Netflix Is Developing a Live-Action ‘Legend of Zelda’ Series
« on: February 06, 2015, 05:22:34 PM »
From WSJ today:

"Netflix is describing it as “Game of Thrones” for a family audience"

Lol. Wat? Kinda hard to imagine G.R.R.Martin's "everybody must die" style of writing to Zelda. What do you say RPGFans on this breaking news?

I WILL say that most of the Netflix-developed series' have been pretty good...butt I reaaalllllyy don't think this is a route to go.

Too many people to please on this one.

It's certainly one of those things where if it's good it's going to be amazing, and if it's bad it's going to be horrific.

I'd be lying if I said the curiosity isn't gonna kill me, even if the end result is [more likely?] 'horrific'.

Ah well, all the best to Netflix's efforts.  May it not go badly, and for the love of all things holy, please hire a few fans of the series.

Part of me wants it to be a re-imagine of the Legend of Zelda in the modern world.
At least I'd get a damn good laugh.

That sounds like one of the worst things ever.

The thing that makes that bad isn't the "family audience" bit it's that Legend of Zelda doesn't lend  itself to the complex and interweaving stories that make the backbone of GoT

The number of paths for this to work is fairly small, while the number of paths for this to top the CDI games is fairly significant. I am not going to get my hopes up.

Honestly my biggest question right now is what era are they going to be going for or are they just going to make their own? Obvious answer is they make their own (which fill me with dread). However I feel like OoT could be turned into an absolutely amazing series.....although OoT is my favorite so I might be biased.

Agreed. It's far more mythic, and the games themselves (at least those where you have to rescue Zelda) typically tell variations of the same story.

Still, it could be interesting, but it will be such a high profile that they will need to tread carefully so as to not alienate the fans of the series, which could be an impossible task.

Honestly, I know the series isn't as popular as Zelda by any means, but it would make more sense to me if they were to develop a Fire Emblem live-action series.

Honestly, I know the series isn't as popular as Zelda by any means, but it would make more sense to me if they were to develop a Fire Emblem live-action series.

If they go with Genealogy/Thracia (which is probably the best choice plotwise, though Blazing Blade and Path of Radiance would make for usable auxiliary choices), they will be in GoT territory, no questions asked. Fortunately, they're pretty much guaranteed to aim for Awakening instead. Unfortunately, they'd be going with Awakening and its Valmese Vacation/Gaiden arc and there's nothing that they could really pull away from that; to speak nothing on the matter of the Time Travel shenanigans, the other relatively threadbare main plot arcs or the fact that some of the most dramatic moments get retconned with the post game stuff. Either way though, an Awakening TV series will immediately devolve into a massive shipping wars debate regardless as to where its taken.

And then there's the problem that due to the way that normal FE games work, much of the show would consist of massive fights with people peeling off and taking on a few grunts with the occasional dying on the side (and how would the show handle character death? Hitting the Quick Reset button combination? A handy Aum/Valkyrie Staff? Or the usual "I've been wounded and now I must sit on the sidelines for the rest of the game." excuse?).

Getting back on topic though, does Netflix even have a 'go ahead' from Nintendo for this? And if they did, just how many episodes of this will they produce (they could get away with a S1=OoT, S2=MM, S3/4=OoS/OoA and maybe a S5(or S4 if they can squeeze both Oracles into one season)=WW)? Also, how would they handle stuff like having Link smash pots and cut grass everywhere, or teasing Cuccos until they swarm him, or Sword Beams that don't look cheezy as all hell, or Animal Companions?

There are far too many questions regarding this for me to accept this as real (or won't be shut down/go completely silent by the end of the month). Though honestly speaking, if this comes out at all, I would fully expect this to run along the same lines of quality as the old Super Mario Bros. Super Show version.
