It's out now. I'm not planning on a playing it just yet (it hasn't been very long since I finished Oath), but I'm buying it anyway in the hope that more Xseed/Falcom stuff gets released on PC.

I was thinking Origin was just a re-release of Ys 1 & 2 again.

I doubt Ys: Origin would have been anything but a disaster in retail. Steam was the best choice they could've made.

Ya at this point I'd say so. Not to mention the fact that XSEED can only work with what's out there, and Falcom never ported this to any consoles or handhelds in Japan. $20 on Steam is great, and frankly Lard, I think you should create a Steam account for this game if you're a fan of the series. If you hate using keyboard, just plug in a PS3 or 360 control via USB and config the buttons.

Part of the problem is that I'm going overseas to teach English later this year, and Steam is region locked to NA. It's pointless for me to use it.

I used Steam a ton when I was living in Switzerland. It locks where you can open an account, not where it can be accessed.

For what it's worth I imagine a PS Vita/3DS port of Ys Origin would do pretty well here at least, but it'd probably still bomb in Japan. I don't think a retail US release for PC was possible or likely to be successful though, we're not even getting fucking Dark Souls at retail, and that's coming to Europe and Japan!

You probably won't be missing anything with Dark Souls retail other than the convenience of installing from a disc. The vast majority of PC releases in Europe are just a box, a DVD and a piece of paper with a product key on it.
