Exactly what problem do JRPG companies have with letting other companies translate their games? Do they not like making money, or something? I heard other companies have tried to license Tales games, for instance, but Namco-Bandai adamantly refuses.

I think any RPG should answer the question about its characters "Who are these people and why should I care?" which is my opinion an essential step towards a good plot. A databank a la Star Ocean 3 definitely helps, as well.

Any RPG also needs a clear formula of "You are (blank) and your goal is (blank)", and complexity doesn't always make for a good plot.
318  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Mass Effect 3 on: April 20, 2011, 09:09:27 PM
I recently finished the original Mass Effect, and I can safely say it's one of the best Western RPGs I've ever played, and I'm definitely looking forward to playing its sequel, and eventually the third game as long as the developers didn't fuck things up.

I like fun, but I didn't like this game largely because it was too dependent upon luck at times, and I didn't like having to start from level 1 five or so times. I liked Puzzle Quest, though.
320  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Legend of Legaia on: March 30, 2011, 08:09:19 PM
I couldn't stomach either Legaia game largely because battles are way too fracking slow.

Don't we have this thread on the General Discussion Board? You know, the one stickied to the very top of said board?

Sorry, didn't see it.

I'm a bit wary of this since I didn't really enjoy Eternal Punishment (had to use a guide to negotiate with enemies for cards and to unveil combo spells).
323  Media / Single-Player RPGs / What are you playing now? on: February 17, 2011, 09:19:56 PM
Just interested in seeing what RPGs you all are currently playing. I'm currently working on...

Dissidia Final Fantasy - Working on post-game content, found some battles nigh impossible even with one character at level 100 (Cloud).

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies - Also working on post-game content, mostly exploring Grottos for synthesis materials.

Final Fantasy XIII - Also working on post-game content, and I've finally been able to farm those giant tortoises without Summon or Death.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - I'm on Kashyyyk right now, after Dantooine.
324  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: RPGs with puzzles or subgames on: February 13, 2011, 11:15:03 PM
As long as you don't need a guide and/or the puzzles/minigames aren't completely mandatory, I'm fine with them in RPGs.
325  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Favorite and Least Favourite Tactical RPGs on: February 08, 2011, 11:04:27 PM
Yeah, I remember you saying that any RPG is beatable without grinding...ever play any of the Dragon Quest games?

I forgot to mention Devil Survivor being Escort Mission Hell as well, and Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon being one of few games I couldn't complete, what with the inability to grind outside Arena Abusing, which I didn't do.
326  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Most anticipated RPGs on Nintendo 3DS on: February 08, 2011, 09:27:56 PM
Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance and maybe the new Pokemon game hinted at, but that's about it for me.
327  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Favorite and Least Favourite Tactical RPGs on: February 08, 2011, 09:26:29 PM
My Favorites:

Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume - I liked it in spite of the crap it's gotten (though said crap's mostly come from RPGamer's reviewers, with whom I almost never agree), and would consider it the Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter of tactical RPGs.

Valkyria Chronicles - I'll admit I had to use a guide to beat some battles, but still had solid presentation.

Suikoden Tactics - Thought it translated Suikoden IV's gameplay decently to a tactical RPG, though then again I'm among the few who actually liked Suikoden IV.

Disgaea series - At first I really didn't like these games, but I grew to like them given the quicker-than-usual pace of battles and general addictiveness of the Item World.

Growlanser series - The first is one of my favorites, and the quick pace of battles is a definite draw for me.

La Pucelle Tactics - I actually like this a bit more than the Disgaea games since you can retreat from battles anytime and retain experience.

Shining Force series - I especially like that you never waste time even when losing a battle since you can retreat anytime and retain experience and money.

Average on My List:

Final Fantasy Tactics - I felt that most classes were useless (and hated having to learn item use from an entire class), and that only the story characters, especially Cidolfas, were any good, especially given Cid's ability to pretty much take on all enemies himself in the last chapter. Didn't like the points of no return, either, something I don't like in tactical RPGs.

Stella Deus - Loved the soundtrack and especially graphics, but the gameplay was meh in my book.

Phantom Brave - Unplayable unless you exploit the random dungeon / failure title experience-gaining trick.

Least Favorites:

Devil Survivor - Didn't like the sluggish endgame grinding and general schizophrenic difficulty.
328  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Tales of Graces confirmed for NA on: February 08, 2011, 09:18:04 PM
I especially liked the Karma Society Tower theme. I feel though that even if Graces sells well in NA we still won't get all those other missing Tales games. Might as well give up and learn Japanese if you're a fan of the series.

Yes, get them.
330  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Best RPG of the decade on: September 03, 2010, 02:27:50 PM
A solid list, but I'm fucking sick and tired of people using their opinions on the Knights of the Old Republic games to bash the Star Wars prequels. They were actually better reviewed than the original movies were when they were first release, and the original trilogy isn't that fucking perfect, either, and I could list a ton of plot holes in the original trilogy.
