Teenagers are smart enough to try something else, even if they aren't used to gaming. I played Mystic Quest back when I was ~8 and didn't understand much English, and I managed :)

Chrono Trigger for DS is a great one. Simple enough. My first RPG as a kid was Mario RPG. If they can't deal with the look of the game the Mario and Luigi games for DS are really well done. I loved Browser's Inside Story.

One that I always recommend is Kingdom Hearts 1. The story, characters and plots are very charming and easy to follow. The gameplay isn't 100% terrible. This game is simple and clean.

Guardian's Crusade

Lunar 1 & 2.

Grandia 1

Okage Shadow King (now on PS4)

Alundra

Dark Cloud 1 & 2?

Skies of Arcadia

Dragon Quest 4-8 (if you have a 3DS)

Breath of Fire 3
I avoid online multiplayer because my brain still works.
