Valkyrie Profile 2 without played 1?

i read somewhere that it's the prequel, VP1 was too expensive in the past for me thats why i never bought it and forgot, i recently got VP2 very cheap and wanted to ask as i didnt want to read spoilers if i can play it without having played 1?

Yep, absolutely. Barely matters at all, if I remember correctly.

Also, if you have a PSP, you can get VP1 cheap too.

It helps understand who some of the characters are but you can do without.

Heck, here's an analogy.

VP1 & VP2 are like Star Trek.
VP2 is the one they go back on Earth to get whales.
VP1 is Revenge of Khan.

The movie on Earth about getting whales didn't have crap to do with the other Star Trek movies, but if you watched them, you knew who was who better.

VP1 is better imo. More interesting setting and story and gameplay that just works a bit better. Though VP2 is still a great game.

VP2 is a little bit more straightforward than VP1.  VP1 has a LOT of hidden depth, but it can also be overwhelming.

I'm know I'm the minority but not only I think VP2 to be much better than VP1. It also is one of my favorite RPGs ever!

You know, I forgot about this game.  I've had it for awhile and couldn't really dig the odd battle system when I tried it long time ago.  I should give it another shot.

I don't know really, VP2 isnt a bad game, but everything that is great about 1 Well okay almost everything like the generic characters having amazing story scenes, the amazing ost.  VP2 somehow loses its effect.  maybe it was the 2-3 paragraph backstory for whatever random screwball character joined you that turned me off.

Actually, that's the main problem with VP2. Everything that made VP awesome wasn't in the sequel.
It doesn't make VP2 a bad game per se, but you also have to consider that most people were expecting something akin to the first entry.

valkyrie profile 2 is like the star trek reboot movie. even though VP 2 retcons the original, characters from the original are still important. for example one of the archers in VP2 made/built one of the hard mode dungeons in VP1. another killed a dragon that becomes a dragon zombie poisoning a swamp thats one of the early dungeons in VP1. though to get this you would have read all the einherier bio's in VP2 and be familliar with VP1.

It's not absolutely essential, but I'd reccomend playing VP1 first, since there are some significant plot points near the end of VP2 that won't make any sense if you don't.

the DS one takes place before the events of vp2. the events of covenant of the plume are why lenneth's memories were sealed. and possibly why silmeria started to rebel.
