Going back and reading old reviews, some great quotes

first off, this is in no way an attempt to belittle any reviewer. I no longer use sites like IGN for Jrpg reviews. They give everything a 7. Its like they dislike Jrpgs in general and just give them all the same score.
anyway, was reading some old reviews and found some good quotes. Its funny to look at how opinions may change over time.
Quote
Stephen Harris on Star Ocean Till the End of Times story,
"The story of Fayt is one of the most remarkable adventures ever to grace a console RPG in recent memory. "
that twist at the end didn't do it any favors!
Quote
Kyle E. Miller on FFXIII's story
"The developers seem to think FFXIII has a good story, which only shows all the more that the writers at Square Enix are a panel of boobs with no conception of good storytelling."
couldn't agree more.
Quote
Ashton Liu on final fantasy 2,
"Perhaps in the course of the nearly 30 hour romp I had through Final Fantasy II, I missed some mystical item that magically makes the game fun and so I was never able to actually appreciate the full worth of the game. But the possibility of anything of the sort is slightly below my chances of winning the lottery"
Quote
Esque on Squall lead character in FFVIII
" I've rarely had as strong a connection with a character in a game. His soul is laid bare before us and the game's story takes on a much more personal feel."
we'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

Ash is a great writer.
If he hasn't ... I wish Parn wrote angry-gamer reviews here.

I remember one reviewer here loved the fuck out of Stella Deus where most of us here wanted to spit on it.
I can't remember who, but please someone take credit, someone wrote a sarcastic review/summary of the events in 13-2.

I'm not sure whose opinion you're talking about having changed.

Shiguma. I remember he used to hype that shit up and I was so pumped for it to come out. It eventually came out and it sucked.
I do want to give it another chance. Someday I'll replay it... maybe.

That's the one!
Well...it IS good, just extremely...EXTREMELY bare bones. The conditions to get any of the "secret" characters was pretty retarded too.
A funny review I gave was loving the hell out of Spirit Track after I pre-release bitched about it the whole time. To my defense, it actually does a good job...in the dungeons, and unfortuantely everything else is lost on the retarded choo-choo travel mechanics and the goddamn touch screen. It also had a second dungeon boss harder than...like... most Zelda bosses (oh wait, that may not be saying much...)
I dunno, maybe I'm a dinosaur, but I freaking hate this whole interactive-Link business... Unless it's me aiming a 3DS for my bow and arrow (arguably making the boss in the Forest Temple in OoT easier).

Agreed with Dice on the insanity behind getting characters for Stella Deus. But beyond that, I'm really glad Ryan "Shiguma" warmed me up to Stella Deus before I played it. He played the import, and then I played the domestic version. And frankly I really like it. I like the weird no-nose character art, I like the desolate world, and I LOVE the 3-way conflict between a religion of pacifists who pray for God to kill everyone, a bunch of militarist activists involved in the wholesale slaughter of the resigned pacifists as part of their hope to save the world by man's hand, and then the insane middle-ground where you find yourself as the protagonist.
Seriously, it's a very memorable SRPG for me.
Also, I still love FF8, mostly for its plot THEMES (not so much plot execution) and the art / music.
Also also, I love Ash attacking FF2.
Never played SO3, but I know why people panned it.

SO3 is like Xenogear... it falls apart the moment you swap discs.

I recall it falling apart around the point you reach the first planet and going "Prime Directive? We don't need no stinkin' 'Prime Directive'!" and then it was swords and sorcery all the way until the big fight that happens right after not-Sophtia buys the farm which itself gets interrupted by aliens and Fayt's Jesus Beams.

I'm a bit of an ox and a moron, I can usually gab about plot and details there, but I'm completely dense when it comes to themes. What the heck were they in FF8?
I remember liking the final acts of Stella Deus, I thought the message was in the right place, and found the ending theme song incredibly cheesy but warming up to it like mad (mmm, warm cheese).
SO games have a better battle system than most RPGs. Poor Star Ocean, don't listen to all them haters!
Which reminds me... what the fuck is Tri-Ace even up to these days?? :S

I actually love Elicoor in SO3. I wish the rest of the game was as good as that part.
