@Ramza

Maybe put that post in spoilers? Even hinting at anything can ruin the experience.

Well, not many games have a story that can surprise you. And while theres nothing really unique about this games story, its the presentation that counts. Its just so well done. Everybody should have that blind playthrough experience for maximum impact.

Spoiler: show
Little things are unique. Like when a creature makes 85 million clones of itself to fight off aliens. I've never heard of anything akin to that in any sci-fi writing. Or when Adam and Eve are brothers instead of husband/wife. That's unique. Or when the purpose of an organization is to perpetuate a lie, and the final phase of that organization's existence is its self-destruction without any entity, even the leader of the organization, knowing that's all in the plans, to give the lie permanency ... I've never heard any story do all that.

So I think it's more than *just* presentation. Though the presentation is an enormous factor, I grant you that.

Well, there are themes that are part of every element of the story and those broad themes are not unique. How they are presented this game is unique to games. I could probably think of some movies and books with similar themes but of course not exactly the same. So yeah, I guess it is a pretty unique story.

Nobody writes game stories like Yoko Taro.

This marks the first big sells success for Yoko Taro. Turn out it was a very smart idea to let an experience company handle the gameplay while Yoko Taro focused on what he did best, story.

Honestly, it might have been for the best that Cavia went under, assuming others will work on the franchises they were involved in. Their gameplay was usually somewhat lacking.

Man, this game.

I just got done replaying the first Nier after I got endings A-D - just to see how it holds up. While the gameplay of the first Nier is garbage compared to, well, almost any other game, the characterization was far stronger in the original to me. All of Emil's monologues still make me tear up all these years later.

Also, why the hell isnt anyone talking about...

Spoiler: show
that Emil secret boss fight and the wrap up of his story??? That whole monologue had me in tears - I went from, alright just one more quest and then I can put this down, to, BAWWWWWWWWWW.

"Isn't that right, Kaine!?" gave me shivers. Emil's VA is great. And that's my favorite version of his theme so far (Despair).

I think many people had been avoiding it in this thread because it's SO spoiler-y.

That, or they didn't upgrade all the weapons. That's a lot of work. :)

But all of the Emil quests are great. The story regarding what happened with Emil and Kainé at the end of Kainé's life exists in graphic novel form ... if there's a scanlation out there, I'd love to see it.

But yeah, that final fight with Emil is absolutely nuts, and amazing, and I cried legit.

SO, I received my copy of the NieR: Automata OST in the mail today. And one thing I noticed was something special in the liner notes. Yoko Taro, ever the bizarre one, decided to leave *his* message to fans in Hexadecimal code. (Source: http://vgmdb.net/db/covers.php?do=view&cover=284712 -- you need a vgmdb account registered to see the image). Here it is, for your pleasure:

If you use *this tool*, (hex to text), it gives you a unicode message in Japanese: http://www.unit-conversion.info/texttools/hexadecimal/ -- might not want to do this til you reach true end.

in spoiler tag below I have the original Japanese, and then a VERY ROUGH (first-blush Google Translate) English conversion. If anyone would like to make a smoother English version, that'd be great.

Spoiler: show

ENGLISH (Google Translate):

"That place where it was was like heaven. There is no hatred grief, just a place like a warm hoarse. But, can we get permission to enter there? Dolls can not have original sin"

- From the last record left in 9S hardware memory -

A thought:

Spoiler: show

Yoko Taro isn't just adding a little character flavor to 9S IMO. I think Yoko Taro, despite wearing the Emil mask, might identify with 9S in many ways...

My Japanese is very basic, but I'll make a pass over it; if nothing else, I might irritate an actual Japanese speaker enough to incite them to correct my mistakes.
I think it begins in the middle of a word (probably intentionally, which I think consistent with the context, but one way or another, I couldn't parse it).  It starts with a quote mark, so it's not as if anything was missed in the source.
Spoiler: show

「[something something] place, it was just like heaven.  There was no hatred or sorrow, just a warm place in the sun.  But, I wonder if we can get permission to enter there?  Androids cannot even possess original sin.」

<From the last record remaining in 9S's hardware memory.>

Word of the day: ひだまり (sunny spot).

Done with the main endings today! Really enjoyed the game a lot, which was no surprise. Some general thoughts and questions...

(Spoilers for all endings under all sections. Open nothing if you don't want any spoilers.)

Endings A & B
Spoiler: show
Really loved the drama with 2B killing 9S, especially with the reveal in Ending C/D that 2B is actually 2E. Though I felt there was a missed opportunity to hammer home the intensity by showing other instances of 2B killing 9S. But minor gripe. I'm glad I did the side-quests that explains E-type units though, because I think otherwise the whole thing would have felt a bit forced. Hacking was an awesome mechanic and made the 9S playthrough feel significantly different to the 2B playthrough. Lots of things left unexplained, but no surprise since many were addressed in C and D.

Endings C,D & E
Spoiler: show
Glad they got a delete save data option in there somewhere (I did not delete mine at this time -- gotta do the side-quests). There were some good reveals at this stage and I was really hooked by this point. Loved A2 and the drama that went with her; wish we could have learned a bit more about her history and what she'd been up to pre-Automata. Her relationship with 9S was really good and a bit part of why I was glued to the ending, but I think 9S and 2B's relationship was just a little too weak to make his anger at A2 fully justifiable. Easy enough to let slide though. Oh, also, loved briefly visiting the library from Nier and the explanation of Popola and Devola.

Questions:
Spoiler: show
  • What was the point of Adam & Eve? They seemed to have no real overall plot relevance once you get to C & D.
  • What was up with the Tower? In Ending C is seems to just collapse on its own? I understand it was there to shoot 'stuff' into space, but I still didn't really get the overall purpose of doing that.
  • Did we ever find out how the aliens died? Did I miss that?
  • Who is the voice speaking to 9S and A2 in the tower and why is the male voice represented by two girls in red dresses?
  • Who started Project Yorha if humanity is dead and even the Commander doesn't know everything?

All-in-all, I really enjoyed Automata. A little slow to get started, but became really gripping (a lot like the first Nier, in that sense). The characters were much weaker than in the first game (though they're still pretty good), which was a shame, but the gameplay was so much better that it didn't really matter.
