The only tales game that I have ever played was Tales of Xillia. I got what I expected from it. Nothing blew me away but I had a decent enough of a time.

I was working while listening so I cant recall if it was said in the last episode but what is the casts best Tales game?
Also thanks for warning me about how bad Tales of Phantasia GBA is. I have that mint in box somewhere and would have opened it someday. Might as well leave boxed.
I don't think "the show" has a favorite Tales Of game, but that's not a bad idea for an episode!  We do have a history of identifying favorite games on this podcast.

But in general, a lot of people have different favorites.  Mine's probably Vesperia.  A lot of people love Symphonia.  I know Marcos's is Eternia and Alana's is Xillia.  Abyss is really really good, and I've heard the latest one (Berseria) is way better than the others of the 2010s.  So yeah, not an easy question.  Definitely avoid Phantasia GBA.

Somehow, until Xillia 2 blew up Destiny was the bestselling game in the entire series.  Great story and characters, AWFUL gameplay that's clunkier than its Super Famicom predecessor.

I'm guessing that's because of Destiny DC.
Also... Xillia 2 sold that well? dayum.

Abyss was my favorite Tales game for a long time until Graces came along. That combat system was amazing.

Chiming in a little late, but yes, my favorite Tales game is Eternia (tales of destiny 2 when brought over to the US). I enjoyed the gameplay and for whatever reason loved that card game that gets introduced partway into the game (WHIS I believe). But the reeeeeaaal reason why I adore ToE is for its music (big surprise, right?). I adore Sakuraba's PS era music, and this one happened to be my favorite. I mean, the Celestia Battle theme is reason enough. ;)

Hi everyone, it's been a minute.

Retro Encounter just hit episode 100.  The episode itself is an atypical one, where six panelists play a game to pick a future Retro Encounter episode.  They start at a list of 12 games, and end at a list of four games.  Those final four became a poll, and that poll will become a Retro Encounter playthrough episode in November or December.  Episode 100 is partly playing that elimination game, and partly reminiscing about over two years of Retro Encounter.

It contains episode spoilers (technically), but the final poll is right here for your voting pleasure.  The poll will last a week, and go on longer if there's a tie.

In the next two weeks we have a pair of Final Fantasy XII episodes, and in October we continue living in the PS2 era with a pair of Digital Devil Saga episodes.  If you want to give feedback, criticism, or suggestions regarding the Retro Encounter podcast, then message me on the forums or email retro@rpgfan.com.

Dang that poll is tough!  Funny, though, there is literally only one game on that list that I simply won't play ever, and that's the game that's winning, of course.  Here's hoping Vagrant Story (or, less likely, BoF4) can pull off a comeback.

Breath of Fire IV won the poll, and will have two episodes on the podcast later this year. Thanks everyone for listening and voting!
