2191  Media / Single-Player RPGs / i'm usually not one to complain about rpg stories but.... on: May 29, 2008, 06:04:03 PM
Grandia 3 may not have that great of a plot, but the battle engine is one of the best I have ever played, hence why I enjoyed it so much. I have played much worse RPG's.

It got pretty good ratings too: http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/927215.asp?q=grandia%203

I liked Grandia 3's battle system and characters, and that was enough for me to finish the game. Now SO3, I LOVED that game. No way it was a disappointment in my eyes.

If Grandia 3 is one of the worst stories you have ever seen, then you haven't played very many RPG's. I didn't think the story was great, but I enjoyed it because the characters weren't stupid. It had personality.

I would side with the "get both" people on this one. Regardless of which console you get you're still going to be missing out on great exlcusive games, RPG or not.  Personally, i'm looking forward to Fallout 3 at the moment. I'm pretty sure it's going to both consoles though.

I have a 360 and i'm quite happy with the library but I'm going to have to get a PS3 eventually once FFXIII and God of War 3 hit the shelves. I was never a Metal Gear nut but that's a big selling point for some.  I heard a nasty rumor of 90 minute cutscene in MGS4 the other day.  I suppose some people would be down for that but not me. I always found those games kinda preachy..

We already discussed that 90 min cutscene in the MGS4 forum, and it is absolutely false.

It's also worth keeping in mind that the 360 has sold substantially more consoles in the US which means that a higher percentage of the JRPGs for the system are likely to get released in the US.  We can already see this in the fact that Atlus has 3 Strategy/RPGs scheduled to be released in the US for the 360 this year and zero titles for the PS3 at the moment.

Personally, I think in the end, the Wii will have the most RPGs for it simply because it's demolishing the competition in sales.  If I remember correctly, last month, in the US, it sold twice as many consoles as the XBox 360 and the PS3 COMBINED.  And this is the month when the 360 & PS3 were supposed to shine due to GTA4's release.

Personally, I don't really see the PS3 dominating the RPG field because the system isn't doing that well.  The PS3 is doing well in Europe (where it looks to be beating the 360 by a modest amount), so-so in the US, and poorly in Japan.  A lot of people forget how badly the PS3 is doing in Japan (Japanese PS3 sales are fewer than US PS3 sales and both combined are noticeably less than US 360 sales) simply because the 360 is doing even worse there.

You're kidding right? The Wii is NOT going to have the most RPG's, ever. There's barely any on it now, and only a handful that look interesting for the future.

I haven't been impressed with much of Tri-Ace's output, and this doesn't look spectacular. It appears to be very generic, but if they get the battle system right this time, I'd be happy to play it. If not, I'll be enjoying Tales.

You don't think Tales is generic? I think it's one of the most generic RPG series ever. I still enjoy them, but they aren't exactly innovative and cutting edge in any way.

Yeah, so where's KH3 going then?  PS2?

As of now there is no KH3. KH: Birth By Sleep is for PSP, KH: 358/2 Days is for DS, and KH: Coded is for mobile phones. That is all they are working on when it comes to KH. They might announce a KH3 in the future, but for now it doesn't seem so.

Sorry about posting in the wrong section.

Simply between PS3 and the X360? It's a toss up, but a lot of stuff is multiplatform. Say what kind of stories you want, and maybe an ideal suggestion can be made.

Well, some of the RPGs I liked were FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Kingdom Hearts, and FFXII. I'm not a big fan of the traditional turn based combat.

I really like scifi.

This alone should basically decide for you.  Final Fantasy XIII and Kingdom Hearts III are both going to be on PS3, so if you want to simply go off your old tastes PS3 would be for you.  Mass Effect (which is also on PC) and Too Human are the only two Sci-Fi series I see coming anytime soon for 360.

Kingdom Hearts 3? What are you talking about. Square Enix has never said anything about a KH3. They are making 3 spin-offs at the moment for the DS, PSP, and mobile phone.

If you like sci-fi, Mass Effect is an outstanding game that I am sure you would probably like. There are rumors about a PS3 port, but nothing has been said by Bioware about it. Star Ocean 4 is also still up in the air when it comes to the platform even though many think it will be for the PS3.

The voice acting is so absolutely terrible, that there is no way I'm touching this game.

Maybe if the gameplay is fun, but oh dear god... I expect more from Square Enix. Or wait, do I? They haven't impressed me in a long, long time.

I'm sick of saying this over and over again to uninformed people, but this game is developed by TRI-ACE, not Square Enix. They are the publishers.

I've beaten RE4 multiple times on different systems, and Ashley was never playable at the SAME TIME Leon was. Thats where I see the problem with RE5.

Wait, what?  You're still making absolutely no sense to me.  Since the AI controls that person in single player how does that even affect the single player game at all?  As that article suggests, it's basically just to be able to tout the co-op, which once again I have no idea how that is going to take -away- from RE5.

I was saying that if they are making it with co-op in mind, then they might do what Army of Two did and make it to where if you play it by yourself it is MUCH worse than playing it with someone else. That and I simply could not get scared if someone was next to me or talking to me over Xbox live while the game was going on, and thats not what I want.

I'm such a Namco fighting junkie.  When I'm at my folks' house, I'm often playing Soul Calibur on my Dreamcast (still the best console ever for fighting games.)  When I'm not, I'm playing Tekken 4 or 5 on my PS2, or Tekken Dark Resurrection on my PSP.

I was debating over which next gen system to get.  I was almost sold on an Xbox 360 until I looked at the fighting games, which is one of my favorite genres and the reason my Dreamcast has stuck around.  Soul Calibur 4's on both, but Tekken 6 is Sony exclusive and since I adore the Tekken series far more than any Dead or Alive game, Tekken 6 has sold me on a PS3.  And since the PS3's Soul Calibur 4 has Vader instead of Yoda and I never really liked Yoda, I still win out.

Namco said that Yoda and Darth Vader are going to be downloadable characters for both versions eventually (so the exclusive character fight is pointless). They really screwed up by saying that before the game released.
