Skies all the way. The music, characters, and game-play are superior.

I still remember being creeped out by the dark rift... *shudder*

When I see Nadesico I tend to remember that awful Prince of Darkness movie and how it doomed the series to being early to mid game filler units in SRW games.

So true and so sad, haha.

Anyone remember Landstalker? A reboot/remake of that would be nice as well.

Thanks! It was the good ol days of space opera, surprised someone recognized it!

You're right about VC carrying on the torch, maybe throw in some Vandals into the next one! Golden Sun usually fills my Camelot/Motoi Sakuraba needs anyways.

Any non online Phantasy Star remake would be great....I'll even take III. Sega can take that art/graphics style from Valkyria Chronicles and use it on a Phantasy Star or even Skies of Arcadia (most fitting).

Also, Camelot Software Planning can make a killing if they'd take a break from Nintendo sports games and bring back the real Shining series. One can dream...
5  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: In an age of re-makes, I wish... (outside the realm of Square) on: July 27, 2011, 09:50:52 AM
The original Grandia

Breath of Fire(any except DQ)

Dragon Force

Shining of the Holy Ark

Albert Odyssey

Tales of Destiny

I'd love to see the SaGa 3 DS remake make it to the states... though that will never happen.

I'm sure there are a ton more, but I will leave it at that for now.

All those, plus Sega's "Oasis" series. Bring back SNK's Crystalis as well!!!!
6  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Nier on: January 24, 2011, 03:38:18 PM
I picked up Nier, as well as Drakengard 1&2 this month on a old game buying binge. This forum is making me want to play them so bad, but I need to beat Disgaea 3 and YSIV on my PSP...*head explodes*

if you think the graphics in any of the gba fire emblems are shoddy the DS ones are worse. only a blind hardcore fan could like the DS FE's.

Or a casual fan who can appreciate it for being a good game and not let things like graphics or story get in the way of that.

My only problems with graphics is when it is *clear* they didn't try.
Disgaea 3 was an example of that, the "upgrade" to HD was absolutely laughable.

I'm pretty lax when it comes to graphics too...But I do agree with the effort part. Remember Vandal Hearts on PSX? Felt like it should of have been on the SNES...especially compared to say FFT or even Dragon Force on the Saturn.

Loved:

FFT (PSP/PSX)
Disgaea series
Advance Wars Series
Ogre Battle Series

Hated:

Idea Factory ones
Luminous Arc series
FFT Advance series

Tactics does count right? I believe the story has aged well. Going from a pawn to a real catalyst in the war really made me feel Ramza's development and motivations. Also, I think the story took the whole "church is evil" theme to a different level...as well as "war sucks, no one wins in the end".

For main series...I'll have to say X was the best. The immersion was there save for the cheesy parts...heck it was so good I actually played through X-2 for closure. I wouldn't put myself through that torture if X's story was horrid...haha

Not playing down your tastes or anything, but it's also feasible that you played it because of the production values at the time, and because of your own investment in the game. I certainly feel that way with some games. Only weeks, months, or years later do I really sit down and analyse what I've been playing. It takes time to get away from your fandom, as well as a want to eradicate as much bias as possible. It's hard, but necessary for earnest critique in the end.

I realise not everyone likes doing this with their media, but I'm a big fan of analysis. I like a certain amount of being honest with myself about questions of quality, and I do encourage it in others.

I don't think you are at all. But we have to remember these are games we've played years ago anyways (most of us). I'm just speaking from my recent replays of these games. Although it's interesting to read unbiased opinions on games (especially pre-purchase). I believe it's the personal fandom, bias, and connections to the story the really make it "stick" to me. Like VIII used to me my favorite story...till I grew up...hehe

Sitting in my castle and playing Chinchirorin (3 dice game) all day is awesome. Still need to go back and beat Tierkreis...but there's no dice game...*grumble*

Loving this game! My trips to Tops and the Ultra Luxe ended with a shootout...Still not sure who to side with. Now just back to wasteland questing!!! Oh and the game runs much smoother after a uninstall/reinstall + patch download on the PS3.
13  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Phantasy Star Marathon! on: September 27, 2010, 01:15:25 PM
The cool part about 4 was that grinding to me was actually fun! The random battles were so smooth and crisp, the macro system made it that much more simple. Anyone remember grinding those giant sand worms? Good times...

Really makes you hate long load times between random battles in today's RPGs.
14  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ridiculous plot wanking... on: August 31, 2010, 03:50:41 PM
I agree with us all being old fogeys(mentally)...

I could not stomach more then 3 hours of FFXIII before quitting and selling it, I later picked up Phantasy Star IV (my first RPG) and beat it in 3 days...satisfied as ever as cliche as it was...but that was only thanks to nostalgia.

Maybe us older folks just can't immerse ourselves in "coming of age" stories anymore, no matter how pretty and shiny they've become.
15  Media / Multiplayer RPGs / "Confessions of a Hypocritical MMO Player, In Three Acts" Discussion on: June 14, 2010, 11:36:33 AM
Hopefully this was the right place to post this!

I enjoyed that editorial. I'm willing to bet many long time players go through similar conflicts in MMO gaming. I was a staunch MMO hater, being raised a console RPG'er. I was pushed to try FFXI and learned the basics of mmo-etiquette and went far. I then moved on to WoW with some friends and was totally sucked in. I had this same character for 5 years and was my only level 80 (level capped) one.

My story ends differently though, earlier this year I decided to end it for good. Being a fresh college grad in this weak economy I found it an easy/cheap escape, but bad in the long term because of my addictive personality. It was tough, I totally had the same attachment to the "toon" Patrick had. My way of keeping him "alive" though was to order one of those figureprints.com statues and leave him on my desktop as a tribute to the time spent and rewards earned on that game. Seeing him decked out in gear I "grinded" to get keeps me from re-installing in the long run...hopefully.

Any other MMO player stories?
