Clannad
« on: August 24, 2014, 11:44:27 PM »
You know, I was going to make a post about this last night but then I realized I didn't have much to say.  But nobody else has posted on it, so...

Clannad is being localized!!!

Come on, this is a huge deal.  It's a true classic VN, and there aren't exactly a lot of official localizations of Key games out there (actually, is this the first?).

Also, I don't have to bitch about Sekai Project butchering it since it was all-ages to begin with...

Why would Sekai butcher it? They're the reason that there's ONE completely uncensored version of School Days.

It seems that you're correct, they did the localization for that.  It was published by JAST, though, which is why I didn't associate it with Sekai Project.

But all of Sekai Project's self-published stuff (and that seems to be mostly how they're doing things these days) has be released solely through Steam.  And I'm pretty sure adult content isn't allowed on Steam, so...

Admittedly most of what they've done was all-ages to begin with.  But they recently announced that they're doing an all-ages version of Grisaia no Kajitsu, which definitely was not all-ages.  We'll have to wait and see how that actually turns out but having played that game let's just say that I'm skeptical...seems like you would have to cut a lot.

Well, I can somewhat understand the train of thought.

Is it a popular game that we can afford to not sell on Steam (Y/N)

Grisaia no Kajitsu is clearly not popular enough to sell without Steam (I don't even know the game myself)
Clannad could probably sell without Steam but I'm pretty sure most people are fine with the all age version. It's kind of like Utawarerumono where the erotic content feels tacked on and the game didn't need it anyway to be great.

Wait, there is no 18+ version of Clannad in the first place.  It was always all-ages.  That was supposed to be the point of my tiny text ;)

But I feel like we've digressed enough.  Clannad is a great story and people should get it.

There isn't? The things I learn.
I always thought there was one. I mean, there's a version that has "all age" in the title (Clannad: all ages memorial edition).

What did they cut in that one?

I don't see that listed on the VNDB and they're usually pretty thorough...

No, there's no 18+ version. It was originally released as an all-ages title, and has been ever since.

However, there's a sequel released called "Tomoyo After" which is indeed 18+.

This one: http://vndb.org/r8856
The English translation doesn't cover the whole title.

*quick wiki search*

I think the confusion about the 18+ might've stemmed from apparently Kannon and Air (previous titles) having been rated with that kind of content. Sort of a "Duck, Duck, Goose,...wait what?" memory blip.

Speaking of flipping through the wiki, I can't find anything within it or the review here that explains what this story's 'hook' might be. Is it really just a generic dating sim/school life concept? I see the bones. Someone kindly explain to me what the meat is.

Its a VN. 'Serviceable' is the best you can really ever hope for.

I mean, VNs at their core are basically a distilled seasonal day-time soap arc. The only advantage that VNs really have over day-time soaps is the porn/2d waifus (conversely soaps have the advantage of being able to be left running in the background while you do something far more valuable with your time like cooking dinner, reading a book, taking a shit, etc).
In my vision, I see that one of us is going to KO the other.

All VNs are actually 18+ because kanji are REALLY hard and nobody can learn enough until they're 18 to get through a VN.

Aeolus's condescending dismissal of an entire medium aside, the biggest difference between a 'good' and 'bad' VN is in the quality of the writing.  They are, after all, novels first and foremost.

Clannad really doesn't do anything revolutionary.  Well, the After Story part is definitely a departure from the norm.  Unlike your typical bishoujo game (BTW, Clannad is not a dating sim because it doesn't have any sim aspects), hooking up with a girl is only half the story.  But otherwise it's pretty standard stuff.  It's just well-written and a real tear-jerker.

Key made planetarian, right? That story was actually pretty great, and it didnt make me feel all dirty about myself afterwards (like literally every other VN ive ever attempted to sit through) I thought that one had been localized??
