2101  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: RPGFan Super Game Journal Turbo II - The New Challengers on: March 30, 2009, 10:48:07 AM
I'm a sad panda today, because I played Fallout 3 as much as I could this weekend, and now I won't get to play for about a month because I'm going out of the country and can't take my 360 with me.

On the other hand, I picked up my copy of Pokemon Pearl recently to see where I was at, did some grinding, and beat the Elite Four and the champ yesterday night, so that was nice.

You just reminded me of this Pink song (which I really like):

Stupid Girls

I should mention - there's some faux nudity in that video for a few seconds.
2103  The Rest / The Helper Monkey / Re: So, XBox 360 or PS3? on: March 28, 2009, 12:06:12 PM
Fallout 3 (maybe?)

Fallout 3 definitely.  They've come right out and said that the DLC (including the pack that changes the ending) won't be released on the PS3.

I have both, and frankly, I haven't been very happy with either one as a gaming platform.  I have liked the 360 better for gaming, because of:
- selection - keep in mind that I don't just play RPGs
- better performance overall - if one version of a game has framerate issues, you can bet your bottom dollar it'll be the PS3 version
- support for DLC and other bonus content

However, I love how nice my PS3 makes movies look, Blu-Ray or not.  If I played games online, I imagine I'd like the fact that they don't charge for online play, but I don't, so I don't care.
2104  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Article - Best RPG of last generation... DQ8? on: March 28, 2009, 10:31:59 AM
No, you're not the only one - in the other thread discussing the BRPGotLG award, I am pretty sure there were a few people who said they didn't care for it.  On the other hand, there were people wrote in to say it was brilliant.  It's one of those games that some people like and some don't.  I bought it recently, but haven't played it yet, so I don't have an opinion.

(PS - no one calls it the BRPGotLG award - I just thought that'd be funny.)
2105  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: KH Chess Set! on: March 27, 2009, 12:25:41 PM
That is extremely awesome... but I don't see how you would know which piece is which.  There seem like more different pieces than you need.  Or, wait.  Am I taking the chess thing too literally here?  Are they just intended to be cool little display pieces?  Because they are that.

Reading a YA book called "How to Disappear Completely and Never be Found."  Not too far in, but I really like some of the writing.  My wife recommended it to me, and I think she was right to do so.
2107  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: RPGFan Super Game Journal Turbo II - The New Challengers on: March 25, 2009, 07:53:06 AM
Finished up my time with Phantasy Star Portable and moved on... to Pokemon for some reason.  Must be that the commercials for the new version made me remember I never quite beat the last one.  Grinding my main team up to the levels required to beat the final... the elite... wow, it really has been a long time.  I can't come up with the name for those guys off the top of my head, but you know who I mean: the trainers that you play all in a row and you have to be at least in the 50s to beat very easily.
2108  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Periodic Table of Video Game Characters on: March 25, 2009, 07:48:12 AM
I'm gonna guess they've been in some video game or other at some point.  Just off the top of my head, Mr. Krabs was probably in the Spongebob Squarepants edition of Drawn to Life, if nothing else.

Finally started Fallout 3.  Got sucked in immediately.  I started out as a black guy named Jonas but stopped in the baby scene and started over as essentially Conan O'Brien.  Wanted to see how the different choices affected daddy's looks.

Then, I found out that his assistant was a black dude named Jonas.  Wish I'd stuck with my original guy.  Oh, well.
2110  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Fallout 3 karma/ending? No spoilers, please. on: March 23, 2009, 08:16:48 AM
I think I read that it comes out this week.
2111  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Watchmen trailer! on: March 22, 2009, 12:18:16 AM
OK - here's the real deal with the movie ending.  Carriage returns because I don't want to have to scroll to read the spoiler.

In the comic, Ozymandius has been studying Dr. Manhattan's teleporting ability, right?
So he teleports the giant squid to NYC.

In the movie, Ozymandius has been studying the energy Dr. Manhattan puts out.
The two of them have been working together to create a crazy generator that will
essentially produce infinite quantities of free energy.  (They cut out the bit from the
comics where Dr. Manhattan already revolutionized the energy industry.)

So using that work, Ozymandius somehow creates explosions in huge cities
around the world with Dr. Manhattan's energy signature, so everyone will think
that for some reason, he decided to kill millions of people.

Why he'd do that is left completely unexplained, but Ozymandius' reason for doing it
is the same as in the comic, and it somehow works.  For some reason, the countries of
the world all band together to be friends and (maybe) prepare for a fight against the
terror of Dr. Manhattan.

As I said in an earlier post, I think that this ending ignores everything that's happened
in world politics over the past 8 years.  Sure, it's set in the 80s, but the reaction would
have been the same then.  In 2001, it was "A middle eastern terrorist attacked the US.
Let's band together to destroy... Iraq.  And Afghanistan.  Does Iran or Syria need a
good butt-whipping?"  In the Watchmen movie, it would be "An American has attacked
us all.  We must band together and destroy the US."

So that's the deal.  Hope it makes sense.
2112  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Fallout 3 karma/ending? No spoilers, please. on: March 20, 2009, 11:58:30 PM
Thanks, both.  I do plan to get the third DLC pack, specifically because it'll make it so that the ending isn't the end.  I just hope it doesn't matter if I've started the game when it comes out (since I know I won't have finished by then).
2113  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Fallout 3 karma/ending? No spoilers, please. on: March 20, 2009, 11:38:32 PM
OK - about to (finally) start Fallout 3.  I like stealing in games, as it seems so often to be the only way to get the best gear.  Picking pockets, taking stuff from houses...  But I read that when I steal, even from houses where the owners aren't home, I'll get bad karma.  The thing is, I am otherwise a pretty swell bloke in games.  Always have a tough time forcing myself to the bad endings.  I'm just... you know... a swell kleptomaniac.  But only in games.  Outside, I'm a completely non-larcenous jerk. ;)

So my questions are the following:
- What does karma do?  Do people react to me differently based on it?
- Does the ending depend on something I do at the last minute (relatively speaking), or is it fixed based on my karma when I hit the end?

I apologize if these are stupid and/or obvious questions.  I'm just nervous about doing too much searching online to find the answers, and I was sure someone here would know and be willing to help me out. :D
2114  Media / The Soundroom / Re: In this thread, we share horrible cover songs! on: March 20, 2009, 10:08:12 PM
This is awesome.  I don't have any bad stuff to contribute, but wanted to say that if you want to hear some good covers, check out Coverville (http://coverville.com or just search for the podcast in itunes).  It's an all-cover podcast, he does about 3 a week, and I've enjoyed the show for a long time.

I seemed to remember an all-Queen episode, and sho' nuff, here it is:

Can't remember how good this one is, but it's pretty freaking relevant.

Also, here are two episodes devoted to bad ones:

I'm happy to say that he doesn't appear to have included a song by the Limp ones even once. :D
2115  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Recently Viewed Movies Episode 2: The Vampire Bites Back on: March 18, 2009, 12:30:52 PM
That reminds me - I've rewatched Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead over the last week.  I <3 those movies. :)
