Oh man how did I forget about Chrono Cross. That game was amazing, and had a pretty unique approach to turn-based battles (the execution anyway). LOVE that game.

2193  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Is the 360 the RPG console of this generation? on: June 14, 2008, 11:38:24 AM

Isn't there like... one turn-based RPG on PS3, which is a port of a crappy 360 RPG?

Yep (sorry Pat)
2194  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Operation Darkness on: June 14, 2008, 11:36:58 AM
Decided to revive this because reviews are starting to surface. This looks like it could be the lowest rated RPG so far this gen.

I can't say I'm surprised, I don't really like Success much (the developers).

Other than FF8, worst RPG ever made.

FF8 bored me senseless.

You're both crazy :P

My favorite turn-based RPG battle system is also the Press-Turn system from later Megami Tensei titles.  It's genius.

My favorite action-based RPG battle system is the Linear Motion battle system from the Tales games.  The AI is quite competent and unlike Star Ocean games, I never have to babysit them.  I'm normally not a fan of realtime battling (I'm a turn based guy at heart), but Tales' battle engine I love.  Too bad the series itself is so lackluster.  I'd like to see a more dynamically scripted sci-fi style RPG with the Tales battle system.

My least favorite RPG battle system is ATB.  It is rather clunky.  The bar filling up is "hurry up and wait" and it's not fun being pounded on while I'm navigating through menus.  FFX had an incredible battle system but after that it's "sorry, but we're going back to ATB for X-2, modified ATB for XII, and ATB again for XIII."  I'd like to see FF adopt FFX's battle system as the standard instead of the clunky ATB nonsense.

As a fighting game fan as much as an RPG fan, a good combat system that makes sense and is fun is important to me.  You spend a healthy portion of RPGs engaged in battle, so any battle system where I want to pick fights solely for the sake of picking fights is a good one.  Tales and Megami Tensei do that for me.

FFXII's was called ADB I think (active dimension or something like that). And I always had to babysit the AI characters in the Tales games. I prefer SO3 because you could switch characters on the fly. It was genius in that kind of battle system. I also like the freedom SO3 gives with movement over the limited movement in Tales games.

Well GameSpot and IGN both gave it a 10.

With Star Ocean 4 being a prequel, I'm jumping ahead and wondering about future installments in the series.  I mean, the SO games are loosely connected to each other and I feel as if the writers wrote themselves into a corner with SO3's plot twist so a sequel to that would require some imaginative writing.

What's next after SO4?  Star Earth, the pre-prequel?  Post-apocalypse often turns into the "podunk" dark ages, so perhaps the pre-apocalypse will have the futuristic stuff like flying cars.

IMO, few JRPGs could do the whole interplanetary thing better than Phantasy Star.  Star Ocean could do well to take a cue from that series, methinks.

PSU was a pile of doodoo and the series seems to only be getting worse as times progressing. I used to love that series too... freakin Sega. I wonder if they are going to make more games for that series?

Oh god, I forgot Mass Effect. Western RPGs consistently beat JRPGs in terms of script. Mass Effect in particular was great.

By the way, let's not turn this into a FFXII love fest. It will only cause dissension.

I agree on both points. I've seen plenty of FFXII arguing (and I've only been here since March) and I just don't want to get into it AGAIN. I also agree that Mass Effects script was amazing.

I loved SO3's battle system. The freedom and range of abilities was great and it was just tons of fun. I also loved Grandia 3's because it was my first game of the series and I thought it was one of the most innovative turn-based battle systems I have played and it was also tons of fun. I also really liked FFXII's, unlike most. Of course when it comes to SRPG's nothing beats FFT to this day (imo of course).

Well I beat Metal Gear Solid 4.  I won't really say anything about it, but it was an epic, awesome game from beginning to end.  The series as a whole is one of the best I've ever played.

Hurry up and beat it so I can discuss it. :P

I have work, school, and life so I don't have as much time to play it as I want. I still ended up playing it for 7 hours straight yesterday (9PM-4AM) and only got 3 hours of sleep for school. The game is freaking amazing so far.

It's not as bad as I was expecting, but 'Lost Gem' and the fact remakes implies more of these didn't somehow come out here seems ignorant. I'd have saved the Lost Gem comment for V at least.

I'd say that lost gem only applied to FF3 since we didn't have it until the remake.

i know i'll be laughed at, but i genuinely like the FFXII script - well spoken/ written and far from a direct translation from the japanese one
having played both, the articulate word play in the english FFXII puts it heads and heals over the japanese script, which was very good already

loved the script to english version of Balthier

...in saying that, Vagrant Story was great too

You are not going to get laughed at (at least not by me). I thought the script and voice acting in FFXII were bar none the greatest on the PS2 (when it comes to RPG's).
