Hey! I just reviewed this album.

http://www.rpgfan.com/soundtracks/final-symphony/index.html

It's really, really good. Let's talk about it! Did anyone else pick it up? What did you think?

I was about to buy the whole thing but the ton of piano tracks kinda set me off from it...I'm sure I"m the only person who feels that way though (sorry, just sometimes long piano tracks don't jive with the energy I'm feeling or need to feel).  I've also got what feels like a ton of these non-OST music CDs.  That said, they're ALWAYS so good it's hard not to take the dive.

...Next friday....payday.  Fuckit.

Yeah, they're lengthy!

I commented on this in the review, but it's helpful to think about it as an active listening experience, at least the first few times. It's not an album designed for a studio or home listening first-- it's a real, honest-to-goodness symphony, designed to be listened to in a concert hall as you sit and focus on nothing but the nuances of the music.

I do think, though, that it stands up plenty well to home listening-- and I haven't personally had any issues with fatigue, mostly since these aren't just straight arrangements or medleys of the tunes. There's a lot of variety and embellishment in each movement, and at least for me it has made it a really fun listening experience that stays fresh.

I do sympathize for those who arent used to listening to pieces with that length of time! At first it was daunting when starting my Music degree to do extended listenings, but over time I grew accustomed to it and could sit and listen to music hours at a time (with breaks in between--or mini intermissions ;)). My music theory III/IV professor had us listen to full symphonies (many went from 40 mins to 90 mins). However, that was just listening once, and you don't listen to something just once in music ;)

The Album!

I just bought it and I'm going through it now. Thoughts will be expressed in my next post. So far, I like it. ;)

These are suites ... not mere medleys switching from one song to the next, but different themes that can layer over one another. If you're ready to commit the time, you'll love the experience.

Compare it to their other work, especially the Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger medleys in "Symphonic Fantasies" -- it works so well it's almost stupid. Dag dag dag. Valtonen and Wanamo own my face.

I purchased this album and was not disappointed. I was able to listen to it in its entirety all the way through as well as broken into pieces. I must say that the album is much better if you treat it like an experience. I sat and looked through my Final Fantasy Art Book and listened to the whole thing and it was much better than listening to it track at a time. If anything I would suggest listening to the tracks grouped by game title. Listening to the Final Fantasy X tracks together works really well. I think one would get more out of it if they are more familiar with the material.
