You are of course aware they are making a new season of Slayers with the TV cast, then.

HELL YES.

Meanwhile, Bamboo Blade is adorable, Tokyo Majin Genpuchou Tou is FINALLY getting some love, and Rental Magica needs some plot to happen before I really get sick of it.

There are many schools of thought.

One school of thought says that you build yourself to have the highest starting major skills you can, and keep them solid as you level quickly, thus leaving you on par with the enemies.

I prefer this approach, but it does require some gumption, a willingness to level, and is rather dangerous at high-end depending on your major skills. Sneak is probably a must, and your primary.

Another school of thought says that you set as your major skills only those skills you use when you specifically want to use them. By doing this, you can effectively control when you level - by only using those skills when you're good and ready - and ensure great level ups and great skills compared to your actual level.

I find this approach boring because being level 1 with 100 Blades as a minor skill seems really boring.

Or there's the difficulty.

Or there's some mods out there which will make sure your every level up involves +5 stat mods, which removes the metagaming around skills.

Bump, and such.

Anyone got a hold of the expansion?

You people need to post more opinions rather than boring lists.

Here's what I'm currently collecting. Note that some of these have yet to even reach the 'Episode 3 test' (the second of the two tests to see whether I'll collect an animu - the first is ep 1).

Bamboo Blade - Comedy, Shonen Sports? - This is fantastic. Kendo Teacher makes a bet with his old master - form a squad of five girls and face his squad of five girls, winning a year's free sushi in the process. Drab premise, kind of spotty episode 1, then a completely retarded and wonderful episode 2 which featured THE MEN (headhit) THAT CAN PIERCE THE STARS and general abuse of straight-man characters and a lot of random good shit. Very turn-brain off, but I don't care. It's fun.

Dragonaut ~the Resonance~ - Dragonmecha, Angst, Squall - The big Gonzo one of the season and hahaha you can tell, wow, look at those women what. It's an unintentionally hilarious show because the main character is a supreme angstboy who looks like he's straight out of the latest swedish goth rockband but he perks up into a happy shiny loves-life guy right when the scantily-dressed heroine appears. It honestly looks kind of promising b-but prepare to laugh where you shouldn't.

Genshiken 2 - Manga Club Slice of Life, Jumping Out Windows- Uh. I don't actually recommend this if you don't know the canon - it follows directly on and does not explain a thing. If you know Genshiken you'll know what to expect - very referential and dry humour, the odd heartwrench, and there's actually a ton of material in here that wasn't in the original books. Good stuff.

Ghost Hound - What The Fuck, Is This Eva?, Is This Paranoia Agent? - Trippy. Very trippy. Also, endlessly, amazingly pretty. Only seen ep 1. It looks confusing. Will get more. Features Tiny Koizumi as one of the protagonists. Schoolkid gets narcolepsy, starts flying in spirit-like fashion when he does. Freaky shit occurs.

Night Wizard - Ripped Straight From Console, Where's The Stats Gone, Harem Party - Night Wizard is a straight-up anime adaptation of a fetch quest from the Night Wizard RPG and man does it show. The plot's retarded, the animation's sketchy, but somehow I kind of like it just because it has given up all pretense of sense and gone cliche-happy. Features the stereotypical 18-year-old with gigantic sword who just wants to get the fuck to school and not be dragged off on world-saving missions k.

Prism Ark - See: Night Wizard, Even More Harem Party - Yeah, uh, this is ripped straight from an h-game RPG from the looks of things! Even more harem, even more stereotypical fantasy party joins together to go take on the bad guys ONLY THEY'RE ALL FEMALE BUT THE LEAD. A-actually I really, really like this for several reasons - one, it's kinda badass in the animation style, two, it's a harem anime that COMMITS TO A FUCKING PAIRING ALREADY, and three, the lead character is using Simon's timeskip voice and talking about everyone banding together, guys, and that immediately shifts my brain into 'This is Fantasy Gurren Lagann?' mode.

Rental Magica - Totally Not Ghost Detectives, Whole Extra Episode of Notes - I can't think of many jokes for this one, damn. Okay, it's about an agency that rents out mages to people who need them for exorcisms or dispersal of latent magical fields or shit. Main character is a bumbling, Yuuri-a-like fool who has a super-future-seeing demon eye and a nifty eyepatch thing to match. Looks good - another 'big series'.

Shugo Chara - Why God Why, Magical Girl, Why The Fuck Am I Watching This - I-I don't know. Okay? I don't know why everyone in my house has started watching this fucking series. It's magical girl, okay, about a goth punk kid who's only pretending to be a goth punk kid because everyone knows she's a goth punk kid wanting to open up and blossom and shit, and she gets three little internet-I-mean flying personae to help her and there's. eggs and shit and I don't know what god.

You're Under Arrest 3 - It's You're Under Arrest, heathens. If you don't know what it is go read up on your classic anime. This is more of it. No other reason is needed.

There.

No, I am not trawling through the 15,000 dating sim adaptions out this season.

Yes, someone needs to sub shetchbook already in an avi format.

Alas, Gurren Lagann is now over. My life is 75% less awesome.

But we have a Fall season to start watching! So let's begin with:

Dragonauts

HAHAHA SO CHEESY, WOW

GONZO DID IT AGAIN

Aware's saved my ass a couple of crucial times. Also, Ambush 10 is utterly worth it. The more completely free turns you can get, the massively more MP you save: vital if you're not Troubadouring.

Apollon sucks, mostly because of so much lag that any FOE I faced pre-6th stratum was dead before it arrived. Multishot is comparable, every-turn damage.

Too many points spread around on the medic already. I'm not having a Medic without Salve 2 10 and Cure 3 10 and at least a little revive for emergencies.

Eh, yes, the Hexer can help the Dark Hunter hit ecstacy, but when the DH has got all their binds at 10 and the Lands is helping out with Silencer, you don't need to devote another slot of the party to someone who throws strange esoteric effects around. I'd much rather have raw damage.
8  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Etrian Odyssey on: August 25, 2007, 08:46:20 AM
COMPLETO.

Now just the 6th strata to do. And the 3 supermonsters to take down. And the ultimate equip to collect. And...

Final party builds were something like:

Landsknecht - Full-on Axe. Crush, Hell Cry, don't need a lot else. Might be worth resting them back to elemental swordblows, but eh?

Survivalist - Okay, so the Survivalist did end up being really useful. Max Ambush and Aware, Bows and Multishot. Forget Apollyon it's a peace of crap that's only useful for the pre-emptive effect. Free turns are good.

Protector - Ended up ditched from my party. :( But will probably be going straight back in: pre-emptive elemental resists are very hax against the optional bosses. To be fair, they weren't ditched for being useless, far from it: pushing every boss to only do 2 damage as I stack Immunize and Defender was funny as hell. But not enough damage output.

Dark Hunter - Ended up REALLY REALLY USEFUL. Asides from general high damage they can boost their damage even higher with any of their base bind skills, for incredibly cheap.

Ronin - Midareba. NEXT

Medic - I still can't imagine not having one. Troubadour's Heal is too slow over time, Protector doesn't get the all-important Cure 3 for my 600HP landsknecht.

Troubadour - OKAY. I admit it. Relaxing 10 is pretty damn hax as my medic recovers a grand total of 30 mp a round or something.

Hexer - Who's that again?

Elementalist - Ditched from my party in main game but immediately put in for bonus strata - for level 26, Jolt is a must.
9  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Wild Arms 5 on: August 25, 2007, 08:39:26 AM
A full-length (not short, like Wild Arms 4) world-mapped millenium-puzzled Wild Arms packed with silly references and cameos and using the WA4 battle system which remains one of the most playable in recent times?

TSG WANT.

Hahah oh wow.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (Farewell, Despairing Teacher) is an anime from the Pani Poni Dash guys about a suicidally emo teacher and a psychotic, eternally optimistic student. And everyone else in the class being insane as well. It's amazingly well-drawn, will screw with your mind like crazy, and has a very slick style that also manages to be extremely funny. Watch it, watch it right now.

Also, the OP and ED are some of the best I've seen in a long while.

... also, I finally got around to picking up Lucky Star beyond episode 1. If you purposefully ignore the first episode, the series is quite palatable indeed.

Moves don't always use Arms. Spells or gaze attacks tend to use Head. Moves such as Charge or Kick or Rush use legs. Bind appropriately.

Hmm. I deliberately left Cure 2 on the Protector alone because of the sheer advantage of Cure 3. When it comes down to it, a maxed Cure 3 costs the same MP as a level 1 Cure 2 and is guaranteed to heal all of a character's HP. It's infinitely the biggest advantage a medic has.

2nd edition D+D was horribly uncustomizable. Base stats, and that was it. So much for Eye of the Beholder.

Meanwhile, would you like your Etrian Odyssey protector to be a Defence Buffer? A Backup Healer? How about a Parry Build? Or an Elemental Defender.

I dunno, you look at kits and the like, and it becomes much more customizable.  It's not D20 D&D, but it's more customizable than, say, (not Advanced) D&D.

Yeah, I'll agree with KeeperX on this one. You've got a handful of base classes, a ton of "kits" (basically, subclasses under each base class), and few races to choose from (and if you are utilizing the Complete Book of humanoids, there are many more races). Then, you get to select your weapon and non-weapon proficiencies (much like skills). In the end there is a good bit of customizing to do. Most video games don't have the level of customization that AD&D has.

On a different subject, I made it dungeon level 15 in Etrian Odyssey today. How far is everyone else?

While true - see Baldur's Gate 2 for a prime example - a) the original comment was about Eye of the Beholder, which was very lacking, and b) the act of selecting a kit still locks you into an ability path. Unless you get to really high-up-there levels and start picking epic abilities, you have at level 1 selected what will happen for the next 20 levels. Strictly speaking, this isn't 'customization' - it's 'selection'.

I'm currently pottering around B11F / B12F, having rested my guys twice (yes, twice: I like to play with different builds).

Landsknecht is currently a sword user. Hell Cry and Allslash ahoy. Axes are nice, sure, but I do plenty of damage with swords too and Allslash allows for the clearing of nasty random battles in an instant.

Survivalist currently has 10 Mine, Chop, and Take, and that's it. Lololol quest-only character.

Protector was a tough choice. Until I got Immunize it was easy: Defender, Fortify, Provoke. 10 damage from FOEs, gogogo. With the onset of Immunize to take me past the three-buff limit, I've had to drop Fortify, and am using it only for Smite requirements - Even then, Provoke 10's defence boost and taunt is not inconsequential, so I can relatively easily lock down an FOE. I expect I'll pay for not taking the elemental defenders at some point.

Dark Hunter's easy. Take the three bind moves and Ecstacy. Sorted. Another top-notch way to lock down FOEs.

The Medic is kind of tricky: points scattered all over the place in reqs. 3 points in Cure for Salve, 3 points in Salve for... Immunize, was it? 3 points in Cure 2 for Salve 2. 10 points in Cure 3 is a nobrainer, ditto Salve 2 and Immunize.

The Elementalist has 7 Fire Up, 3 Fire, 10 Flame, 10 Inferno, 10 TP Up. Now that that's done we'll do exactly the same on Ice.

The Ronin has a ton of neat stuff. As it is I'm looking at getting almost entirely the Overhead stance and passive boosts.

Who's on it? I have to say, I'm quite impressed at recent changes - the enhancements system has really been revamped and there's some pretty impressive instances now. Also, more loot.
