I just hope it actually changes in how terrain is being handled instead of all of the environments to be just a flat surface. Similar to how Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre does terrain.

Doesn't look like it, man.  There was plenty of gameplay in that initial trailer, and the environments looked quite nice, but also quite flat.

And hey, I'm playing Awakening for the first time right now and enjoying it quite a bit.  Already pretty jazzed about a second Fire Emblem game similar to it.

The only FE game that ever really dealt with elevation was Radiant Dawn (the Wii one). Incidentally, it had some of the best maps of the series. However, even in RD, elevation was handled quite differently than TO/FFT since the difference between the high and low grounds was represented with a substantial accuracy bonus/penalty respectfully.

Then again, the only times elevation actually matters in TO/FFT is in regards to Bows having extra range (and in FFT the fact that a number of abilities to allow players to just simply vault up sheer cliffs and walls like they were a ledge) which is why you never start on high ground in any story battle in FFT, except in rare instances where it either still doesn't matter or it's still at your disadvantage (none of this matters in TO anyways since just having Archers is more than enough, nevermind the fact that most story battles are just as flat as any FE map). Anyways, this is being made on Awakening's engine so I don't think it'll take elevation into consideration too much either way.

Really though, battles in FE games tend to operate on a wider scale than even the largest TO battle (FFT doesn't even come close to TO's scale due to console limitations and where FFT decided to focus its resources on), so elevation doesn't really factor nearly as prominently as TO/FFT. Then again, they've also played extremely fast and loose with scale in FE with stuff like interior battles taking place in buildings that are only a couple of tiles large in the previous map.
In my vision, I see that one of us is going to KO the other.

I'd been wondering about that! Thanks for the info. Although how was there a difference between elevation and the grass in FE on GBA. That's what that did (altered accuracy).

New trailer is OUT.

= Pick a gender hero (not co-hero like in FE:A but THE hero)
= Pick a choice for two unique perspectives (like Tactics Ogre's big 'burn the village'/'dont' thing I guess)

2016 Release

Trailer:

EDIT:
Dual---version???

What it sounds like is that of the two sides, the eastern one has a majority of characters and is of the one where you're fighting against the evil empire, while the western one is the one where you're in said aggressor country where you're cleaning up the force from all those dirty cops, while stomping the easterner forces.

Either way though it sounds like Dancina will be joining your side regardless as to which side you choose.

I think Nintendo Direct might've used up all of the pre-rendered cutscenes.

Yeah I think you're right on there (I sorta sapped all the fun out of my description to fit it in a sentence).  So thanks for that, I doubt I would have.

I'm just curious, apparently something about 'two versions' was mentioned in the JP direct (I hope they're not Pokemon-ing it).
Quote
Game is sold in two separate versions. After buying one, the other path is available as discounted DLC, as is a third storyline. Limited edition will contain all storylines.

Holy shit, is that true?

So this whole Nintendo Direct can be summed up with:

"We're doing Micro-transactions now!"

Eh, until the JP Direct is up for viewing and someone who can actually report it (and it's somewhat peculiar since the NA one mentioned nothing at all about that), I'd stick that in a sort-of 'rumor' pile.  I also have to admit I love that idea of a dual-path (but definitely not the Poke-Emblem Black/White Edition stuff)

But yeah to the micro-transaction bit....  Honestly though, if it's optional I don't care.  People are apeshit for Amiibo so I think Nintendo is just giving a big shrug and distributing cheap little [rare] collectables as much as people seem to be demanding them.  Plus, I almost felt like WITHOUT these Nintendo just didn't like money --- I'm sure a number of us would pay for Smash DLC, or at least there's enough nostalgic Nintendo fans to keep fueling that DLC fire.  The Wii U is still in the frying pan too, they announced a bunch but it's not like that's anywhere near what they need for a "Wii U renaissance".

If we're lucky, this will hopefully lean more towards the Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Games rather than Pokemon Whatever.

Though, yeah, the rest of it was microtransaction dissatisfaction.

(Ninja Fake Edit: Of course, this being April Fools, I'll wait till I can review the JP stream, or a more reputable source weighs in before I start wailing and gnashing my teeth.)
In my vision, I see that one of us is going to KO the other.

And if that's the case, I'm fine with that.  Maybe I'm reading too much into it and into the trailer, but it really does seem commited to telling two different sides.  So if it's Zelda Oracle-ing it, then that's A-OK with me (or the LE with both and hopefully some other cool junk and other chachkies).

I'd go with Nohr simply because, dammit, that really was a blue and black dress.

Anyways, after looking over the Direct trailer again (and the JP one), I've noticed a couple of things.

First, is that a lot of characters have glowing weapons (there's the Black Knight dude's and Lobster dude's swords, there's some Archer guy's bow and some Mage guy's tome). This probably means that Legendaries are in play here (maybe to the extent that FE4's Legendaries factored into that game). Second, is that there's a brief glimpse of a 2v2 battle in the trailer (though it looks like its between two sets of named characters). Third is that the MU raised a bridge out of Nohrwhere followed by a shot of a Dragon in battle (I know this is the MU since I found confirmation elsewhere, plus it ties into the previous trailer where a Dragon turned into the MU). And finally,
In my vision, I see that one of us is going to KO the other.
