Unreal -

About to finish Dasa Pass. The entire IVS Kran bit up through... well, Bluff Eversmoking is pretty amazing, and Dasa's a nice followup to that. One detail I noticed is how it goes to day from night as you go through the levels.

System Shock-

I made the mining laser asplode :3c Now I got some email to go help people on deck 6.

Yay System Shock!  Great stuff.

Thinking of Unreal always makes me chuckle - I was in a job where I didn't always have a lot to do when I first played it, so I played at work.  One or two times, I came around a corner and there was some alien right in my face, and I jumped almost right out of my chair... at my desk at work. :D

I was just actually thinking about making a thread about NI stuff.

Which ones on the PS2 would people recommend?

Disgaea (probably)
La Puclle?
Eternal Poison?

I've only played the portable versions of Disgaea, but I have loved both of them, and I heard lots of good things about La Pucelle.  Looked from the post above like they were going to include Prinny: Can I Really Be The Hero? as well, and as a Disgaea fan, I'd pay $10 for an action game set in the same universe.

You know, Dice, winter is the one thing that makes me reconsider contacts.  For the non-bespectacled among you, I'll just say that scarf + glasses = no more vision-style fog.

Just had to step in and say that I've seen at least three or four Kubrick movies, trying to give him chance after chance, but I've hated every single one. :)

And you know, everyone gets to decide for themselves what is and isn't art, and to a large extent, whether it's good art or not.  What about the time someone whose name I forget put a urinal on display and called it art?  Certainly a lot of people bought into that, and I definitely take something away from it*, but I don't think of it as "art."  More of a "statement."  Agree or disagree, I don't care.

Move on to something like Weekend at Bernie's 2.  It's a film.  Also, Dogs Playing Poker, a painting.  By widely accepted formal definitions, those are both art, but are they good art?  Not in their wildest dreams.  Not in my opinion, anyway.

So in the case of FSR, is it art?  That's up to you.  If you think it's art, is it good art?  That's also up to you.  I haven't played it, so I can't legitimately weigh in on the question.

* To me, it's about seeing the beauty in everyday things, and about realizing that a lot of work went into something as ordinary as a urinal or ethernet cable, and that the time of the people who made those things is valuable, just like mine is.

I think that's one of the first rules of programming: at some point, you will say "wtf?  That totally worked before!"

So... what were you looking for that makes this disappointing?
1897  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: Do you hate your life? on: September 01, 2009, 11:36:50 AM
I guess the good news in any thread like this is that anyone who reads it can say "hey, I'm not alone."  Everybody hates their life some of the time, no matter how good they have it.

For example, a few years ago, I listened to a report on a study that was done on happiness vs. income.  What they found was that once you got past basic subsistence, making more money didn't make people happier.  People who made 100,000 were the same amount of happy with their lives as people who made 100,000,000.

Supernatural - good show with an awesome soundtrack.  Wish they'd release CDs of the classic rock in that show.  (Disclaimer: I've only seen the first season and part of the second, but it was great up until then!)

OK, so my immediate impulse is to try to come up with a concept and a name.  Unfortunately, I got nothin. :)
1900  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: God of War I and II Blu-ray compilation for the PS3 on: August 31, 2009, 04:31:33 PM
So tempting.  I loved the first one, didn't ever play the second one, but always kind of wanted to.

Another minor quibble is that there's another puzzle that expects you to rip out some pages in your instruction booklet in order to solve it. I'm kinda...not really into that. =/

That right there is some old school pirate fighting.  Kind of makes me nostalgic.

I really really really can't stand Kubrick.

Glad to know I'm not alone.  I've tried at least three of his movies, and found them all terrible and boring, despite everyone else in the universe seemingly saying he's the greatest filmmaker in the history of ever.
1903  Site Related & More / RPGFan: The Boards / Re: Give me one reason why I shouldn't merge Console RPGs and Computer RPGs. on: August 27, 2009, 09:54:54 AM
Because it's more work to merge them than it is to do nothing and leave them alone. :)

I'm now... 8 books, I think, into re-reading Wheel of Time (don't care if other people hated it - I liked it enough to read it again).

Happened to pick up and start reading what I believe is the latest book in the Wild Cards series, Inside Straight.  George R. R. Martin fans, check that series out.  He didn't write it all, but he was the editor for the whole thing, and most of it's very good stuff.  It's a shame that the earlier books are hard to find offline.

And I read some other book about time travel just last weekend, liked it, and already can't think of the name. :D
1905  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: RPGFan Game Journal XX - Sharpened Pencil Midnight Bathouse on: August 26, 2009, 02:17:38 PM
I don't get it.

Sorry - I was foreseeing another "Baroque sucks"/"Baroque rules" argument.  Since we've already beaten that dead horse into glue, I wasn't looking forward to it.  (Long story short: Gen Eric Gui likes Baroque a lot, at least one person on the forums feels very differently.)  Probably should have kept my virtual mouth shut.
