Just caught up today. Great podcast as usual. Haven't played much of the games listed but the music was fantastic. Weird listening to game music without knowing the context it was in.

Cmon guys ! Where is Quietus?! Or for that matter any other song from 999, that game has a super creepy atmospheric soundtrack(though only a masterpiece if you played the game)

I can't really remember much of the soundtrack from 999. I absolutely love Morphogenic Sorrow but none of the rest really stuck with me. I think Quietus is ok but feel it doesn't stand as strong listening to it outside of the game. Same thing seems to happens with a lot of my favourite game music :(

Edit: Just reread the second half of my post and it seems kind of douchy. Didn't mean for it to have that kind of tone to it :(

You're all good! We appreciate you all listening.

Sorry I haven't been as on top of replies lately, folks-- end of the semester and applying to post-grad programs and stuff has kept me very busy. I'm definitely reading everything you all say though, and I couldn't be more grateful for you listening!

I actually think 999 and VLR have excellent in-game soundtracks, but outside of the game some of them are less "listenable." I don't say that as a "this is bad" but in that they're so dependent on their context for their full impact to be heard. Morphogenetic Sorrow and Blue Bird Lamentation work great outside of the game, but I agree that they're not quite as easy to pick out out of the game.

New episode coming very soon! We've recorded half of it :)

Ye perhaps you are right but I still argue that there are a few standout tracks that are pretty good without context besides blue bird lamentation and Morphogenetic Sorrow and any consequent variant like the end credit piano version renmix of Virtue's Last Reward. I would argue that for example quietus doesnt need context, it has a very sinister and creepy vibe wether you played the game or not and it's rocking cool.

It's been a long time, but our latest episode is now posted.

Enjoy time-travel-centric themes for nearly three hours. :]

Don't forget to email us submissions for Music of the Year podcast, and of course rate and review us on iTunes!

Also, in 2014, be on the lookout for a newer format for the show-- shorter episodes (1 to 1.5 hours), but more frequently. It's a bit too much of a tax on my time these days to get our megasodes out in a timely fashion, so we're switching to this format. Be sure to give us feedback and let us know what you think about that change, so we can keep improving the show to match what you want to hear!

What are the rules for this music of the year podcast? Does it have to be music released in that year or something?
Gonna listen to the podcast tomorrow while I study for Algebra!

Well, we'll accept both. If there's something we didn't play from music that became available in 2013, feel free to send that. Otherwise, we're taking general requests too. Be sure to send a reason why you'd like us to play that song, too, so we have something to say about it when we say why you picked it.

The only appropriate response is that I should replay Mario RPG.  :]

Also-- EndofPi, sorry I never replied, but nothing makes me happier than to hear you're appreciating the tunes in games more! That's quite literally our goal! Thanks a ton for your feedback!

I loved the new episode of the podcast but I was kinda disappointed we didnt see any Ghost Trick tracks since that game just fits the theme perfectly. it would have been cool atleast to hear the classic Main Theme. Was really happy to see some FF8 love though.
Otherwise I have no complaints whatsoever and I am hoping you guys can find more excuses in the future to include more Chrono Cross tracks ahah.

Im just gonna go ahead and kill two birds with one stone here and send my picks for the music of the year thing.
As far as 2013 releases go these would be my personal favourites:(mostly Ys Celceta stuff ahah)

Morning after the Storm - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fnm5vUI7EC8 - This track is fucking amazing, the end.
Ancient Land - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ux3xl6Zdv4 - A perfect kickass track to pump you up for combat.
Dawn of Ys - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dY9XD1zhi2I - More badassery
Ancient Legend - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2wnBGSe9hw - This track is your classic mystery mystical town theme with a slow buildup but a very beautiful melody

And finally something Non-Ys - Hope and Future on the same page - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFQoEP3d3pI - beautiful conclusion to the sombre heart wrenching tale of insanity, death and sacrifice of Soul Sacrifice with this vocal track.

For a non 2013 suggestion:
Im just gonna limit myself to 1 suggestion because then I would be here all day listing stuff.

Crystal Teardrops(Castlevania SOTN) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWwJEQt90qk - I think this track fully encompasses the amazing atmosphere present in Symphony of the Night, this is a type of track that only top composers manage to pull off. Truly memorable.

Been awhile since I posted suggestions.  For some reason or other people have been using the word "terrible" a lot lately, which always reminds me of Charles Barkley, so... there's a really interesting song from Barkley Shut-up and Jam Gaiden called Eternity that I'd recommend for the show.  It's bonkers and doesn't fit the game at all, which is awesome.

I've also been playing Might and Magic X Legacy lately, and I like a couple of songs from it (unfortunately none of the battle themes came with the deluxe edition's soundtrack though <sniffles> )

I can at least link the main theme which I think is pretty good.  I'll also link a gameplay footage video that has the boss theme in it, since I think it's a pretty darn good boss theme.

Phew, this is my first time posting suggestions; I better make a decent impression!

For the "best of 2013" spiel, I honestly feel like even though there were some good releases this year, I feel like 2013 was better for arrangement CDs than it was for official soundtrack releases, especially considering Falcom's Zanmai Albums, the first (and FANTASTIC) Project Destati release, and the Chrono Trigger Orchestral Rearrangement CDs came out this year.

As for official releases however, allow me to put forward a few of my favorite tracks of the year. This is going by VGMDB's release year and not year of game release or release in America.

"Don't Speak her Name!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdMS2eUaqsY
and ID~Purpose http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bio99hoZVYI from Fire Emblem Awakening

Jubilife City http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7CM6WYh-N0
and Snowbelle City http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYObC_LRETk from Pokemon X/Y

Don't Be Defeated by a Friend! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-75vj2HEJE
and Enormous Inner Strength http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDXr9IlX_Yc from Legend of Heroes: Sen no Kiseki

That's it for my 2013 faves, but I'll wrap this post up with a track I feel would've fit in perfectly with the last topic as there IS Time Travel in this game.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98tdUZ-JRCg
Le Ali Del Principio from Baten Kaitos II/Origins is simply a hauntingly beautiful piece that shows that even though his work has gotten stale in recent years, Motoi Sakuraba at his best one of my top composers.

Monsoon is right, Stephen understands. :]

Sorry we've been quiet lately-- working on *cough* something I think you music-lovers will enjoy.

Al, I'm actually quite impressed by those M&MX tracks. I've wanted to play that for a while, because I'm a big fan of the genre. Those videos you linked sounded cool-- and the game looked like something I'd enjoy, too! Also, I can't tell if you're joking about Eternity or not, but that's my favorite joke song ever. It's from Blue Dragon, and it's sung by Ian Gillam from Deep Purple :D It's definitely bonkers and fun to listen to though. Editor Brian Tomlinson has nightmares related to this song, maybe you can get him to tell you why sometime.

Arklight--
I get sad the more I hear FE:A's OST, because I disliked the game so much but the music is SO GOOD. I love both of those that you linked. We've already got some FE:A in the upcoming episode(s), but I'll see about getting one more of yours in the audience section ;) Also, I was really surprised by that Sen no Kiseki track-- that IS ridiculous epic. Another listener, Retta (I'm listening to your picks, I promise!) sent me a ton of Sen no Kiseki tracks, and I have to say I've been more than impressed (and not just Falcom-impressed) by what I've heard from it. I might have to try it out sometime. I was a big fan of that Snowbelle City track, too.

(Also BK:O all of the time!)

That's great, but you can't get into the series with Sen. The order is FC > SC > 3rd > Zero > Ao > Sen > Sen II. The stories are heavily intertwined and playing them out of order just isn't possible, except for Nayuta, which is a spinoff that has no ties to the main series.

You guys have been neglected.

http://www.rpgfan.com/news/2014/1256.html

Not anymore. Check back every day this week for awesome music-related content, and for parts 1 through 3 of the biggest (7 hours!) Rhythm Encounter ever.

Your picks will be in part 3, so definitely listen to that one for shoutouts and listener's choice. This first ep has Don from Square Enix Music Online and Mac from RPGamer, along with some new and old RPGFan editors!
