LibraryThing: Cataloging your books
« on: July 18, 2013, 02:55:00 PM »
Howdy everyone,

Recently I stumbled upon this website and found it to be really, really cool. :) I think what's cool about it is that not only does it catalog your books, but also show other users who have the same book(s)...and perhaps the same interests! I actually found two professors (one from New Hampshire and the other from the one I just graduated) on here by linking the same books.

Generally, I don't geek, but when I do...

Perhaps I'll see some of you on there?

Seems interesting, but if I put on my entire library, I'm gonna exceed the 200 books free limit :O

Oh yeah, I have no intention in NOT passing that. ;) I'll eventually upgrade to a lifetime account to upload a heck of a lot more. I also saw they are selling a CueCat as well (I haven't seen those in years!) which I might look into. I know I have 250 books+, so I might look into investing in that as well. :)

Wait, so how is this different from Goodreads?

Wait, so how is this different from Goodreads?

From what I can see, Goodreads looks like a social network for book lovers. LibraryThing offers more for book owners who wish to electronically catalog their collection and tag them with specific terms, so as it is easier to find books for a certain topic.

Take my Tags page for example (http://www.librarything.com/tags/Rhythmroo): That's a fraction of the amount of tags I'm going to be adding to this for cataloging my books. I don't have that option in Goodreads, only putting books in my collection and telling everyone that I read it, in the process of reading it, rated it, and/or reviewed it.

I probably would recommend Goodreads for people who love books and want to connect with other book lovers, but would not recommend it for people who are trying to archive/catalog their collection by their own criteria--then I would recommend Librarything.com.

I hope this answers your question. :)

Yeah Goodreads is clunky as hell and needs a good update.

In a related note, Castnuri is a friend of mine on goodreads.

I miss her around here!

I once spent hours scanning my library into goodreads via the barcode scanner, and ugh, it didn't save. Never again.
