First off: SPOILERS AHEAD

Second off: This is (mostly) just for humor purposes. I know some stuff is a stretch, but it's all part of the fun.

An officer in a elite intergalatic force commits an atrocity that kills many people, only to be headed off and forced to flee by a young upstart hero. The officer flees into the depths of space. To hunt him down, the hero is put in command of the most advanced spaceship in the fleet, trying to follow in the footsteps of his mentor, the ship's original captain. The hero and his crew hunt down and engage the officer, only to learn from him of an even more pressing threat. This threat comes in the form of a massive, powerful warship they have no hope of defeating conventionally. But, using knowledge from a old, wise source, they are able to destroy it, as the heroes hunt down and defeat the officer as he attempts to use the ship to destroy the elite organization's intergalatic headquarters. But the hero's ship is torn to pieces by a massive ship, and during the destruction the hero makes a sacrifice play to save his crew, and dies. The hero is later brought back from death by very illogical means, given an upgraded version of his destroyed ship, and sent on a mission into deep space.

Is it Star Trek: Into Darkness, or Mass Effect?

 I don't even know anymore.

I think what's to be learned of this is that either J.J. Abrams or a few of his more relied upon writers has played Mass Effect.

I guess I should be looking forward to Star Wars: Episode VII. Return of the Normandy.

Well it's a common theme in scifi anyway.

Well...Star Control 2 at least.

I watched that movie and I thought it was shit.
Halfway through I started imagining how the scenes would play out if the good guys had a knives.
Hint: the movie would have been over a lot quicker.

My mom wanted to spend some time with me and called me going like "you like Star Trek, right? let's go see it together."
Since I'm not an ingrate, I said yeah...

Still better than either Voyager or Enterprise.

Besides, they're movies. The last time they tried to make a movie like an episode of Star Trek, they called it The Motion Picture and it sucked royally.

Though I will admit the new Treks lacking the camaraderie between the characters that the original series had.

I haven't seen it, but friends of mine found it fine.  To each their own?
Maybe it helps they don't really have a referent with the series (be it the old TV series or ME, or...whatever).

I have to say that Star Trek Into Darkness seems to be one of the most divisive movies to hit theaters in a long time. I've heard just about every opinion under the sun on the "WORSHIP OUR NEW LORD!" to "BURN IT WITH FIRE!" scale.

It's just that they dudebroed Star Trek.

Technology doesn't matter anymore; every villain must be defeated by infiltrating their ship and brawling the fuck off their faces.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH!

The only thing interesting in the new ones is the Spock x Uhura thing.

If they ever try and recast Picard in this horrible new trekverse I'll rage out with the greatest fury this information superhighway has ever seen.

I doubt you'd be alone in that regard. Pretty sure JJ would have to hire a small army of bodyguards if he ever dared to do such a thing.

For future clarification - I didn't mind the movie. While it had lots of similarities to other media, it was still entertaining.
