Research on the most important RPGs of all time
« on: March 06, 2014, 08:10:50 PM »
Hi!

I'm currently part of a research group on video games genres, and I'm myself assigned to RPGs. The ultimate goal over the years will be to be able to describe in details the evolution of the genre, although a first step will be to try to determine which games are considered as the best and most important of all time. It's important to us to have varied sources, such as academia, media and the community of gamers. That's where I need your help, as RPG fans and specialists. I would like to know which RPGs you consider as essential. You can answer either here or by PM, and I'll be glad to compile and share the results, which I'll do next week. Your help will be greatly appreciated as your opinion will be crucial for my research! Here are the general criteria:

-I don't ask for a specific amount of games. It can be a top 3, a top 20 or any amount option you'll prefer.
-Please let me know on what general criteria your choices are based. I do not ask for anything specific.
-For each game, please add a short explanation for that specific choice.

Thank you!
I have fury!

RPGfan has also done a pretty great Top 20(?) RPGs for DS and PSP.  Those might be fun to look at.

I'm still game to help if needed.  Might be good to ask on Gaf or something like that if there aren't enough responses here either.

FFVII, Suikoden II,  and Crono Trigger. And Zelda, of course. If you're talking about important classics..these are.
Currently playing: .

For historical significance, I would mention the Ultima series (particularly Ultima IV Quest of the Avatar with its use of ethically harbored story narrative), perhaps Phantasy Star (which heralded the modern age of JRPGs with more robust narrative storylines, preset characters with backstories and stuff, and for being one of the first RPGs to feature a strong female protagonist), and definitely Final Fantasy VII for opening the floodgates for JRPGs going from a niche "dorknerdgeek" genre in the western hemisphere to a mainstream genre.
Games I've given Editor's Choice to:
Ever 17, Hourglass of Summer, Anachronox, Persona PSP, Radiant Historia, To The Moon, Revolution 60

Seconding this.  Not only for its gameplay, but also for its advancements in music.

Should you like to focus on strategy/tactical RPGs, the earliest one I know of to really take off (in Japan) was Fire Emblem. In the US, it was Shining Force.

Tactics Ogre / Final Fantasy Tactics would then deserve their own special recognition for redifining the genre with jobs/classes, and for making isometric viewpoints the hot new thing.

Among action RPGs I'd point to the Ys series and the Seiken Densetsu series.

I'm just a "tech guy", but I would say Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars could be viewed as the beginnings of game companies with disparate development approaches/styles collaborating to produce mind-blowing titles. Also, bringing the JRPG style to the "unpolished Nintendo" / more-mainstream-ish world... it is Mario, after all :)
