If you want a Vita then get a Vita, man.  I certainly don't subscribe to the "Vita has no games" school of thought (didn't we just have a thread on that...).  I love my Vita...well, other than the price of those damn memory cards.  Make sure to account for that.

The Vita offers value if you are into using PSN and dat OLED screen (for now anyway) and the 3DS offers a nice catalog of original titles. Your choice.

Hehe XD

Anyway, if you're getting a Vita, invest in a larger memorycard. Not just for the PS Plus games, but also for other PSN offerings. For instance, if you like visual novels, you may want to try Corpse Party. There's also a bunch of PSone RPG's on there, so if you missed out on any the Vita is a great way to catch up.

Having the money to only buy one this summer, I opted for a 3DS.

I think the argument for the superior library (at this point in time) is pretty easy to make for 3DS.

PS3, all the way. Not sure why you're knocking it out, it's got a much bigger library than the others, and at this point, you can get the back catalog for really cheap. I had an XBox360 for most of this generation. When it finally red ringed, I reluctantly got a PS3, thinking there wouldn't be too many exclusives to warrant going back... I was wrong. It's just a brilliant system with a huge library. And it sounds like you don't even have a 360, so your possible catalog is going to be massive. And I've had a lot of great times with using it as a blueray player and computer video streamer.

I don't play handhelds much these days. I have a PSP and 3DS, and they get very little love. I just don't find the games quite as engaging with that footprint. I like to see them on a nice big screen and get sucked in. Handhelds just lend themselves too much to distractions, and I'm pretty ADD.

I don't think anyone is telling him not to buy a PS3 (PS3s are great!), but to make a different system his priority. The next generation is just around the corner, so the current one is only going to get cheaper. Might as well wait a bit longer for another price drop (or at the very least a very good bundle).

You should try a Vita sometime. That OLED screen is pretty amazing! It's like playing on an awesome TV... if you were a giant and the screen had buttons right next to it.

It'd actually easier for me to get sucked in while playing a handheld game. There's less that can get between me and the screen, so there are less distractions.

I'm kinda surprised/happy to see all the PSV love.  It's been slow to warm up if I saw it any way, but good to see the warm reception here (I'm still waiting for that "one title" to make me fork over the cash).  All this reminds me too: I gotta get into indie games more

I don't even know when kids even wore those hats.

I'm fully in favor of what the 2DS is trying to do (and its great for budgeting peeps and young kids I'm sure); I just don't know how much it'll sell.
