I've never played a Growlanser game, but with the way people are raving about this one I'm going to have to check it out.
Yes, you should! Seriously, anyone with a PSP who even sort of likes RPGs should get this game. :) It may not have the most cutting edge graphics, but in every other way it will be light years ahead of most RPGs.

It'd be nice, but the Langrisser team is long gone sadly.
IV is truly a great game, and it'll be worth the wait. I just hope people give it the attention it deserves.
I've already got it on preorder. Now if only Grows 1 & 6 could make it as well.
Also what ever happened to that Langrisser MMO?

Oh jeeze, lots of posts. Well I've played Devil Survivor 2 and Disgaea. I thought Disgaea was FAAAAR to complicated for me, but I do LOVE Devil Survivor 2. I might check this one out. I'm a sucker for a good relationship system.

The battle system of Growlanser is much less complicated than games like Disgaea and FF Tactics. And unlike most tactical / strategy RPGs, it does not use a rigid grid-based system; you choose the path you want the characters to follow and they advance in real-time.

I dunno about it being more or less complicated but I do know that growlanser requires actual strategy and disgaea doesn't
Klyde - do check out riviera. Its the only story/character focused game in the series. The other dept. Heaven games all have a strong combat focus. Has relationship building and ending for each party member like growlanser

klyde: plus riviera is five bucks on psn right now.
i've got my pre order in on this game i've been wanting to play a growlanser for some time now i used to look online at top ten rpg lists and growlanser titles always popped up but but i was disappointed that they were old sega saturn titles and the likely hood of being able to play was minute.
so how many growlansers are there and which ones are this a rerelease of? i think i missed that.

Wow, glad to see this is getting some attention. I'll most likely pre-order it some time this week, now that I can finally afford to spend some cash.

Six so far (plus an enhanced port of 1 and 4, the latter of which is what this thread was made for).

Disgaea can be summed up as numbers porn and FFT was an FF game on a grid instead of a line or faux MMO style. The problem with Riviera is that there really isn't much of a tactical element to the combat (you determine whether you put two thirds of your team in the front or the back which is a mostly irrelevant choice since you'll almost always want the more offensive choice due to the need to constantly score high ranks), and that exploration is honestly the more important mechanic.
Growlanser could be better summed up as a less squad based version of Ogre Battle. You set out your routes and determine which individual goes after which enemy you want dead or which objective you want captured. The primary difference is that you control units based upon the individual rather than a team and that you have more options to control them versus 'point them at something, set AI priority, watch and wait to see if you need to drop a nuke or not'. Also no need to worry about alignment, reputation/chaos frame shenanigans, just a few simple binary choices on who to whoo and which route to take.

I was really trying to keep my mouth shut on this one, but I have to ask after seeing so many people speak favorably over this game:
Is the writing/characterization and/or internal game art far better than RPGFan's artwork gallery would have me believe?
Seriously every single female character in the art gallery looks like they just walked out of Grenadier. And half of them have H-face to boot.
I'm almost more than willing to judge this book by that 'cover' alone (which makes you kind of a pathetic artist when I can compare your art to anything IF, or hell 4-chan (Katawa Shoujo), has put out and say you by far have given your cast the 'porn-tastic' treatment); if not for it seeming to have something good enough to catch everyone's eye around here.

I like the art. :/
The only Growlanser game I've played before is Growlanser V and I actually enjoyed that, both on a gameplay level and due to the fact that it's one of the very few SRPGs where I actually cared about the story and characters. Everyone says this one is miles better, so I'm not worried in the slightest.

I'm not saying it's 'bad' art; I'm saying the female half of the cast has pretty much been painted with the blunt end of the fan-service brush and left battered on the cutting room floor. XP I can stand a reasonable number of fanservice characters (or more if the fanservice is toned down per character). But when you have the
entire
female cast done up with pretty much every fanservice technique under the sun; there's some serious problems.
Just to list; almost every female character (in the gallery) has at least half of the following:
-Inappropriate, over-sized blush
-H-face (basically O-face without quite going into O-face territory)
-Over-sized breasts
-Exposed thighs
-Glistening skin (it's a particular effect that I used to think was H-game character only as that's where it predominately crops up)
-Chainmail bikini syndrome
-Nipple eye-catch ornaments
-Crotch exposure (minorly so; but still present)
-Overt cleavage exposure
-Demure, un-assertive, if not outright submissive posing
Again, fine for a character or three, fine if only a fraction of this list is spread out over the entire cast; not really good advertising for your game if every female pretty much has all of these.
These aren't characters; they are models for the next line of blow-up doll. XP
(I know; technically I'm just 'ranting' about a minor part of the game. It just seems like it wouldn't be too much to ask the creators to treat their creations with a little respect you know?)

Hey now, there are plenty of male characters who can't figure out how to operate a jacket or a shirt.
But yes, the artwork was done by a guy who has also done an occasional hentai and is notorious for all of his characters having that plastic look to them.
