Whatever anime you're watching now, it sucks. Stop watching it. The shitty and unrealistic romances that seem to lead to nowhere? Stop watching that. The completely absurd and overdone fight scenes? Fuck that. The overly girly main female lead fighting with the tomboy who's a feminine flower in her heart of hearts over the loser main guy who nobody would bat an eyelash at in real life? Get real.
Everything else is categorized as "that shit" now. So now, instead of watching that shit, do yourself a favor and watch Death Note, a show about a guy murdering people mercilessly and a cat and mouse game between him and the world's greatest detective. You'll thank me for it, I guarantee you.

Yeah, what he said. Death Note is without a doubt this season's best anime. It's a dark, physological thriller though, so it will not appeal to everyone. But if you like stuff like Monster you're going to love Death Note.
Some people are bashing it for being "too slow", but those people are clearly morons. While there's not really much in the way of action, there
is
a lot of awesome executed dialogues and monologues and L's and Light's battle of wits is shaping up to be something extraordinary. But yeah, if Naruto and Bleach are your favourite animes ever you should probably stay away.

Is it the same as the manga or are there differences?

I haven't read the manga myself, but
those who have
say that it's an incredibly faithful adaptation. So probably won't be many surprises for those who've already read through all of the manga.

It's quite faithful. The animation is top notch too, everything has a dark and morbid feel to it including the animation and visuals.
It's really good stuff.

I'm into the manga a lot right now, so I'm goingto wait until I read everything available before I go for the DVD.

Sounds great. I haven't watched a non-Cowboy Bebop, non-Studio-Ghibli anime in a long time. :P

Did someone say macabre murder mystery psychological thriller?
Methinks I'll have to look into this Death Note.

I have read the manga and I thought the begining was great, but around half-way through the manga, got too complicated and fell apart to me and it just feels more dense. Seen the first episode of the anime at the con I was at, and I agree that the portrayal is very well done. I prefer watching it when all or a lot of the episodes are out to make it more enjoable to me. Perhaps I can get into it more than the manga hopefully.
Very good stuff, but I also like to stick with my shitty anime :P

I watch it every week. I used to read the scanlations rather obsessively and now I'm collecting the manga. Though the story of the anime is nothing new, the whole presentation has style. I love the last few minutes of the first episode.

That description sounds right up my alley. I can't believe I haven't watched this yet!
I also found the first paragraph in your first post very humorous.
