Best PS3 exclusive JRPG?
« on: March 13, 2012, 04:58:16 PM »
I've had a 360 for years, but I finally got a PS3. I'm only going to use it for exclusives since I didn't buy it to play games I could already play on the 360. I'm not a fan of strategy RPG (Jeanne D'arc is pretty much the only SRPG I've really enjoyed) and I'm not a huge fan of action-RPG's or real-time FF12 style RPG's. I prefer traditional turn based RPG's the likes of FF10, Persona 4, Shadow Hearts, Mana Khemia etc.

Right now I'm leaning towards Atelier Totori since it seems the have some good reviews (90% on this site). Never played any game on the series before even though I've thought about getting the PS2 games.

Compared to the PS2 there seems to be a lack of JRPG's. Even after the PS3 came out the PS2 got more RPG's and until recently great JRPG's were still coming out on PS2. Are there less games being made or just less that come out outside of Japan? Even in Europe where I live the PS2 was supported better than any other console when it came to JRPG's and I was joping it would be the same for PS3.

Are we counting Dark/Demon's Souls? Probably not.

Turn-based, I guess the Atelier games are the least offensive, if not Ar Tonelico 3.

The best I've played is the Wizardry game on PSN, but it's really just decent at best, it's not all it could be. (Repetitive dungeons, lacking OST, but it still has its charms.)

Not only is Tales of Vesperia not exclusive, you listed it twice.

Ar Tonelico 3 and the two Hyperdimension Neptunia games.

That's it. That's what you got a PS3 for. Enjoy.
In my vision, I see that one of us is going to KO the other.

Here's my list:

Valkyria Chronicles
Valkyria Chronicles
Valkyria Chronicles
Valkyria Chronicles
Valkyria Chronicles
Valkyria Chronicles
Valkyria Chronicles
Valkyria Chronicles
Valkyria Chronicles
Valkyria Chronicles

OK, seriously, Totori is pretty good.  Tales of Graces f should be good too, but I haven't had the chance to play it yet.  Don't go near the trash that is Ar Tonelico 3 unless you're already invested in the series (which it doesn't sound like you are).  Anyway, there aren't really a lot of exclusives these days.  At least not on consoles.  Handhelds, on the other hand...

But play Valkyria Chronicles, really.  I know you said you didn't like SRPGs, but Valkyria Chronicles is a completely different beast from any SRPG you've played before.

I mostly pop in occasionally to give my two cents on certain controversial things, so if you disagree then send a PM, because I generally don't check for replies in threads in case I feel like replying and then things get heated/derailed.

Ni no Kuni is a pretty neat game, and though the battle system is a little outside of your comfort zone by the sound of things, the rest of the game is pretty much as traditional as JRPGs come. The whole game is essentially a Dragon Quest game with a Studio Ghibli coat of paint, after all. :D Unfortunately it's not due an English release until about a year after its Japanese counterpart. Go figure. :/ I suppose you could also argue that it's not an exclusive because of the DS version, but the two games are really quite different, and only the PS3 one seems destined for an English release.

Aside from that, I'd pretty much agree with what's been said. The Atelier games are indeed probably your best bet, with Totori and Meruru both being tons of fun, and Rorona being decent-ish. Just don't go in expecting something traditional in terms of structure, as they're much more open-ended than the English-released PS2 entries in the series. Pushing outside the realms of turn-based, Graces F, Folklore, Valkyria Chronicles and Demon's Souls are all worth your time, as others have already said.

Oh, and I'd go one further than Kevadu and highly recommend you stay far away from Ar Tonelico 3 even if you are invested in the series. I really quite liked the first two, but I found the third to be just... not very good at all. And also kind of creepy, offensive and squicky at times, even for a series that had you give the characters baths to improve their abilities in the second game.
