And of course stuck on the very next boss.

I do not have the patience for the latter half of Trails of Cold Steel.
Yeah, I generally don't like drawn-out endgames, myself.

The Megami Tensei games were first to have monster-capturing, and I still think most of the games in the series do it better than the Pokémon titles do.

I had a choice between Apocalypse or Dragon Quest VII, but since it the latter seemed out of stock on Amazon (they said estimated delivery 1 to 2 months), I ordered the former instead, and hope it improves upon the original SMTIV.

Yeah, I'm still working on Tom Clancy's The Division, and I have to really say that whoever doesn't design cutscenes to be skippable or includes better checkpoints, particularly after one of many enemy waves, needs to have their fucking programming degree revoked. I'm a few levels above the supposed mission "level," and recently bought a piece of armor that almost doubled the previous defense stat, but enemies *still* massacre me in a few hits and even a minor slipup can fuck me up. If shit like that doesn't make a dent in the game's difficulty, that's my cue to microwave the game disc.

EarthBound and Mother 3 to me are the gold standards of visible battles in terms of skippability if your party's strong enough.

In those instances, I'd prefer that things such as puzzles and minigames, especially if more difficult than the main game itself, should be skippable after a few tries. The puzzles where Cress and Arche have to hit switches simultaneously comes to mind in that if you fail enough times, your other characters just do it for you.

I just don't like things such as games giving crappy direction on how to advance or there being a "right" way to play a game.

Kingdom Hearts II was similar in that regards, as well.

Kind of a baffling design decision in the original version considering that its predecessors had a carriage system where even reserve members got experience even if not in the party.

Here's the thing.  I feel like Unlimited SaGa could have been good with a better manual or tutorials or any sort of explanatory exposition.  It's like trying to play a complicated board game without knowing the rules and there is no expert player there to kinda help walk you through the rules.  Unlimited SaGa is not a "pick-up-and-play" type of game.
Yeah, having to use a guide to play a game = not an indicator of good design.

I liked the original game on the PlayStation, but it definitely didn't look like a game in development for half a decade.

I won't get it right away, but I eventually will.

blah blah blah
Well, whatever the case, the story was still shitty in execution and unmemorable.

Ooooh I don't like the new standard battle music :(
Yeah, since most time in RPGs is spent fighting you damn well better have a good battle theme, or multiple themes. I can think of games that have good soundtracks but poor battle themes, Dark Cloud and Chrono Cross come to mind.

I pretty much liked both P3 and 4 from the start, myself, but agree that the atmosphere of the latter had to somewhat grow on me.

I honestly don't think the first Cold Steel's story was that great, I got flashbacks of Final Fantasy VIII and Persona 3 & 4, and don't remember much of the characters or the plot itself. It really dropped the ball when they referenced the "War of the Lions" and had a character named "Miner Dick." If a character's name sounds penile, it's probably a good idea to change it to something less suggestive. And would it kill to have realistic battle dialogue? The battle system was for me the saving grace, though it would have been nice if one could just turn off animations instead of making the player constantly mash the Start button.
