MAR/18: Favorite VGM Songs (Character Pg 5)
« on: August 05, 2015, 06:28:24 PM »
Hello all!  I've been wanting to do this topic for a while, so hopefully there will be a bit of a turn up, I hope to update it every so often with a new 'theme of the week' and just to get input on SPECIFIC game tunes you like most. Give a reason if you want, but most of all it'd be great just to see what you love to listen to.

So, I'll start basic.
GAME TITLE SCREENS
(not to be confused with 'introduction videos like Tales game openings or Chrono Cross's famous fiddling, or any other cinematic or introduction).

Final Fantasy IX - The Place I'll Return to Someday
https://youtu.be/vW3QK6CTg2g
This piece is very charming and nostalgic in its own right and immediately nails the sort of "tale of olde" feel that the atmosphere tries to immediately set up.  The various versions of it in the game are just as lovely as well.

Final Fantasy X-2 - Memories of Lightwaves
https://youtu.be/RjOEl-sAsjw
In some ways I think this song is "too good" for a game that's sometimes as 'tacky' as FFX-2 is.  I love the way it shows parts of characters (sans their faces) to identify them as the song plays on and then it finished with the one drum hit as the actual title screen is displayed.  It's a gorgeous and simple tune that stays in your head.

Venus & Braves - Title Theme
https://youtu.be/GwE2RGGupcU
Borrowing notes from its main theme "A Waltz for Ariah", is a very simple and short version of the tune that, much like FF9's theme, really sets up the atmosphere for the game.

Mass Effect 2 - Title Screen
https://youtu.be/VYtj38KQxm4
The strange sound at the beginning really builds beautifully into the very heroic intro.  Honourable mention does go to ME3 as well on this though as well.

Kingdom Hearts - Dearly Beloved
https://youtu.be/TG1pRNQAByI
I picked the II version, something about the relaxed visual and gentle start really make it for me.  What's there to say?  It's a beautiful tune and I do admire how it gets played throughout the game to sort of 'unify' the heroes in key moments.

Uncharted - Main theme (I went with 2)
https://youtu.be/FLXVcDMdCKo
Love or hate the series, it nails that modern-Indiana Jones vibe.  The theme has a great drum line, and features a great 'over the mountain' sort of melody.  Makes me pumped to seek out treasure and nearly die trying

Halo - Introduction
https://youtu.be/Z5yVOFokLVY
I think it's the sort of multi-cultural flare that was both surprising to hear and surprisingly lovely.  Love it.

Honourable Mentions:
Zelda: ALttP.  I love the intro, it's what I grew up on.  It's not long and I hate the song that plays when giving the plot background which is just 'blah'
Odin Sphere. When a game sets out to be one of the best looking 2D games, I'm glad it has a beautiful title screen to match complete with vocalist "Ahh"-ing the main tune.
Diddy's Kongquest.  I love how it's both a unique theme but also gets a bit into 'medley mode'.

GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!

No joke, I've been trying to refine the idea for such a topic for a couple weeks now. I just didn't know the best way to work out the details, like whether to do themes by the week or the month or whatever.

I'm happy someone posted it though, I'm excited!

Memories of Lightwaves and Dearly Beloved are definitely my two favorites, but I'll also throw out Final Fantasy Tactics while I think of other possible examples.

Fuck.  I forgot the FFT one.  Definitely a highlight, I remember my brother learning that one back in the day too

FF Tactics and Katamari Damacy are both all-time classics for title screen menu music.  Here are a few of my other favorites:

Secret of Mana
XenoBlade Chronicles
Battle Toads & Double Dragon
Street Fighter II
Toe Jam & Earl: Panic on Funkotron - not NEARLY as good as the first game, but the opening theme is a bit funkier

...I really like early 90s WOMPWOMPWOMP electric guitar samples, okay!?

My favorite title screen music is easily Double Dragon.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoJ7YFUotTA

Another one I immediately thought of was Phantasy Star IV.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HR_dtc3xL_c

Phantasy Star I's is also classic.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdrAw3EE-CM

Phantasy Star II and III were no slouches either.  II: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbRORnX_MQk

Love this one too.  For the most part, the games that avoided the standard 'Zelda theme' intros have been quite lovely.
https://youtu.be/i9XAveg-vYM Video Game Pianist does a very lovely version, in general he's a great musician (and I do love the fan renditions of songs that focus on the musician, I love seeing how often they 'emote' as they play).

My favorite title screen music is easily Double Dragon.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoJ7YFUotTA

Hell. Yes.

Secret of Mana
XenoBlade Chronicles

Xenoblade, much like I took Odin Sphere, is made partly the music and partly by the visual accompanying it (not to say it isn't great on its own too of course).  Great choice.
And yeah, Secret of Mana.  Again to bring up my brother, but I find it funny when you see how our interests in things can 'take root' at a young age.  My brother adored this song, when he got a mini electric keyboard for Christmas one year he tried learning that too.

Definitely Odin Sphere.  I love that music.

Also:

Radiant Historia

Persona 3 - Brand New Days

Katamari Damacy

The Katamari scat bit is so brilliant.  Na naaaa nanananana na na na naa na na na duntinditnditngindting~
Both P3 and 4's use of piano are really lovely for what's otherwise a pretty electric OST.

Forgot to respond to this earlier, but yeah, I was still planing it as you were too. xD
I actually kinda had to 'find the courage' a bit to do it. :S

Ragnarok Online

Is it weird that this one actually pisses me off?  I think it's because, back in days of yore (back in, holy crap, early 2000s), when Internet wasn't so good I remember getting locked out of servers a ton and just sitting and waiting with that song on.  I do (or did) like it, but it doesn't actually bring happy memories. xD

omg, the Tetris art says "From Russia with Fun"....

Get your last picks in, I'm gonna be changing to topic soon!!

lol, I think anyone who plays or played mmos can relate to that feeling Dice.  At some point whether it is  the game or your nets fault the end result is frustratingly staring at the log in screen.

Gargoyle's Quest II on the NES have an absolute icy, gothic synth opening. Very cool.

Final Fantasy IX - The Place I'll Return to Someday

Really love 9 music overall. Great pick. Gives a real sense of the upcoming adventure.

Venus & Braves - Title Theme

Never have heard of this game but I really like the music. Very soft yet grand.

Uncharted - Main theme (I went with 2)

Love the adventure of this piece as well. Really gets you ready.

Zelda: ALttP.

It's amazing to me how good this sounds despite the hardware. They were very masterful.

My contribution:
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Trilogy
Manages to encapsulate so many themes from the games, getting you ready for the "epic" court showdown. I love AA music overall.

NORMAL BATTLE THEME
What's the theme you listened to a few hundred times --- and that you DIDN'T you get sick of?

Digital Devil Saga 2 - Battle for Survival
https://youtu.be/m9LnM9j_WwA
Oh mein GOTT  Won't lie, I bought the game after I heard this (well, that and the hub-bub about the first game).  I saw a battle play out to this tune and decided to take a chance on it.  I love it.  A beautiful mix of techno synth and electric guitar, a catchy melody that never seemed to wear out.

Star Ocean 3 - The Cutting Edge of Notion
https://youtu.be/kFj-zNYb9n4
I'm a fan of the organ.  And oh man, this makes battle themes sound like when a garage rock band got together with the local organist from a baseball stadium and I love it.  And this game will have you fighting a LOT, but it's too good.

Bravely Default - Bell of Battle
https://youtu.be/3VXI2MF30zU
It's just too well composed.  Again the combination of rock n roll with some orchestrated elements is a beautiful blend.

Xenoblade X - Z37 Battle
https://youtu.be/7cf2jNiXJXk
The initial chaos is...a bit tough (I kinda like it in context as a 'fight or flight' moment for enemy engagement), afterwards (30 sec mark) starts some epic strings that really makes you feel like you're fighting for survival or something crazy

Shadow of the Colossus - Revived Power
https://youtu.be/ParUJ9Ll7dk
Unreal tune, it works TOO well in context, even when it's got that mechanical sound in the background going on (around 1 min in).  You feel like you can turn the odds as a puny man against something hundreds of feet taller than you. :P

---
Honourable Mentions:
FF: Mystic Quest - Battle 1:   It's just...the cutest and coolest battle theme ever.
Tales of the Abyss - And the Arrow was Shot:  I like the remixes better, but this gets HM for a cool name.

Dishonourable Mention:
> Chrono Trigger/Cross (both)... it's...okay I guess.  They both kinda fail the test because I got sick of both of them.  Trigger just sounds too much like nothing (I guess in a way it works for it's non-specific-time-period-sound), while Cross relies too much on a high-pitched fiddle that works the first few times, but you may tire of after the first dungeon.  Trigger lacks a memorable melody, and Cross exhausts listeners with some very fast-paced playing.
> Xenoblade (Time to Fight), yeah the standard Bionis theme does nothing for me.  Maybe, again, I just don't like the many violins playing some high notes, but it doesn't help that it OFTEN gets in the way of much more pleasant field music.  Sorry Shimomura, you know I love you for just about everything else, right?
