2086  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Response to Final Final Dungeon editorial ***SPOILERS*** on: March 09, 2009, 03:56:39 PM
Deep breaths, flashrom.  Deep breaths.  I didn't think Raziel blasted you.  The closest thing was the "who are you to say..." comment, which I don't think is very harsh.

Some games lend themselves to a final dungeon, some don't as much.  Not an RPG, but look at Crackdown.  Its missions are divided up into a whole bunch of boss fights.  One of them in each area is CLEARLY the final boss of the area, but you can fight them in whatever order you want.  If you're crazy, you could start out with the guy who's supposed to be the last boss and work your way down to the lowliest of the low.  So: no final dungeon.

On the other hand, take a game like Blue Dragon, where you're chasing down one main baddie from start to finish.  Now that feels like it really needs a final dungeon to slog through before you finally reach the boss and destroy him.  Without one, you'd feel like you amassed these godly powers and really only got to use them in one fight.  (I haven't actually reached the end of that game yet, so I don't know how disappointed I'll be when I get there.)
2087  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Watchmen trailer! on: March 08, 2009, 12:05:57 PM
Since more people have seen the movie, I think now's the time to post Saturday Morning Watchmen. It has spoilers in it, so if you haven't read the comic/seen the movie I would suggest steering clear of it.

Good point - the PVP comic has spoilers, too, so... sorry if my lack of warning ruined anything for anyone.

I have to say that I've really been struggling with picking up the graphic novel and reading it again this week before I see the movie.  Part of me wants to, part of me says "it's only been two months since you read it!"  Aw, heck - I'm gonna read it again and just hope I don't overload myself.

If you're not into PVP, you probably missed this (like I did), but I saw it today and thought it was pretty sweet.

Samsung's what I've got, too.  Got a nice one, but don't feel like digging up the details on which one.  Loving it.

I'm not usually a completionist, but I feel like I'm pretty close to finishing up the Crisis Core missions, and you know how it is when you're actually close to finishing something. :)

Got farther in Retro Game Challenge - playing around with Guardia Quest.

Here's a pretty cool article about Retro Game Challenge:

I'm sad to say that I'm as interested in seeing the super-long director's cut with the Black Freighter stuff as I am in seeing the one that's in theaters now.  (Had to put it off because my wife had a headache - this thing's gonna be crazy enough without one!)

Esper - just noticed your sig.  It's not a movie, but I've been watching a bunch of Fraggle Rock on DVD lately. :)  Also watching Torchwood, which is really heavy stuff for me.  As I write this, I'm watching an episode of the old Wonder Woman TV show.  Gotta love TV series on DVD.

Dang - I didn't realize Matt Hazard was out!  Gotta get it.  Wonder if there's a demo...

Picked up Retro Game Challenge yesterday.  Just lost the 15,000 point Rally King challenge by croaking with 10 points left to go. :P

I've been slogging through the missions in Crisis Core - anyone here actually finish them all?  I don't know if I care enough any more.

This is one of the legendary games on the NES.  It's one I've never played, but everyone's told me for so long that it was awesome that I really wonder if it will be when the remake comes out.  It'd be the same if they came out with Kid Icarus again.

Good old Planescape: Torment.

I made a huge purchase and finally got myself an HDTV (52" Sony), along with a PS3 that came with Uncharted and Guitar Hero for free. Can't wait to get it delivered -- I've never had the pleasure of playing video games on a huge HDTV. :D

Oh, sandy - you're gonna enjoy it.  I got a 52" around Christmas, and it is awesome.  Congrats and have fun with it!

You liked Mirrormask, eh?  I did too, although mostly for the visuals.  One of the only movies I've actually watched on DVD.  It's too visual not to.  You can't just listen to it - you'll miss out on a lot.

Just asking, not trying to raise a big stink.

np - no stink raised.  And hey, most of us also like games that aren't RPGs, too.  :)

Mass Effect - Played through Virmire
Code:
What the hell? Wrex goes bonkers and gets killed. Then I had to choose between Ashley and Kaiden? It happened so fast that I didn't realize I was picking who lives and who dies. I picked Ashley because I figured I was already there anyway. Then Shepard tells Kaiden to "die proud" or something and it registered. Now I'm pissed, and even a little sad.
I'm going to do a few more side quests then head off to Ilos

In regards to your coded situation:

Code:
The Wrex situation is considered to be an 'impossible' dialogue tree - there's no way to get out, unless you put sufficient skill in Charm or Intimidate.  I was able to bully Wrex into realizing that the living members of his race would just be pawns using intimidate.

I went the other route, and that worked too.  Can't remember the specifics of how it went down, but you actually get an achievement for pulling it off.

Ever since I learned the power of Quake, I've been working hard on finishing up all of the missions on Crisis Core.  This is gonna take a while. :P

According to our site's definition, the first one didn't, so I doubt the sequel will either.  According to my own personal definition, though, the first one was, and I don't know enough about this one to say. :D
