Trek has been sucking less lately with the Abrams movies

I think you spelled "completely ruined by" incorrectly.

Right, because the Romulans cloning Picard thinking he's the Federation's equivalent to Big Boss or something then giving him like 5 battleships duct taped together into one boring ass monstrosity was totally something that could be ruined (not to mention killing off Data and replacing him with Before).

I think they're both fine, but I'm a Trek guy at heart.  I recently stumbled across a DVD collection of all of the alternate reality/altered timeline/altered life episodes from all of the series, and it's reminded me of the stuff I loved about it.  All of the series have their bad episodes - some a higher percentage than others - but they all also have good ones.

This is the DVD set I got.

haha I LOVE that they do these "specific collections".  I got the "Q collection" myself. x)

I also have no real beef with the Abrams movies (besides laughing at the excessive lens flare).  But I never really invested myself to the original Star Trek.

No.

I echo this somewhat, but then Trek has been bad for a long while now, so "sucking less" would be appropriate depending on how you read it. The TNG movies were all pretty bad, but the Abrams movies are pretty bad too. I'm not against trying to add more action to Trek (this is something a couple people unfamiliar with Trek like to state, but it's not like even the good Trek movies outside of 4 were nothing but dialogue end-to-end) as long as you keep some substance. Star Trek 11 had some excuse of needing to revive a franchise that had been cursed with one bad movie after another plus a canceled TV series, but Into Darkness supposedly had no such handicap and somehow ended up being worse.

Fair enough, a lot of recent Trek stuff has been pretty bad.  For me, whenever someone says "Star Trek" I immediately think of TNG (TV, not the movies) or TOS movies because that's what a grew up with and that's what "Star Trek" is to me.  It's also kind of where the franchise peaked, though DS9 had its moments.  But Voyager, Enterprise, and most of the recent films have all been awful.  And yes, I include the Abrams films in that category, except in additional to being shallow style-over-substance movies they also don't seem to have any idea what Star Trek is all about.

TOS was about Kirk getting a lot of pussy while being a complete (and vaguely xenophobic) asshat, also everything took place in an abandoned office park in New Mexico for some reason.

I'm pretty sure Star Trek up till DS9 was about #firstworldproblems, then became #wannagohome for Voyager and #weranoutofideashalfwaythroughvoyager for Enterprise.

Still maintain that Enterprise was part of Quantum Leap and had Sam jumping into the future.

Would he be the shadowy future time war guy? It all makes sense!

In all fairness most Trek plots are pretty pulpy.

Space soldiers need to stop Earth's own creation gone bad from blowing them up while showing their junk.
A guy with a vendetta wants to annihilate worlds but wants to show the hero how much better he is before he does so.
A giant space probe wants to talk to dolphins but almost blows up the world in doing so.
Guys with their heads sewn together have Chernobyl in space and our heroes must scooby doo their way to preventing a war.

I actually liked Star Trek 10 in concept, just they were all done terribly. The Abrams movies are kind of the opposite, they have some issues with the writing made up for by some great actors and a good director (when you finish making fun of the lens flares).

I'd say the writing has more than 'some issues'.  Here is a decent read about some of the problems in the Star Trek (2009) movie.  Even I'll admit that a few of these are pretty nitpicky, but #15, #14, #11, #10, #7, #5, #4, #3, and #1 are all quite damning and speak to how lazy and hackneyed the writing is.

@Kevadu:

I read #1 and saw this comment.

"itís hard to see how Star Trek will go back to its glory days of being a genuine, intelligent science fiction show"

WHEN THE FUCK WAS TOS INTELLIGENT EVER.
