The unofficial "recommend me a game" thread.
« on: September 07, 2014, 08:00:54 PM »
Klutz made a comment about it in the haps thread and I thought it was a splendid idea to start one up, seeing as the number of games to players is astonishingly huge. Anyways, yeah, make a request for a type of game, and all of us awesome guys and gals here will make a serious endeavor to help you out. I'd like to request, however, that we keep the replies to suggestion away from reasons why you won't play X game suggested. If you say "I'm looking for an rpg" then you don't have a real idea what kind of rpg you want, hence any suggestion (even a really outlandish one) is fair game. This way we don't get hurt feelings about wasting our time and energy offering people suggestions.

Anyways, request away.

I request that somebody plays through Beyond the Beyond on this board. Maybe it'll get further than the RPGFFan threads we've had in the past.

(Yes. This is a serious recommendation. And no. I'm not volunteering myself for the endeavor. Once was enough.)
In my vision, I see that one of us is going to KO the other.

If someone has ideas and preferably a similar interest about things with SoL, aesthetic focus over plot and more light theme, preferably such as coming-of-age, I could try it. It doesn't need to be mature or anything, but preferably not plain comedy or reference material game. Could do with one with a minimalistic approach too if something like that exists. Setting should be fantasy, scifi or historical, but I might give it some leeway since this isn't probably the most common type of RPG in general.

One of the GBA Summon Night: Swordcraft Story games. They play kinda like Tales of Phantasia or Destiny except you have only yourself to blame play as (no AI piloted allies for you, which is good for reasons mentioned below). The "plot" in both games are the epitome of 'there' but you can choose which of four different spirits will occasionally chime in to spew largely useless/interchangeable commentary and you can befriend NPCs by hanging out with them at the end of the day and you might even get more text-boxes out of them. Setting is 'whatever' (kinda like the anime Soul Eater). The best part is the fact that you can make a bunch of weapons by finding recipes and loot (including drills) and you can get more recipes by getting human enemies to break their weapons on your face/weapons.

They are games that you might have been describing.
In my vision, I see that one of us is going to KO the other.

Yeah, Sword Craft story's my go-to game when I want some lighthearted story with some decent combat and crafting.

I was gonna list some games that I recall not liking before, but want to give a second chance to. However, I think I'll just buckle down and give FFT Scuffle of the kittens a second chance. I mean, I like the Advance games now, so why not?

Edit: or...maybe I should play Shining Force instead...now I'm confused! @_@

I can't play Shining Force because of Shining Force 2.
It's just better in every way.

IMHO WofTL is probably the best strategy game ever created, you'll kick yourself if you skip it.

Yeah....most of us just call it final fantasy tactics...

Edit: Yeah, I read the reply while at work and missed most of it before I posted. I should have put 2+2 together, my bad.

Final Fantasy Tactics usually refers to the PSX title, while War of the Lions refers to the remake (which is different enough from the original that a distinction needs to be made).

*end nerd rant*

Eh....no....FFTactics is the same game, there is no gameplay change aside from huge ass slowdown and 2 new classes and ad hoc multiplayer on psp as well as a lame translation...psx version was far better for hilarity purposes.

Regardless, played both, know pretty much everything about either, trisection is the greatest music in either game and most of the rest of the FF series.
