Well, turn order might be random, but you do have some degree of control over your characters, yes.

I tried the original Fallout but absolutely couldn't stand its open-endedness and lack of direction on what exactly the hell to do. Your call, though.

I never think a game being too easy is a flaw, I'll take an easy RPG any day over one that's extremely hard. I preferred Nall's voice in the PSP version over his squeaky voice in the PSX version.

By the way I really wouldn't recommend the Baldur's Gate games since I tried the first one but it became one of few RPGs I ended up not finishing (too expensive to revive dead characters, schizophrenic difficulty). Saved computer RPGs my ass.

I hold EarthBound to be the gold standard of non-random battles, where enemies charge you if your levels are low and run away if your levels are high, and you can score instant victories against them if you're powerful enough without having to fight them.

So yes, I believe random encounters can be pretty much phased out.

The first game is one of my favorite Western RPGs (and I'll admit I really don't like WRPGs that much), and it's just fine on its own, if somewhat short (about twenty hours).

I personally wouldn't recommend some of the older WRPGs such as Elder Scrolls Arena, Baldur's Gate, and Fallout. I heard good things about them, but they just ended up really letting me down. I don't like having too much freedom to the point where I have to use a guide, let alone use a guide to make sense of a game. I'll take older JRPGs any day.

I disagree, Link to the Past is my favorite Zelda, I think it's aged pretty well, I much prefer it over the 3-D Zelda games.

As for recommendations...

1. Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume - I think it translates the Valkyrie Profile gameplay very well to a strategy RPG, and it's not too lengthy and you don't need to grind (you actually can't really grind aside from a select few optional battles, but the game's balanced enough where it's not necessary).

2. The Tales of... / Star Ocean games, which are two of my personal favorite series.

3. I definitely second the recommendation for the Suikoden games, though you probably can't find the second at a reasonable price.

4. If you have a Steam account you might be able to download/play the original Mass Effect, if your system requirements are good enough (mine were, though the second game's system requirements are much higher).

I think a little less than 20 hours, depending upon how much grinding you need to do end-game.

DeJap's translation was definitely with its moments, though I found the gameplay of the PlayStation version of Phantasia to be somewhat superior (and I think there's a translation for it as well). Definitely your call, though.

Phantasia GBA definitely isn't the best version of the game, with that honor going to either the PSX or PSP version.

I had a blast with the PS2 version and might get a 3DS for this game.

Exactly what problem do JRPG companies have with letting other companies translate their games? Do they not like making money, or something? I heard other companies have tried to license Tales games, for instance, but Namco-Bandai adamantly refuses.
313  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: An appreciation of RPG stories, east and west on: April 20, 2011, 09:13:42 PM
I think any RPG should answer the question about its characters "Who are these people and why should I care?" which is my opinion an essential step towards a good plot. A databank a la Star Ocean 3 definitely helps, as well.

Any RPG also needs a clear formula of "You are (blank) and your goal is (blank)", and complexity doesn't always make for a good plot.
314  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Mass Effect 3 on: April 20, 2011, 09:09:27 PM
I recently finished the original Mass Effect, and I can safely say it's one of the best Western RPGs I've ever played, and I'm definitely looking forward to playing its sequel, and eventually the third game as long as the developers didn't fuck things up.

I like fun, but I didn't like this game largely because it was too dependent upon luck at times, and I didn't like having to start from level 1 five or so times. I liked Puzzle Quest, though.
