It's hard to know exactly what was up but there's probably truth to both sides. It is clear she didn't any kind of support though.

It's cliche to say but Japanese business culture is probably fucked up.

I really sympathize with the poor woman. I was dismissed from my work because of an anxiety disorder (social phobia is such a great condition in the work place). The job was stressful and another girl left shortly before I did because of it, but thankfully my boss was really kind to me and tried to help me out in a lot of ways before I was dismissed.


This woman didn't get that clearly.

I'm more amused by the jackal in the comments haranguing the woman for being 'weak willed'. You can tell the bozo has no idea about Japanese culture at all. Being harassed by your boss in Japan is a far bigger deal considering stifling absolution of the 'elder hierarchy'. It's pretty much 'Don't talk back to your Grandpa. Why? Because he's old.' factor you experience in US culture as a child, cranked up a few dozen notches and then made worse by people who will actively take advantage of this to inflict hell on their juniors just because they can. The salt in the wounds is that there is no 'buffer generation' to stop this either. In keeping with the analogy if Grandpa gets psycho with you as a kid your parents can and likely will step in to say he's out of line, despite being younger. About the only person you can help you in the Japanese tier is someone on the equal power scale as the oppressor or higher up the chain.

But if that person is the 'boss', singular, you're basically hosed.
