I don't know why it wouldn't work.  They're the ones who said they "haven't solved that yet".  That kind of implies that there's something to solve...

I imagine they wouldn't care enough since the 2DS is supposedly targeted towards another market.

They'll survive. Remember that an entire generation of kids played with NES controllers.

Well, they're supposed to extend pretty far down the sides and you can press them from the side, rather than having to get your hands over the top of the unit.

NES controllers didn't even have shoulder buttons.

The fun thing is that their current shop model sort of contributes to piracy, in the sense that there's huge impetus for people to figure out how to circumvent the DRM so thye can backup/move their legitimately purchased games, since there's no other way to do that -- but then obviously these methods burble out and get picked up for less-than-kosher purposes.

NES controllers didn't even have shoulder buttons.

Well, I'm just stating that people were fine even before controller ergonomics were a thing.

Truthfully, violin and piano destroyed my hands more than any game controller or portable console.
