New Xmas music recommendations
« on: December 01, 2011, 01:09:50 AM »
I debated putting this thread in the music or help section... but I kinda need people to see it.

We're having a christmas part this weekend with friends and I need some music recomendations. Yeah I know all the "classics" that are played on Lite.FM but I'm looking for cheesy, funny, and weird stuff.

Case in point: I just found out that Scott Weiland released a collection of xmas tunes. Now he's the last person I ever thought of doing that.

I hate All I Want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carrey. Play that to make my ears bleed. That's a fun party game.

If you want terrible, get Bob Dylan's Christmas album.  It is sad and awful.

If you're looking for "wacky, but not too obscure" you could go with the few songs Weird Al has released.  I can think of Christmas at Ground Zero and The Night Santa Went Crazy.

Squirrel Nut Zippers and Barenaked Ladies both have holiday albums with some unusual stuff.

Twisted Christmas by the Bob Rivers Comedy Corp is old, but still worth some chuckles.

A Very Special Christmas (volume 1, apparently) features such holiday classics as "Christmas in Hollis."

Dunno - hopefully I went in the right direction with at least one of those.

I hate Britney Spears' Christmas songs. And I think I saw that Justin Bieber has a Christmas album. I haven't heard it because I avoid him like the plague, but that shit can't not be awful.

For good Christmas music, I heard Florence and the Machine put something out. I'm in love with her voice, I think I might actually willingly listen to Christmas music for once.

In all fairness, I really just wanted you to have to play some Brian Setzer and old Country Christmas music.

Well if I'd known that, I would have just told you to play the freaking Brian Setzer christmas album! I have it, and it's good.  Or I might have pointed you to the John Denver/Muppets Christmas album: http://www.amazon.com/John-Denver-Muppets-Christmas-Together/dp/B000001VD4

This one's also good - it's jazz. http://www.amazon.com/Yule-Struttin-Various-Artists/dp/B000005HG7

iTunes tells me that I have about 500 Christmas songs - we used to get one new CD every year to listen to while we put up the tree.  We kind of maxed out a year or two ago, but I got two new albums this year to make up for it. :)

Jackie Evancho, because my wife wanted it, and that girl can sing. http://www.jackieevancho.com/us/music/heavenly-christmas

And this group named Eclipse, because I used to sing with one of them. Here's their video page, which has some music videos from their Christmas album. They are embarrassingly "boy band," given that we're all in our mid to late 30s, but I think they're good anyway. :)  http://eclipsesingers.com/wp/videos/

Check these out.

http://www.amazon.com/A-Very-Special-Christmas-%28Series%29/e/B000APXMAA/ref=ntt_mus_dp_pel

My wife has two of the CD's from the series, songs by Smashing Pumpkins, Darius Rucker, Tom Petty, Sting, No Doubt, etc.

While not funny or weird, Transsiberian Orchestra is just plain good rocking XMas music.

I don't like most Christmas music. Could be because my nutty wife plays it nonstop from Turkey Day on. Either that or most of it is just plain BAD.
I only listen to a few bands/artists nowadays. Mostly instrumental.
TSO because they are awesome.
Their original songs like First Snow and Appalachian Snowfall are my favorites.
I love the George Winston December album. Beautiful
Mehdi - Christmas Treasures. Old favs done up in with a bit of rhythm and style.
I also like a few of Sarah McLachlans Winter songs:

Youtube needs to have a "not live" button or something. Most songs I prefer the album version, and it can be hard to find album versions of TSO songs. I don't want your crappy recorded version.
