2101  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Recently Viewed Movies Episode 2: The Vampire Bites Back on: March 18, 2009, 12:30:52 PM
That reminds me - I've rewatched Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead over the last week.  I <3 those movies. :)

So because it's a pain in the a$$ playing pinball between the Devs and QA mean that it's OK to release a known buggy product just because there's a way to "play" around it?

Unless I missed something, I don't think any of us are saying that we don't mind when companies release really buggy stuff, especially on a console that can't be patched.  We're just saying that when that kind of thing shows up, it's unfair to say "they obviously have no QA team, or at best a really crappy one."  It's very likely that the blame lies in multiple hands.  Maybe the QA team did not do as good a job as they should, but it's at least as likely that the problem was from devs or execs who for one reason or another decided that a bug should be left in the game.

WolfRider, your post was forged of awesome.  Thanks for writing it.

Guys, I have to say that his comments very closely match my own in the non-gaming software biz.  Sometimes, execs will say "I don't care what happens, you're releasing it on X date, and that's final."  They don't care what's still wrong with it.  They don't care what QA has found.  All they care about at that point is the fact that if they don't release on the date they promised, they and/or the company will lose a bunch of money.

This could very well have been the case with the Raki bug.  Even if the QA team found it and said "this is a big deal," if someone didn't explain it in exactly the right way to an exec (that is, in terms the exec found important), I can see the exec blowing it off.  Even with as long as the gaming industry has been around, there are still (and always will be) some higher-ups who are educated in business but not in gaming, and don't care or understand what matters to their audience.

I want to stress that I'm not saying this happens in 100% of cases, but it definitely does happen. When the crap hits the fan afterwards, different things happen - sometimes, the leadership actually takes the hit, sometimes it's the grunts. Documentation is the friend of the grunt in this, but it won't always trump executive social networking.

On the Fable 2 point, I have played through it twice now, as a good woman and as an evil man, focusing on different skills and not rushing through, and I've never run into a bug that actually stopped the game.  I had a few glitches when jumping off of ledges that stuck me in the falling position for a minute or so, but that is the only buggy thing I can remember from my personal playtime, although I know I've heard other people talk about bugs.
2104  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Watchmen trailer! on: March 14, 2009, 02:29:00 PM
Watched it yesterday, thought it was OK, but was glad I knew the graphic novel so I understood things like why Manhattan went from clothed to naked.

Didn't loathe the new ending, but didn't like it, either.  I think...

It's been made very clear that everybody's scared of the US because Dr. Manhattan is American.  If he really destroyed cities around the world, people wouldn't be all nice to each other.  They'd say "the US is the real enemy.  Let's destroy them."  (See also: real-world Afghanistan and Iraq after 9/11.)
2105  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Help in Finding RPGs of a Particular Type on: March 14, 2009, 01:49:11 PM
(there's also Jack Bros on the Virtual Boy, but that's not even an RPG.)

And good luck finding a copy even if you had a Virtual Boy.  That's one of only 2 or 3 US-released Virtual Boy games I don't own.

Working on Phantasy Star Portable.  Trying to put aside everything else to finish it ASAP.

OK - double postitude.

So it's actually pretty fun if you like Pokemon, but you can tell it's still a beta.  Items are very limited, you walk pretty slow, etc.  Looks like they've tried to streamline some annoying junk, though.

If it sounds interesting, play it before they get shut down for copyright infringement. :)

Good for you, Tomara.  My wife runs into that pretty frequently as well.  Very frustrating for the daughter of a mechanic and wife of a computer guy who has kept her eyes open over the years.

Sheerly coincidence, I know, but I had to say that I used to know a girl named Tamara IRL who would have had exactly the same reaction you did, word for word. :D

I am so checking that out. :)
2110  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Star Trek on: March 11, 2009, 08:22:05 AM
But hey, no accounting for taste I guess?

I know there's no accounting for mine!

Not weighing in on the particular merits of Star Trek V, but in terms of movies, I decided a long time ago that I'd rather have low standards and be entertained by a lot than have high standards and be disappointed by a lot. :)
2111  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Where are all the indie console games? on: March 11, 2009, 08:06:40 AM
My understanding is that the PS3 is very difficult and expensive to develop for, even outside of the cost of just getting the kits.
2112  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Periodic Table of Video Game Characters on: March 10, 2009, 11:52:53 AM
Saw this today and thought it was pretty awesome: the periodic table of video game characters.  The characters appear to have been chosen by using their names in connection with each element's abbreviation.  Hydrogen (H) gets Han (Solo), Carbon (C) gets Cloud, etc.

2113  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: The Animal Kingdom presents: Excitebots Trick Racing on: March 10, 2009, 09:41:39 AM
Too much.  Just the trailer had so much stuff in it that I don't want it.  And I liked Excite Truck!
2114  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Response to Final Final Dungeon editorial ***SPOILERS*** on: March 09, 2009, 03:56:39 PM
Deep breaths, flashrom.  Deep breaths.  I didn't think Raziel blasted you.  The closest thing was the "who are you to say..." comment, which I don't think is very harsh.

Some games lend themselves to a final dungeon, some don't as much.  Not an RPG, but look at Crackdown.  Its missions are divided up into a whole bunch of boss fights.  One of them in each area is CLEARLY the final boss of the area, but you can fight them in whatever order you want.  If you're crazy, you could start out with the guy who's supposed to be the last boss and work your way down to the lowliest of the low.  So: no final dungeon.

On the other hand, take a game like Blue Dragon, where you're chasing down one main baddie from start to finish.  Now that feels like it really needs a final dungeon to slog through before you finally reach the boss and destroy him.  Without one, you'd feel like you amassed these godly powers and really only got to use them in one fight.  (I haven't actually reached the end of that game yet, so I don't know how disappointed I'll be when I get there.)
2115  Media / Anime, TV, and Movies / Re: Watchmen trailer! on: March 08, 2009, 12:05:57 PM
Since more people have seen the movie, I think now's the time to post Saturday Morning Watchmen. It has spoilers in it, so if you haven't read the comic/seen the movie I would suggest steering clear of it.

Good point - the PVP comic has spoilers, too, so... sorry if my lack of warning ruined anything for anyone.

I have to say that I've really been struggling with picking up the graphic novel and reading it again this week before I see the movie.  Part of me wants to, part of me says "it's only been two months since you read it!"  Aw, heck - I'm gonna read it again and just hope I don't overload myself.
