i didnt play many rpgs since ps2 anymore, the time issue :(
but there are also very nice ones and a variety, but nothing touches the old super famicom times, ps1 times etc.

i also checked out some ps3 rpgs and somehow many lack the quality or visual style for me, too many are toooo much anime, cute like. i miss the sometimes more adult settings, more stuff like xenogears, varied stuff like brave fencer musashi, parasite eve etc. or i missed them? i dunno somehow the new rpgs dont attract me anymore so far, any opinions?

Vampire?

Eh, I doubt he would make a topic like this given how stubborn he is that things are as good as ever OR BETTER when it comes to JRPGs.

And play Valkyria Chronicles.  OK, it's definitely anime-style but it's not trying to be cute.

As it has been said many times before, handhelds!

Radiant Historia might be up your alley.

Well, Xenoblade is by your favorite game producers, and I would argue that it's far better and less flawed than Xenogears or Xenosaga. There's Nier, possibly the darkest, most depressing game ever made (makes Xenogears look like fluffy bunnies), Final Fantasy XIII-2 is amazing, and quite dark for a Final Fantasy. As someone said, Lost Odyssey. And that doesn't include western games or handhelds. This generation really hasn't been that bad at all.

Persona 2 is great, nice and dark and occulty, old school though.

Strange Journey's a bit newer, if you have a DS. Also very dark and mature in tone.
