361  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Arc the Lad 2 Help x_x on: August 14, 2008, 06:52:15 PM
Magic's pretty much your only saving grace if you want to level up :/
362  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Beyond the Beyond on: July 28, 2008, 08:20:45 AM
Overall 44% is, if anything, *too* generous for the game, especially considering mainstream game critics tend to overrate even bad games. But yeah, Beyond the Beyond isn't all that good. *Very* high encounter rate, slow battles made slower by some stupid system where you can supposedly mash buttons a lot before attack execution for a critical attack or dodging attacks (although it's *highly* randomized), cliched plot, and hideous character design that makes Nomura look like Rembrandt. The music by Motoi Sakuraba isn't all that bad, though, and the graphics aside from the ugly art isn't that bad, though the battle graphics are on the pixelated side.

This seems to happen in just about every RPG, but a character getting temporarily incapacitated for much of the game (i.e. FF7, FF8, Wild ARMs, etc.).

I've seen plenty of beast weapon/armor available at the shop, and the beast's armor is actually a lot better than the armor for other classes, and their attack power's pretty good, too. They seem to be like Protectors, but with much better fighting capability...
365  Media / Single-Player RPGs / IGN on Star Ocean 4 - No ridiculous plot twist on: July 18, 2008, 12:19:12 PM
I didn't mind "the" plot twist because there *did* seem to be more than one, such as...
Fayt being a science experiment or whatever, sprouting magical wings, and such

But I thought the databank was a great idea. Frankly, I had a bigger problem with the gameplay than the plot.
366  Media / Single-Player RPGs / RPGs you're embarassed to own. on: July 18, 2008, 12:17:04 PM
Definitely both Kingdom Hearts. I definitely wouldn't want to get caught dead playing them my anyone in my family.

I'm at the fifth Stratum, whose first boss has been giving me a hard time. The third Stratum bosses gave me a bit of a hard time as well and somewhat forced me to try the Quests, although I managed to beat them after enough tries. My main party's a Landstalker, a Protector, a Ronin, a Troubadour, and a Medic. I had had an Alchemist although I replaced it with the Troubadour since I needed its stat-buffing magic, and since I'm somewhat stuck against the first fifth Stratum boss, I've again been trying my hand at the Quests. It definitely is harder than the first game. I've gotten killed a few times by FOEs that pinned me against walls -_-

Persona 3 definitely does have a story, though heavily character- and event-driven. I much prefer conflict-driven stories (like in the Suikoden games) since they just tend to be the most powerful to me.
369  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Vay was just remade and released. on: July 15, 2008, 06:53:18 PM
Meh, I didn't care much for the game...but yeah, whoever did that art makes Nomura look like Rembrandt.
370  Media / Single-Player RPGs / FFTA2 Grimoire of the Rift on: July 15, 2008, 09:50:46 AM
I'm not a fan of the series I'll admit. I thought FFT was unfair and unbalanced and that FFTA was slow and boring.
371  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Pontificating Sega's future RPG offerings on: July 14, 2008, 10:56:38 PM
Sega's barely a shell of its former self RPG-wise. I would really like to see some of the older Phantasy Stars/Shining Forces remade/ported to the DS, but that's unlikely...
372  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Holy Crap. Final Fantasy XIII for Xbox 360 on: July 14, 2008, 04:50:37 PM
Thank *God*.

I don't mind silent protagonists at all as long as they have some semblance of development and backstory like in DQ8 and Suikoden II (and backstory in my opinion is the *biggest* part of character development).

I actually prefer more structured, linear games since nonlinear RPGs tend to do a crappy job telling players how to advance the game.

Some games definitely do non-random encounters poorly (like the SaGa, Grandia, and Lunar games). RPGs Earthbound and Persona 3 on the other hand do them decently...
