2266  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: How long do you play games a day? on: January 27, 2010, 11:22:55 AM
Maybe an hour to an hour and a half on weeknights after the wife and kid have gone to bed. I'll try and squeeze in an extra hour or two on the weekends, but am rarely successful. I'd say 10-12 hrs per week on average. Wish I could play more, but that whole work/family/LIFE thing gets in the way.
2267  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Mass Effect 2 on: January 27, 2010, 09:48:58 AM
OK, so I played for about an hour and a half last night.
I'm almost shocked at how much they changed things. It's been majorly streamlined. This is way more Action game with a good story/characters than it is rpg w/ action elements.
After playing DA with it's ridiculous amount of loot and HOURS spent in the menus alone, this is refreshing.
Considering you can get good story and characters out of all sorts of non-rpgs nowadays, it's hard to say THAT is what makes it an rpg. It's evident to me that this game will still have more to it than your average action game. Adding in the conversation wheel and character customization keeps it in the rpg realm.
Still, you could totally sell this solely on its action elements because it's fun to play.
The ammo "system" is kinda odd, but hardly worth thinking about. I haven't played much so I have no clue what this "heat sink" thing is you guys are talking about.

Yeah, after all my whining, I still bought it. I'll take the night off DA and start this up. I'm just afraid that once I get into this DA will be abandoned. I'm actually kinda liking it now, too. Oh well.
2269  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Official Final Fantasy XIII Japanese Release Topic on: January 26, 2010, 04:09:21 PM
Either way, I can't really justify $60 (+tax) on a game right now... Especially given its 60 hours with little else in terms of sidequests and replayability

I'm having the opposite reaction. The only game the past 2 years I've spent 60 hours on was Dragon Age. 60 hours seriously isn't enough? I'm actually thinking it might be too long. If it doesn't have some variety I may not finish it. Unless it is the best game ever...
I'm with Blace here. Who sees 60 hours as not enough? I'd prefer games come in around 20-30 hrs, and have no problem paying for it as long as I am entertained.
I'm about halfway through DA with the clock around 35 hours. I'd love to be ending so I can play ME2.

Plus, the game is still a month and a half away. Save $10 a week?
Sounds to me like your looking for an excuse not to buy it.

@GrimReality:

This is something I was explaining to a friend of mine earlier, I thought maybe I'd pass it along your way. Maybe you'll get an idea from it.

---

there's a lot of corridors and long tunnels
i have max Survivability trait to see enemies from major distances, so I can prepare tactics
in a room at the end of a corridor, first thing, disable party movement
make them hold their ground, you don't want them following you
I take myself and wynne, a mostly-healer based mage, down the tunnel
leave my rogue/bard at the mouth with a song buff active, and ready to start throwing grenades
leave Shale, the Golem character who you have to get through DLC, which is free now
turn on Stone Aura to give the entire party Attack, Defense, Armor, All Resist, Health, Mana, and Stamina Regen+ bonuses
stack 4 glyphs of paralysis at the doorway, before opening it
and from the hall, cast Inferno at the back of the room
earthquake near the doorway
a grease trap in the earthquake and the paralysis glyphs
this way, once they sluggishly come near me, i cast Fireball, knocking them, as well as me way the hell back from the blast radius
hurling their bodies like rag dolls into the wall, back into the inferno pillar
which also sets the grease trap on fire
causing furthered burn damage
then when they get close, the glyphs start being set off
I throw a Glyph of Repulsion into one of the paralysis glyphs, which triggers Paralysis Explosion
which hits even your own party members even on Casual, be wary, it'll destroy you fast if not careful.

Then as I'm standing there without drawing my weapon, 15 enemies fall dead at my feet. Likely from how sexy I look.

::HIP THRUST::

PS: yes i play suicidally it is enjoyable
PPS: Vanguard in Mass Effect for life bitch.

THIS is why I'm not particularly enjoying this game. There's simply too much to think about. Honestly, I just want to run around and blast spells at things. All this strategic nonsense sounds like WORK. I will never take the time for that type of setup. I'll bet 75% of this game is lost on a guy like me. 30 hours and I feel like I've hardly done anything. I'm in the Dalish elf village now, btw. Oh look...more brown!
nitpick: The voices of the elves, dwarves, etc. don't work for me. They should have made them distinctive. Everyone sounds the same. Boring.
Too bad this gen has basically forced me into playing these types of games. Too much jrpg suckitude.
Don't get me wrong. I totally dig the characters, and the dungeons have been pretty good so far. I LIKE the game. I just don't LOVE it. With the small amount of time I get to play games, I should only be playing those I LOVE.
Hopefully ME2 will be more focused. The first one was, so I anticipate good things out of 2. I may be playing it sooner than I thought.

Something like Bayonetta, but I refuse to blow $60 on that.

I wouldn't really say you're blowing off 60 dollars when you buy Bayonetta, but then again the game's style might not be your cup of tea. I wholly recommend it though, it's a fantastic game.

The trailer was alright. I'd still be on the fence for the 60 dollar price point, but I can get the game for 15 dollars and that seems about the right price for me.
Not to hijack the thread, but...
I love the DMC games, and loved the demo I played of Bayonetta. I just don't normally pay full price for those types of games. I'm a cheap ass.
$15?! trading in old games? Some kind of employee discount? back room deal?

2272  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Mass Effect 2 on: January 22, 2010, 11:08:16 PM
lol. You have a VERY good point there. I actually hadn't watched that yet. Not so sure about the Martin Sheen voice-over, but that thing gave me shivers. Love the music.
But damn, 2 Bioware games in a row? I need something a bit less taxing in between. Something like Bayonetta, but I refuse to blow $60 on that.
Hell, I'm sure I'll end up picking it up anyway. Just not sure when I'll play it.
2273  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Mass Effect 2 on: January 22, 2010, 04:44:52 PM
While I am excited for ME2, there is no way I am playing 2 Bioware games in a row. I've still got a lot of Dragon Age to go, and I'll be playing something completely different in between. Heck, I may not get around to playing this for a VERY long time. Might as well wait for a year for the price drop. We'll see.

But how do you even know if someone is ignoring you? Are you assuming this or does it tell you somehow?
Personally, I would never use the feature. I'd feel like I was missing something.

edit: Ah, I see now that it's under profile info. I never knew that.

DA - Village of Haven and the subsequent "dungeon":
Playing through some Ice caverns looking for the Urn. I encounter some dude named Kilgrim or something. I don't like what he's saying so I fight him. He promptly hands me my ass. I try again. He hands it to me a second time. I am forced to go with the option I didn't like, as it is obvious I will not win. Keep in mind, I already switched it over to Casual mode. I imagine I'm somehow "playing it wrong"
I now wonder how long I'll even make it in the game if casual mode is kicking my ass. My next task is the Gauntlet. We'll see how that goes.

What race/class/specializations are you using, also, what party members? I've been having fun replaying this game using new tactics for each area. I tend to be able to come up with obscure and needlessly contrived ways to defeat anything.
Also, for pretty much any situation like that, use Shale's Stone Aura. Just think of being in that blue circle as being 3 levels higher in stats, and having health/stamina regeneration in the process. It's a useful way to deal with crap like, I dunno, a High Dragon.

---

I'm playing a Mage in Dragon Age right now because I deleted the Ostagar DLC, and I can't play my Rogue that had 100 hours into her. Fuck.
I'm doing Arcane Warrior and she is currently using Blood Dragon Armor and has been since level 7. She is a beast of apocalypse. I swear she just takes 1 damage from anything she doesn't resist, which is 50% of the time. Have at you, bitches.

I am an elf mage. My party consists of Alistair, Morrigan, and the dog. Seems to work ok most of the time. Someones always dying, though, especially against tougher foes.
Shale? That's the golem, right? I do not have him. I DLed the content with the code, but I haven't done anything with it yet.
That's the "problem" I have with these non-linear games. I don't know what to do when. Should I have already tried to get Shale? It didn't occur to me to do so.

2276  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Bioware founder says JRPGs "lack evolution" on: January 19, 2010, 08:32:00 AM
The soundtrack looks to outdo the first game's.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, and each to his own, but I found the ME soundtrack to be pretty sub-par. Most of it consisted of boring electro-symphonic rhythm loops, that never built or went anywhere. I just find it incredibly annoying when epic games go out of their way to not have epic sounding music. It's like they're purposefully holding back and forgoing melody driven material. Somewhere, there's a conscious reason for it, but I have to disagree. It wasn't terrible, but I found it pretty disappointing for a game of that magnitude.

I just realized in light of your commentary, the best track in the game.  Open it in a separate tab.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42Bjr9e-G8E

Watch me dance with the music in the background.

I'll assume your joking about it being the best track in the game, but this did put a smile on my face this morning. Thanks!
Funny thing about the ME ST is that I didn't really take much notice of it(minus a few tracks like the galaxy map) until listening to it after playing the game. It fits the feel of the game so perfectly. It does actually have a few "epic" tracks as well, that sound very MGSish. Good stuff all around.
Plus, I love the ending track.

DLed the demo for Bayonetta on the 360. Damn, this game is crazy fun. VERY DMC-like, but I was expecting that. Still won't blow $60 on it, though. Pretty much all action games I wait for the inevitable price drop.

I dunno but some of the imports that I've read over at Neogaf and other sites mentioned that it was a bipolar game. :P

But yeah, I'll actually judge the game when I get to play it.

Even if the game is bipolar (is that EVEN possible?), it would probably have more to do with the expectations of the gamer,  as opposed to actual quality. A game can be good, even great, and someone will still hate it.
2279  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: God of war III on: January 16, 2010, 10:33:36 AM
Agreed Eusis. If I'm genuinely excited for a game, I avoid all the information for it because I want everything to be fresh when I actually get to play it.
Exactly. I love the GoW games, but would prefer not to know too much information ahead of time. I'll read the reviews, of course, but that's about it.

March is going to be tricky. I'm really not sure WHAT I'm going to buy, and what is going to be put on the back burner. Even a game like GoW can take me a month to play through. We'll see.

2280  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: The Official Final Fantasy XIII Japanese Release Topic on: January 16, 2010, 10:29:00 AM
From what I've read... Bad?
This from the guy who so desperately wants to play PS3 Star Ocean, despite the poor reception(based on actually playing the game) of the 360 version.

The "good or bad" question IS stupid. Who around here even knows besides James? and he played the Japanese version. The western one could be better or worse based upon many factors.

Still, I'm with Eusis. There's no way this will fall under the bad category. Some people may not love it, but a bad game it will not be.
