meh, school days isn't even an average eroge the only thing it has going for it is the fact that its fully animated, and its more shocking yandere endings. The rest of it is complete garbage.
Considering you probably have more experience with the genre, what would you say are the top-tier eroges?

These are the best of the ones that have been localized. The US localized market is not very good and is mostly full of sex romps.

Does Katawa Shoujo count? It handles it very tastefully, which is why I tolerated it.

Katawa Shoujo is more of a VN than an eroge.
I'd add Sengoku Rance because playing the game is actually fun (and not just for you nether region) and Castle Fantasia (renewal) because it's a pretty good game overall.
EDIT: and Utawarerumono

I really would not recommend the Rance series to a newbie of eroge despite the great gameplay without at least letting them know that for all intents and purposes the hero is a serial rapist.

Isn't the main character of School Days ALSO a serial rapist?
He's made thousands of "kuso shujinko" (fucking main character) lists because even when you tell him to do the right thing he goes and does the complete fucking opposite anyway.

Anyway, it's a dread that nobody knows the name for, like those little square plastic gizmos that close your bread bags. I don't know the name for those either."

Mokoto isn't A rapist in School Days, at least not as far I have gotten. I have gotten half the endings so far and have seen no such behavior from Motoko. Motoko can make the right choices , the game just goes out of its way deny you the proper outcome of a sensible decision. His friend however....is a rapist.

For eroge recommendations, I +1 Crescendo wholeheartedly. Easily one of the best visual novels I've played, period. Eroge or otherwise. The writing is absolutely gorgeous. Sure, some girls' storylines are more compelling than others, but even the most straightforward one is well done. Fantastic game, highly recommended to anyone who likes visual novels. If I were allowed to review Crescendo for RPGFan, I'd give it an Editor's Choice stamp.

I haven't played (read?) it, but I've also heard good things about Cross Channel, and I've seen it compared favorably to Ever17.
