, 2010, 09:45:16 AM
I love me some Devil May Cry. Heck, I even had a lot fun with 4. His new design I do not like, but it really does come down to gameplay. If it's a blast to play, I'll get over it.

2197  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ys Seven on: September 12, 2010, 03:16:52 PM
For some reason I thought you had to do it through the PS3. You can just run component cables right from the psp to the tv? nice. That makes it easier.
Staring at a handheld for anything longer than 15 minutes or so hurts my neck. I prefer to be comfortable while gaming.

2198  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ys Seven on: September 11, 2010, 09:10:25 PM
I love Ys.
I don't have a psp.
I am seriously considering buying a psp so i can play these Ys games(plus a few others).
Thing is, I will probably only play it with it hooked up to my PS3 so I can play on the tv.
Getting to my point now...
How do psp games look when blown up on an HD tv?  terrible? OK? Still playable?
2199  Media / General Games / Re: Metroid: Other M on: September 10, 2010, 03:07:27 PM
I'm really loving this game. I'm probably about 10 hours in, closing on the end, and I'm absolutely taken by it now. It took a long time to build and sink in. It feels a lot bigger and more epic than it did when I first started. I realized something... I've always been comparing it to Metroid Prime 1, one of my favorite games ever made. But when I think about it, Prime 2 and 3 just left me feeling empty and cold. Other M doesn't, it's grabbed me. Is it as good as Prime 1, certainly not, but it's far more engaging than Prime 2 and 3.

It does have its flaws. The upgrades are really standard and predictable, it feels like the developers just did the bear minimum in order to have an intact metroid game. The music is incredibly boring. This was my problem with Prime 2 and 3 as well. Super Metroid and Metroid Prime had great TUNES... lots of catchy melodies amongst swirling ambiance. Ever since the first Metroid Prime, though, the music has become completely background-oriented, with no melody to speak of, usually no beat either, just long drones. I was really hoping they would bring back the melodic stuff like Phendrana or Norfair Depths, but there's nothing to be found. I have other gripes as well, but for the most part, I'm coping fine. I actually really quite like the story and acting, not sure what everyone's problem is.

I'm totally with you on the music thing. You may remember my post about the lack of good music in games nowadays. This, being a Metroid game, was one I was hoping would buck the trend. Sadly, it's been nothing but "noise" so far. I'm not that far in, but your comments have verified my fears. Metroid games are known for their music. Don't these developers KNOW that? I swear, it's like they never think about what the gamer him/herself may want. Do they make these games in a freakin' bubble?
2200  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: Super RPGFan Game Journal IV - The New Warriors: The Revenge The Movie The Game on: September 09, 2010, 04:14:38 PM
So I borrowed mass effect from my brother in antecipation of the release of ME2 on the PS3 (fortunately my PC can handle it).
I've been itching to get into this franchise but not being able to play ME2 kept me away from it untill now.
Anyway, this game is definitely all about the story, characters and setting. I think the gameplay is pretty weak, but the story definitely grabbed my interest and I can't wait to see where it goes. Overall the dialogue is great and there are great choices that are very different from each other whenever you have to answer something, I'm really impressed with the setting and the story. I'm glad these aspects of the game are so good because the gameplay really doesn't hold up as far as I'm concerned, I hope ME2 plays a lot better than this. They have to realize that if they want it to play like a shooter they have to meet certain standards because as we know the bar is pretty high there. I know it's an rpg and the game definitely delivers where it matters most but I don't feel satisfied with the combat, maybe I'll get used to it.

If you're sorely disappointed with Mass Effect's combat then you are going to be super happy when you play Mass Effect 2.  ME is basically an RPG with shooter elements, whereas ME2 is a shooter with RPG elements.  I think that's the best I can sum it up.

I've been hearing that a lot though I do hope that they didn't cut too many rpg elements. All they really had to do was improve the gameplay. Why exactly is 2 less rpg than 1?
You don't spend as much time in menus customizing weapons, armor, etc. It's vastly simplified. I actually preferred it this way, but can understand why stat junkies might miss it. The game is still very much an rpg, though The story and conversations are fantastic. It really IS a better overall experience.

Had to stop playing Other M due to the waggle causing my tendinitis to flare up. Not cool.
I went back to playing Muramasa for now. It's fun.
I also finally ordered  a copy of Bayonetta, so I'll be playing that in a few days as well.
2202  Media / Brush and Quill / Re: Book Thread Continued on: September 08, 2010, 01:44:09 PM
I've been reading the first Elric short story compilation, Stealer of Souls. I am not impressed. I understand how this may have been interesting back when it came out, but now it's just not working for me.
The stories are (understandably, due to the format) rushed and feel incomplete.
Cliches run rampant.
The resolutions all seem to be pulled out of thin air. Oh, look! I can use this plant to make a potion that will make us invulnerable! huh?
Then we have him falling in love with some 17 year old girl and getting married 5 minutes later. WTF?
IMHO, the concept of Elric is far cooler than the actual implementation.

I read through some "great fantasy book" lists yesterday and have decided to read the Coldfire trilogy. Ordered the first book from Amazon.
2203  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Mass Effect 2 - Shadow Broker DLC on: September 08, 2010, 01:28:55 PM
Thanks for the details!
I bought it new the first day it came out. I never got this Zaeed fellow or the firewalker thing. I did do the Normandy crash site thing.
Sounds like I need to do some catching up.
2204  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Mass Effect 2 - Shadow Broker DLC on: September 08, 2010, 10:17:08 AM
I freaking loved ME2 but have yet to get any DLC. What is worth it, and what's not? I'm not trying to hijack the thread. Just expand it a little.
2205  Media / General Games / Re: inFamous 2 Gameplay Footage on: September 06, 2010, 01:47:53 PM
I only played a 1/3 of the first, then got bored.
The new powers look like fun. Lightning tornado? Hell, yeah!
The overall graphics look the same, though. blah.
They NEED new environments. That's the main reason the first one got boring over time.
I DID like Cole a lot. Glad they changed him back.

Graphics look the same?

A bit refined, but mostly the same. The city itself looks almost identical. They seem to be throwing in more effects and stuff, but that's not what I meant.
Where's my lava world?
Where's my ice world?
The game looks like it'll be more fun than the first just due to the increased amount of powers. I wonder it all the baddies are still able to hit you from a mile away.
