316  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: In an age of re-makes, I wish... (outside the realm of Square) on: July 18, 2011, 10:05:47 PM
So in a time when it seems most titles with a following have been re-made or re-released I can't help but recall a few gems from my youth that I would LOVE to see reincarnated on a new platform..... Specifically, working designs titles and a few others from the 16 bit days.....

I mean, does anyone remember Vay? That game was absolutely amazing to me in my youth! Shining Wisdom???? Dragon Force!!?????? Paladins Quest even....?

What titles, outside of the obviously popular yet neglected square franchises, would you guys like to see? I know this post is pointless and more or less just musing over what may never be but man.... Vay deserves a re-release by someone.....

I'd definitely love to see the Lennus series (the first released in NA as Paladin's Quest) revived, and the first and second games remade. The Lennus: Memory of the Ancient Machine album is fucking awesome.

Favorite Design Choices:

Warp magic/dungeon exiting magic, helps cut down superfluous playing time.
Automaps, largely keep you from getting lost in dungeons.

Least Favorite Design Choices:

Save points. Just fucking let us save our game anywhere. I think the argument that letting you save anywhere makes a game easier is a load of bullshit, just look at the SaGa games.
Any kind of randomization, be it random drops, random battles, etc.

I find quests that actually add to a game's story most interesting and fun.
319  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: "No plans" for new Saga or Mana games on: June 22, 2011, 05:18:14 PM
The SaGa and Mana series are piles of shit (except FF Adventure and Secret of Mana, fuck those who like Seiken 3), so I'm not hurt by this news.

Boo. I don't want to pay for an Xbox 360 just for this game, I'll just import the PS3 version once I've honed my Japanese skills a little more.

blah blah blah

You actually liked Baldur's Gate? You have my deepest condolences.

Are you sure that's the right Dark Souls?
323  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Megami Tensei Topic on: June 14, 2011, 12:56:07 AM
imo persona 1 and both persona 2's arent even fit to have scraps at persona 3 and 4's table. they are just missing a certain charm that persona 3 and 4 have.

Maybe for P1, but not for P2. P2 is the worst of the series.

Fixed. I honestly don't see how it's humanely possible to play P2 without a guide, given the shitty conversation system.
324  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Question about the PS2 SMT: DS Titles on: June 05, 2011, 01:28:11 PM
In any case, I heard DS1 is good, but DS2 sucks. Tough call. I'd let your decision be based primarily on whether or not you can find DS1 for a cheap price (under $20)

Fixed. I actually liked the first Devil Summoner better than the second, the second for me was fucked up by long-ass loading times and that demon you randomly encountered that could easily rape you.
325  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Dungeons And Dragons: Daggerdale. on: May 25, 2011, 06:45:47 PM
My experience with Dungeons & Dragons-based RPGs has generally been shitty (Baldur's Gate), so I'll gladly skip this one.

Well, turn order might be random, but you do have some degree of control over your characters, yes.
327  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: GoG.com must haves. on: May 07, 2011, 05:35:10 PM
I tried the original Fallout but absolutely couldn't stand its open-endedness and lack of direction on what exactly the hell to do. Your call, though.
328  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: I need some help to get initiated, lol. on: May 03, 2011, 08:53:55 PM
I never think a game being too easy is a flaw, I'll take an easy RPG any day over one that's extremely hard. I preferred Nall's voice in the PSP version over his squeaky voice in the PSX version.

By the way I really wouldn't recommend the Baldur's Gate games since I tried the first one but it became one of few RPGs I ended up not finishing (too expensive to revive dead characters, schizophrenic difficulty). Saved computer RPGs my ass.
329  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Should Random Battles Be Done Away With? on: May 01, 2011, 09:58:13 PM
I hold EarthBound to be the gold standard of non-random battles, where enemies charge you if your levels are low and run away if your levels are high, and you can score instant victories against them if you're powerful enough without having to fight them.

So yes, I believe random encounters can be pretty much phased out.

The first game is one of my favorite Western RPGs (and I'll admit I really don't like WRPGs that much), and it's just fine on its own, if somewhat short (about twenty hours).
