OK, so we were all mad when they decided to follow-up a critically-acclaimed and successful game with a mediocre (OK, most of the reviews say it's "good for a mobile game", but they always seem to need to include that "for a mobile game" phrase and they all bitch about the shitty touch controls...) mobile spin-off.  But this is completely absurd.  Jailbreaking is perfectly legal and there are plenty of legitimate reasons to do it.  Jailbreaking != piracy.  It's bad enough they would make the game unplayable on jailbroken devices, but the worst part of this whole story is that they didn't bother to tell anyone.  So you have people legally purchasing this game only to find out they can't do squat with it.  And I don't think S-E is offering refunds...

Idk if SE is directly to blame. Wouldn't this be more an Eidos thing?

What a shame...

Is always easier to blame SQEX because everybody does it and there's also a long story of "stuff" with them making Squaresoft fans salty most of the time. But yeah, I'm wondering the same thing here.

I'm speechless actually.
The amount of stupid in this decision is unfathomable.

Eidos = Quebec
Quebec = Completely legal to jailbreak (made incredibly clear by our new copyright law)

Some carriers here even give you jailbroken phones by default.

Something that we know that Squeenix is responsible for.

^Go play Indie games or something.

That smells like Otaku money. But... I don't know what kind of person would buy that anyway.

Indie games exist outside the gaming industry.

The gaming industry's pretty much just exploitation at this point. I want it gone :(

I believe that's why they said go play indie games....I don't know though...the context is very difficult to read /sarcasm

All right, we are going to use a fan brush here and uh why don't you take some hunter green and we are going to put a happy little bush right down over here in the corner there and that'll just be our little secret and if you tell anyone that that bush is there I will come to your house and I will cut you.

Can't tell if this is Square being a good guy, or if square was just testing the water with this and seeing if people would put up with it.

1. Square Enix IS publisher, to the point they phased out the Eidos name. It's reasonable to assume there is a call on their part, or at least the Western divisions as representing the company.

2. It happened with Chaos Rings and rooted Androids.

Eh they might be responsible for it, but it isn't that shocking. I'd rank that maybe as a 3 on my "WTF Japan" scale. It is just a swimsuit pack, fairly standard in Japanese games for better or worse. Although I did enjoy how towards the end of trailer when going through the cards(?) the scrolling immediately reversed course once it came across a non-swimsuit image. In my mind the person at the controls was screaming out "Crap that one isn't a swimsuit! Reverse course! Find something jiggly!"

Came here to say this.  Also happened on other FF games as well.  I have no beef with them doing this (however stupid it may be because there are already workarounds to get it working again), but there needs to be a warning on the page that says it won't work on rooted devices.

At least they are making it right (from the Joystiq article linked above):
"No customer should be out of pocket when we were not clear from the start, so we'll get the game updated as soon as possible so that everyone who wants to play Deus Ex: The Fall can do regardless of whether their device is jailbroken or not. As soon as this update is live we will communicate this via the Eidos Montreal Community channels"
