16  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Looking for turn-based RPGs on: December 21, 2011, 08:54:23 AM
For PC there's also Septerra Core, I know it's turn based but also uses an ATB system which I can't quite remember how it all works out because I haven't played it since release. It's definitely a bit of an oddity at least for when it came out because back then PC games were PC games and console games were console games but this played just like a console game but was for PC. It's also available on GoG though for a decent price.

Most anything else I can think of that would fit in your criteria has already been mentioned, ie. Infinity Engine games. Essentially though if you look into most PC rpgs made in the 90s or early 2000s that are not first-person they will be turn based.

I asked for:

Skyrim
4 6L6 tubes for my guitar amp
Ocarina
Guitar Strap
Wallet
Microsoft Points
Kinect
Wacom Tablet
A Dance of Dragons
The Crippled God
Star Wars Blu-Ray

And a few other things,. Really I expect one or two of those things and if I get none I won't be sad. I bought my girlfriend a few board games, some yoga pants, a new toaster, a nice necklace, a few books and a movie and I might get her an ipad nano.I think that's it.

I was totally stoked about this until i realized that due to crazy life changes that I did not have a chance to really check out any new music from this year. Dystopia from Iced Earth is I think the only real release from this year that I really got a chance to dive into and even using that term is a stretch. With that said Dystopia was a pretty awesome album and the dude from Into Eternity is doing a much better job than I thought he would filling in Matt Barlow's shoes.

Ya, I feel like I'm being led around, I watch this whole season so far where nothing happens until the last 5 minutes of this episode and now I'm frothing at the mouth for more. It's annoying that these guys have the capability to make a great show, I thought those last 5 minutes were one of the most intense times that I spent watching TV but I also felt that the show didn't really earn the response I got from the scene. Just a few months of waiting around to start bitching again.

Still with RIM. Fixing servers now though instead of phones. Same amount of money but dealing with a much nicer class of people. Only issue is I know nothing about networks and am dealing with vastly networked environments. I know 70% about one box (BES) and 10% about another (Exchange and AD) and people seem to think I know 150% about everything they have. That part is a bit annoying.
21  The Rest / General Discussions / Re: What classes do you enjoy playing in RPGs? on: November 15, 2011, 05:38:26 PM
Really it depends on the game itself. In PnP games I've played almost every class/archetype I can think of, I haven't done any tabletop in awhile but I was pretty big into Rangers and Druids at the end. In video games it really depends on how the game plays as I love playing all roles (in MMOs I have dedicated characters to dps, tanking and healing) and some games will really benefit certain play styles over others. I find that almost all WRPGs favor rogue classes, or at least skills, so I gravitate towards those.

Also if the first few floors don't give you good power-ups just die to restart and hope you get a good first floor. Also if you get the door to the room where you can sacrifice hearts after beating a boss take the inverted cross, it breaks the game pretty good since you get faster and can fly. The unicorn horn item also makes bosses pretty easy, a single usage will get them to about 50% health. It's really just a matter of luck to get a good spread of power-ups and items through the first couple of floors or it becomes a lot more challenging.
23  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Shining Force Releases on: October 28, 2011, 06:24:48 PM
I actually didn't mind Shining Force Neo as a game. As a Shining Force game it obviously was a dumb idea and failed the basic naming convention of the whole Shining series. I personally think the game would have gotten a lot less flak if it was just Shining <anything> instead of Force. It is pretty brainless and at most points is either fall asleep easy or ball crushingly hard (read: cheap) but it was one of the last PS2 games I really played a lot of. I could never find EXA for less then a billion dollars.

That said, SF2 is still my favorite SRPG and I can't see anything dethroning it. Maybe if Sega ever releases all of SF3.

In the newest Developer chat there is not going to be any sanctuary cities and in fact it looks as though they're putting in more pvp bonuses for trying to raid the cities. Also the vendors are spread around Pandaria to promote travel and everyone just sitting in the main city so there's a bit more going on then just sitting in the hub and doing nothing.
25  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / Re: World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria on: October 26, 2011, 07:15:30 PM
I don't think WoW lends itself to such class-based segregation anymore especially since it's a lot more focused on PVE dugeons and raids then it was in Vanilla. I know it was just one class each but it's gotta be a pain in the ass to balance any PVE encounter when a whole faction has access to a completely different set of abilities than another. WoW had a bit more of a PVP focus when it was released (not a strong one obviously but there was a lot of good fun world PVP going on there for awhile) and I think that type of gameplay works well with having different factions and classes.

I liked Shatt but Dalaran was boring and I'm not a fan of neutral hubs myself. I killed Arthas, why do I care that some piddly mage doesn't want me to punt a gnome over the side?

I stopped reading once I read that Phantasy Star was released on the Genesis. That's such a basic bit of information that even if I cared I wouldn't be able to bother or trust anything that came after it
27  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / Re: World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria on: October 22, 2011, 01:42:46 PM
I am completely sold on everything so far that the expansion is selling me. I haven't played in almost a year and once 4.3 hits I might sign back up. Monks, pokemon, the new talent system, pve events, the return of world raid bosses. Pandaren don't seem too bad, I like the art style and the new dungeon and raid design make it seem as though I may be able to return to them which would be awesome because I don't have nearly the time I did before.
28  Media / Miscellaneous Games / Re: Batman Arkham City on: October 19, 2011, 08:03:56 AM
Well, if you want to discourage people from buying used in general you might not want to ink a deal for a free code with the retail chain that leads in used sales. They can't just throw offers like that with every game, so they'll probably lose out on a 3DS or Wii game.

I don't think it's so much to discourage used sales as to make some money off of them. There are a lot of players that don't buy new games and really if they're gonna buy used anyways what's better: hoping that person pays $10 for a code or having the retailer lay down the money beforehand?

As for the game itself? So far it's amazing.
29  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / Re: FFXIV 2.0 - Holy Shit!? on: October 14, 2011, 09:11:16 PM
I'm pretty much done with MMOs and FFXIV definitely left a hell of a bad taste in my mouth. I literally can't go back but I'm interested to see how 2.0 performs. The screens sure are pretty.

I just realized a couple days ago that it was coming up this Sunday. I'm looking forward to it, but with tempered expectations. Unlike a lot of people, I was not happy with the show by the end of the 6 episode run. It started out great, then went downhill from there. Hopefully, someone has a clear vision as to where to go with this, and knocks it out of the park. We'll see.

Well considering Frank Darabont fired the whole writing staff and then he got fired by the network while having the budget slashed and told to film indoors because it's cheaper I'm a little worried about the whole thing. It's certainly possible for this season to be amazing and I really hope it is, there's still a lot of good people working on the show so I have my fingers crossed.
