I don't care if localization teams change things, since some Japanese dialogue conventions don't translate very well to English, like characters shouting the names of their attacks, and honorifics (which really sound unnatural if spoken by actors who obviously have no idea in hell what they mean). I liked Fire Emblem: Awakening, but there seems no reason, for instance, why anyone would think it natural for a character to say, "Defeat..." before they die.
62  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Mass Effect 3 anyone? on: January 15, 2016, 02:55:35 PM
I'm playing through the Mass Effect trilogy now for the PlayStation 3, and am close to the end of a first game. My old fat PS3 stopped working for me and wouldn't even load the second game, leading me to get a new slim model, and it's been working fine. Been a while since I've played the third game, but I really don't get complaints about the ending.

Finished the Namek and Captain Ginyu Saga story arc of Dragon Ball Z. Akira Toriyama definitely creates some truly epic battles that span many episodes, but I think I'll take a break from the series, given how long it is, and watch some Sherlock Hound.

I liked the original Arc the Lad, but I had a bit of trouble with its sequel since all my normal attacks seemed to miss, even when attacking foes from the side or behind, although the third game seemed to resolve that. Didn't care much for Twilight, particularly its drawn-out endgame (which seems to me one of my common complaints about many JRPGs). Just my two cents...

FFX-2 was definitely one of the funniest RPGs I've ever played, another contender for that title being Arc the Lad III.

I'll definitely spring for the special edition assuming all three games provide a cohesive narrative.

FF9 definitely needed an option to speed up battles, and I'm glad they're including one in the forthcoming ports.

Saw The Force Awakens today, and I was surprised...but not in a wholly positive way. It wasn't a bad movie, but my mom said it best when she said it was like re-watching the original trilogy, and somewhat felt like a "best of the OT" compilation.

Finished reading Terry Brooks' Word & Void trilogy, and thought it was fairly enjoyable. Also reading the Mortal Instruments books by Cassandra Clare in prep for the forthcoming Shadowhunters series, although the books haven't really gripped me, and I can barely write more than one paragraph in my Amazon reviews on them.
71  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Romancing SaGa 2 iOS/Android/Vita Port on: December 26, 2015, 09:15:26 PM
SaGa Frontier would have been a lot better if skills/stats for characters were retained when playing as different protagonists, and without the points of no return that necessitate keeping multiple save slots, whereas playing the game consequentially requires more than one memory card, especially if you're going for the true ending gained after finishing all quests.

Read A People's History of Christianity by Diana Butler Bass on Christmas Eve or Day. She does a bit of occasional jumping into the postmodern era (after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki) in sections supposedly confined to specific eras of Christian history, and while it hasn't really shaken me up religiously, I found it to be a decent resource. A quote from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade basically sums up my opinion on Christianity: "You must ask yourself: why do you seek the Cup of Christ? Is it for His glory, or for yours?"

I began watching Dragon Ball Z, having liked the original Dragon Ball, and...wow, instant gratification.
74  Media / Single-Player RPGs / Re: Ni No Kuni 2 Revenant Kingdom announced! on: December 23, 2015, 06:02:33 PM
I'm also super surprised they never really changed/localized the title of the game.

Yeah, and any of the alternate English franchise names I suggested certainly wouldn't be a mouthful like say, True Goddess Reincarnation/Rebirth/Transmigration/Metempsychosis (translation of Shin Megami Tensei).

Now my order status has been downgraded to "preparing for shipment," and the Lionheart Edition says "temporarily out of stock" despite my having preordered.

Edit: Never mind, my copy shipped.
