361  Media / Single-Player RPGs / RPGs you're embarassed to own. on: July 18, 2008, 12:17:04 PM
Definitely both Kingdom Hearts. I definitely wouldn't want to get caught dead playing them my anyone in my family.

I'm at the fifth Stratum, whose first boss has been giving me a hard time. The third Stratum bosses gave me a bit of a hard time as well and somewhat forced me to try the Quests, although I managed to beat them after enough tries. My main party's a Landstalker, a Protector, a Ronin, a Troubadour, and a Medic. I had had an Alchemist although I replaced it with the Troubadour since I needed its stat-buffing magic, and since I'm somewhat stuck against the first fifth Stratum boss, I've again been trying my hand at the Quests. It definitely is harder than the first game. I've gotten killed a few times by FOEs that pinned me against walls -_-

Persona 3 definitely does have a story, though heavily character- and event-driven. I much prefer conflict-driven stories (like in the Suikoden games) since they just tend to be the most powerful to me.
364  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Vay was just remade and released. on: July 15, 2008, 06:53:18 PM
Meh, I didn't care much for the game...but yeah, whoever did that art makes Nomura look like Rembrandt.
365  Media / Single-Player RPGs / FFTA2 Grimoire of the Rift on: July 15, 2008, 09:50:46 AM
I'm not a fan of the series I'll admit. I thought FFT was unfair and unbalanced and that FFTA was slow and boring.
366  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Pontificating Sega's future RPG offerings on: July 14, 2008, 10:56:38 PM
Sega's barely a shell of its former self RPG-wise. I would really like to see some of the older Phantasy Stars/Shining Forces remade/ported to the DS, but that's unlikely...

Thank *God*.

I don't mind silent protagonists at all as long as they have some semblance of development and backstory like in DQ8 and Suikoden II (and backstory in my opinion is the *biggest* part of character development).

I actually prefer more structured, linear games since nonlinear RPGs tend to do a crappy job telling players how to advance the game.

Some games definitely do non-random encounters poorly (like the SaGa, Grandia, and Lunar games). RPGs Earthbound and Persona 3 on the other hand do them decently...

Any kind of randomization, including random battles, is annoying to me. Random drops, where say you have a 1/50 chance of getting a rare item, and regardless of how many battles you fight, your chances really don't get any better, it still stays at 1/50 regardless of how many battles you fight; have a counter instead in addition to the probability factor, and if we haven't gotten the item after fifty battles, then DROP IT. It's also strange that despite "random" battles, the sets of enemies you fight aren't random in many instances, and are instead *exactly* the same in some instances. Also, the monster/Persona fusing interface in Shin Megami Tensei games, where the skill sets of fused monsters are randomized, and you have to constantly deselect them and reselect them to change their skill sets; why not just save us some time and annoyance by letting us choose skills for monsters/Personas to inherit?

The original Growlanser. Pretty decent, and has probably Noriyuki Iwadare's best soundtrack ever.

VP, yes. I've read FAQs and I have no idea how you're supposed to figure out what to do to get the good ending. CC just involves filling in six colored circles in the last battle. That's not really going to ridiculous lengths.

That brings me to having to use guides to play games, discover everything, and so forth. I mean, if you have to use a guide just to get through the main storyline, figure out how to advance, and so forth, it's probably not very well designed. I mean, there are dozens of things present in RPGs that I could've gone a whole lifetime without realizing even existed in the game, let alone how to complete, without guides of sorts (like some of the Social Links in Persona 3, and how to complete some of Elizabeth's requests).

Boo-urns, I actually like some of those songs :/ As operas aren't over till the fat lady sings, RPGs aren't over till the J-Pop lady sings :P
