Title says it all.  If this is a repeat topic then feel free to redirect / combine / delete.

For me it's a tough choice between fighting games, platformers, and action/adventure games, but ultimately I have to go with platformers.  Games where you control running and jumping cartoon characters are about as video-gamey as you can get.  Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, Donkey Kong, Rayman, Ratchet, Jak, Sly, Meat Boy, you name it.  I love me some platformers.

It'd be easier to list the things I don't like. Sports and fighting games. Those I'd never play on my own and I'd only play sports if it's along the lines of NBA Jam or Mutant League Hockey or NFL Blitz. I'm not a fan of shooters as I can rarely beat them.

I have a soft spot in my heart for survival horror and adventure type games. Just about any game like that on PS1/PS2 is something I dig

Turn-based strategy all the way.

Side-scrolling Platformers. Bonus points if they are a Metroidvania, a sudo-Shmup, or a side-scrolling brawler with some RPG-like elements therein.

Alternatively, 3D rail-shooters (i.e. Star Fox, Panzer Dragoon, Sin & Punishment, etc.).

Top-down games are also solid, even if they tend towards ARPG.

And it depends on the game in particular but RTSes have been a great way for me to waste time on (especially Age of Empires).

I like all sorts of genres outside of RPG, but if I had to pick two, it would be Open-World Adventure (Brutal Legend, InFamous, ZEL.DA. (it is NOT an RPG)) and Arcade Racing.

Suffice it to say, one of my favorite non-RPG games of this generation was Burnout Paradise

Hack & slash / Devil May Cry derivatives are my weakness.

Fighting games and Action-Adventure. I play fighting games as my anti-RPG - something I can pick up and play for a while without having to worry about story or location...or save points. Action-Adventure I'd say is sort of an extention of my love of RPGs (or perhaps RPGs are an extention of my love of Action-Adventure?). I also like other genres sometimes, but these are the ones I have consistantly gone back to for the past 3 years or so.

Outside of RPGs and graphic adventures, my favorite genre is fighting games.  I also enjoy puzzles games, a good arcade-style racer every so often (i.e. I had more fun with Need for Speed than Gran Turismo) and am getting more into rhythm games.

What, no farm simulators?

I really like them :(

Didn't know if they counted as Kimberley reviews Harvest moon games here.
Farming Simulator 2013 was good too.

Edit Just realised you were talking to Star rather than everyone in general.

What, no farm simulators?

Well I'll admit that I do enjoy the occasional game of Agricola, but I didn't think board games counted.

Or are you referring to Squeenix or MMO games in general?

I like point and click adventure games.  That was the genre that sparked my love of gaming.  I switched to RPGs when the genre started dying.  Luckily the Europeans kept it alive and we still see steady releases now.  I also love that visual novels are catching on.  Basically I love story focused games and picross.

Tough.

I'd say it's in a weird circus of Metroidvanias, Point and Clicks, Beat 'em Ups, Metal Slug/Contra style shooters, Doom-style shooters and 3D platformers.

Since it's bottling down to two with you people I have to say Beat 'em Ups and Doom shooters. Though 3D platformers/Metroidvanias make a close third.
