Well this was sudden. According to the report, it was due to...a "bile duct growth"...I knew he had health problems, and that sounds pretty serious to me.

R.I.P., Iwata...May your legacy be in good hands, and your soul in good...commorancy...I guess, I'm really bad at this stuff...

Holy crap... that's so sudden.  RIP Iwata, you died much too young.  My condolences to his family and friends, and all the best to the company as it goes through such a sudden change.

Way too young.  Sorry to hear we've lost someone who contributed so much to the hobby we all love.

Well this is goddamn depressing.

Like the yellow fruit once held aloft and gazed upon, his time has passed. May his muppet carry on the eternal Balloon Fight.

But seriously. R.I.P.

If nothing else, you gotta respect a company president who cut his salary in half so he wouldn't have to lay anyone off when Nintendo was going through a rough patch.

RIP.

The guy was awesome in general. Was one of the old guard game designers, really embraced the idea transparency by engaging the fanbase with the Directs and getting postmortems through the Iwata Asks, and also had a good sense of humor with the E3 sketches, on top of things like the paycut and the willingness to step down if he couldn't turn the Wii U around in a year. That level of dedication is going to be hard to top.

That's not something I could ever have imagined reading today. Don't really know what to say that hasn't already been said.

GameCenter CX - NC017 - Balloon Fight

This is the best memory I have from Iwata. And is also one of the most fun episodes of the show too.

:(

I may not have always agreed with the things he said, but Iwata deserves respect. Lots of it. It's so rare to see representatives who actually have a history in videogame development. I'm going to miss those directs and E3 thingies.

The man was a CRAZY talented programmer. Iwata in no particular order...

-Managed to compress the code of Pokemon Gold/Silver just enough to squeeze in the entire Kanto region.
-Singlehandedly un-fucked Earthbound
-Recreated the Pokemon Gen 1 combat system, and ported it to Pokemon Stadium WITHOUT references.
-Spent 3 weeks debugging Super Smash Bros. Melee to ensure it came out on time.

Nintendo is facing the loss of an excellent guy here. My heart goes out to them.

Surprisingly, this was mainstream news in Montreal.

This one's a big old sad face. A sublime talent and personality lost.

Unsurprisingly, this was not mainstream news in the US (afaik).

I spotted the news on several major Dutch news sites, but half of them were kinda being dicks about it. "CEO died. Wii was a success, Wii U not so much." Like that.
