At first I thought they just took the map from Dragon Quest III and added a bunch of location names, but then I noticed that northern Asia wasn't covered in mountains and the starting continent is missing as well.

Naw.  It's a locked house.  You have to get the key by going through the Cave of Solitude.  But you need a boat to get there, and the Captain for it is lost in the Fargonian Woods a continent over that's under Imperial Civil War.  Time for a quest? :D
