The SaGa (emphasis on the captials) Thread
« on: December 14, 2014, 07:12:43 AM »
http://www.siliconera.com/2014/12/14/saga-2015-announced-playstation-vita/

Squeenix just announced a new one today for the series 25th anniversary. Too bad, it's for the Vita ("Stop making me buy things for a dead system Squeenix!").

Between this, the fact that its pretty much competing directly with Legend of Legacy (which, from the looks of it thus far, is only really missing the series name) and that a bunch of other megathread discussion topics of RPGs of yesteryear have been cropping up lately, I figured that the weird, black-sheep/red-headed stepchild of the genre should have a general topic thread too to post Frontier or Frontier 2 nostalgia, or whether The Last Remnant totally counts as a SaGa or not (it totally does).
In my vision, I see that one of us is going to KO the other.

My only experience with the series is FF Legend 3. I remember enjoying it though.

I've played SaGa Frontier. It was the good kind of frustrating. I didn't even know frustration could be good before then. =P

But FF Legends II was pretty awesome, I really dug that one. Romancing SaGa also really seems like my bag.

Hoping the new one is better than Unlimited SaGa...

Edit: saw the Legend of Legacy trailer. All the random crap popping up in real time looks like it'd drive me insane very quickly...think I'll pass on that...

They also announced this Imperial SaGa thing, a browser game. I want to play it but I don't trust it.

I don't care much for the SaGa games although I enjoyed the WonderSwan Color remake of the first game and have been liking the DS remake of SaGa 2, although I've had to do a fair bit of grinding for the final battles.

I remember the first time I played SaGa Frontier.  I kept hearing about how bad it was so I went to my local movie/game rental place and rented it for the weekend out of morbid curiosity.  I wound up playing it that day for 3-4 hours straight, wondering, "Why do people bag on this game so much?  It's really good!"  I would have played it more, but a buddy called me wanting to hang out.  That's when I looked at the clock and was like, "Whoa, I've been playing the game THIS long?  It hardly felt like it..."

EDIT: And, yes, I too am looking forward to Legend of Legacy.  I agree that it seems like a SaGa game in all but name.

SaGa stuff gets a bad rep for poor translations and lots of removed or missing content. I mean, SaGa Frontier 2 is missing whole story segments and characters because funding died down, and it's a semi well known fact that Fuse was supposed to be the 8th character in SaGa Frontier, but again funding. Never played Unlimited SaGa, but I did play the ps2 Romancing SaGa, which had one of the best intros I ever watched on PS2. The series has potential, but it just doesn't get the care it needs to blossom into a truly awesome title.

The biggest problem with the SaGa series outside of being a little too overambitious, is that its a Square series not named Final Fantasy, which for the longest time now, meant that any Square/Squeenix game not named Final Fantasy was going to have some/most/all of its funding funneled into games named Final Fantasy.

Also, it's really hard to go from the "babby's first JRPG" that is Final Fantasy to "what high-tech sorcery is this" that is SaGa. It would've definitely helped to have had Dragon Quest or Shin Megami Tensei to act as an intermediary when I took the plunge (I believe I ended up going for DQVII right after SFII).
In my vision, I see that one of us is going to KO the other.

I hate that the games feel so schizophrenic.  One minute you're dealing with vampires, then dinosaurs, then magical planets, the a casino, then magical amazonessseses....Then you get OHKOd by taking the wrong turn.  They feel incredibly inconsistent across the board.  Despite that I've played a good portion of them, I'm oddly 'attracted' to play them still.

I liked SaGa 2 for being the most 'focused' I think.  That and it had stellar graphics and OST.

Tales of Hearts has been a train of mediocracy, so I actually might welcome a new SaGa game and all of its 'eccentricities'. :)

SaGa 2 (FF Legends 2 for many of us) is definitely the most focused. It's linear, it has a great story that one can easily follow from moment to moment, and even in putting the game down for a month and then turning it back on. The leveling system was well superior to its predecessor (and to FF2, which was doing the same thing at the time). The fifth-character guest slot kept the game interesting from world to world, and your final guest is so wonderfully OP, and then you're deprived for the final battle since essentially there are two final bosses, and OP-friend solos one and your whole party takes on the other. I don't have enough praise for that game.

And yes, dat OST. MMMM

Now, I've been ACHING for a new SaGa game. If you exclude the Romancing SaGa remake (which might be unfair considering just how much new content was poured into that excellent game), the last SaGa game was UNLIMITED:SaGa, widely believed to be the worst in the series (it's the only localized one I've yet to see the end credits for) ... and that game came out over a decade ago. I figured they'd just keep doing remakes with this series to their hearts' content and then forget about it.

So whatever SaGa 2015, all I can do is hope and pray that it won't suck. Because one way or another, I'll be playing the everloving crap out of it. :)

The SaGa games suck.

However, I don't think they suck particularly more than any of Square's other series, and compared to like Final Fantasy, they suck in a way that I find /really/ enjoyable.

Too bad, it's for the Vita ("Stop making me buy things for a dead system Squeenix!").

This like the same situation when Type-0 HD was announced but backwards.

Not sure about the rest of ya, but I don't blame Squeenix at all for hopping on the PS4 instead, quite frankly. : /

I'm not terribly disappointed that its 'on' the Vita (it gives me one more reason to get one than just YsIV), but by the time it comes out in Japan, the system will be totally dead in the west and nobody's going to bother localizing the drat thing (until the PS4/PC port, assuming it ever gets one). It's kinda like what happened with the DS remakes of SaGas 2 and 3, they came out just as the 3DS came out and Squeenix decided to not even bother.

Anyways, confession time. I've only ever actually beaten SaGa Legends 1 and 3 (and shenanigans got involved with 3 by accident; I went to compare my current file with one a little bit ahead of me and I ended up not paying attention and accidentally saved over my file with the other one, I wound up skipping the entire Underworld section by accident). I have gotten up to Valhalla in SaGa Legend 2 (though I haven't beaten Odin yet; I just have a hard time using up all my sweet gear from the bonus dungeon). I tried playing Romancing SaGa earlier this year/last year but for some reason I was having some sort of glitch happen that was blocking my efforts at playing the drat thing so I couldn't get much further than the Highlander woman's start into the main game (like it would just crash when I got to a certain pub). I STILL haven't been able to find a goddamn PSX memory card in the wild after a full year of searching, which has been my biggest obstacle to playing Frontier 1. I believe I got to gen 2 in Frontier 2, but its been ages since I last sat down with my original file (it's sad that I forgot that the only reason why I stopped playing it originally was because I was still renting the damn thing and my rental period was up; thanks to a currently ongoing LP, I'm remembering where I had left off which should make things easier to pick back up again; of course, I'm currently playing Wild ARMs 2 right now so that's also an issue that's keeping me from polishing off SF2).

I haven't gotten around to getting Unlimited SaGa and The Last Remnant yet.
In my vision, I see that one of us is going to KO the other.

Poor Vita can't catch a break.  People are always complaining about the lack of exclusives but when an exclusive is announced they complain that it's not on system X.  There's no way to win...
