Indie Game Music
« on: June 24, 2013, 10:53:21 AM »
I've been discovering more and more how much good music is being made for all those "smaller" games out there. PSN, XBLA, iOS games, Indie PC games, etc.
The Game Music bundles(http://blog.gamemusicbundle.com/) have really helped. I'm loving pretty much every soundtrack I've heard by Zircon. The Fittest and Globulous(with Jeff Ball) soundtracks are great.

I'm also digging Modules work. Shatter is totally groovy. I love his original music, too. Imagineering is fantastic.
I love Austin Wintory's soothing movie soundtrack style used in Horn and Journey.

The soundtrack for inMomentum by Gareth Coker just gets your blood pumping.

Dust, Braid, To the Moon are all great. I could go on and on.
So what else is out there? What am I missing? Share some great music, please!
Thanks

Man, it sure would be great if a super cool music podcast got to interview those crazy Ducks about their amazing music.

Hyperduck does indeed rock. I own the Dust soundtrack, as well as a few of their previous games. Their music for Penny Arcade 4 is fantastic. The air ship song is my favorite.

I don't agree. That just looks like a thread to post favorite songs. I asked for a particular type of music here.

I hear what you're saying, but then what does the "Feel free to drop any kind of video game music here anytime you want" that I posted in the OP means?

Dude, let the mods decide. But I think it's different enough to be it's own topic. Not worth internet arguing about, right? Cool.

This is a different enough topic to warrant keeping it. Are we supposed to move All VGM discussion to the random thread? This is a more specific conversation. Appreciate the effort to keep things clean, but the two threads are for different thing s.

I'm a big fan of Aaron Walz's work.  He did the soundtracks for the Aveyond games and Yummy Drink Factory.

*shameless plug* I interviewed him a few years ago.  Really cool guy.  http://www.rpgfan.com/features/Aaron_Walz_Interview/index.html
Games I've given Editor's Choice to:
Ever 17, Hourglass of Summer, Anachronox, Persona PSP, Radiant Historia, To The Moon, Revolution 60

There's no question that some of the best VGM coming out right now is from the small-timer indie folks.

Rich "Disasterpeace" Vreeland is a chiptune allstar. His soundtrack for FEZ is very good, and the two arranged albums (featuring dozens of other artists) are very good as well (they are FZ: Sides F and Z respectively).

I reeeeally like the work of Alec Holowka. His best soundtracks are Aquaria and Offspring Fling!

And agreed on HyperDuck. They just keep getting better and I don't understand how that's possible. If you go back to "ARES" -- it's a pretty good rock soundtrack. But then Dust ... wowowowow. I'm still absorbing PAA4.

I'll also mention:

Jessica Curry's soundtrack for "Dear Esther" for those who like sparse, minimalist acoustic string kind of stuff
David Housden's soundtrack for "Thomas Was Alone"
Francisco Cerda's kick-your-face-in-with-amazingness soundtrack to the indie shmup "Jamestown"
Aivi Tran and Surasshu on the upcoming game CRYAMORE -- tons of music has already been released for it and the game's not even out.

HyperDuck is probably my favorite, but I also have lots of love for Danny Baranowsky. Three boss tracks from Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac:

The Ballad of Lil Slugger
Fast Track to Browntown
Divine Combat

My favorite song from BoI was with the Wrath of the Lamb expansion. "Cathedral" -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=il6qYTRXg1w

That is beautiful. Danny shows a lot of depth here.

Great that you mention Aivi, Pat, because she's coming on Rhythm Encounter soon to talk music with us! She is incredibly talented. I love her work. The Black Box is a fantastic (though not STRICTLY game-related) album.
