HAPPY 10TH ANNIVERSARY TO TALES OF LEGENDIA.

In honour of it, I think it'd be a shame not to include the truly wonderful and orchestrated main battle track this one had:

I love the soundtrack to Legendia. I've never had the chance to play it, though.

I prefer the original Baten Kaitos soundtrack as a whole. It's probably my favourite soundtrack ever but The Valedictory Elegy is damn good.

See, I totally agree. Heck, I think I might even like True Mirror better than Valedictory Elegy. Yet, I sorta had to disqualify it since I got SUPER sick of hearing it in game since battles in BK1 took super long and I was not having fun.

Good haul right there.  Special mention to the short but powerful Sigma Harmonics tracks as well

Yeah, I understand. The guitar version on the other hand...

Eternal Sonata - Leap the Precipice (Motoi Sakuraba)

I forgot about this! Good choice.

FIELD/WORLD MAP THEME

World maps are pretty RPG, so I also wanted to include general 'fields' as well (Zelda's hubs or MMO areas that aren't towns/dungeons).

Tales of Destiny - Unfinished World
https://youtu.be/nReC5279E6Y
I *love* this song.  There's the more 'refined' PS2 version, but I like this one for being just a little bit 'noisier', which works for the cute SD sprites and the large amount of goofy dialogue in Destiny.  But also I love how it captures that "setting out for adventure" sound right off the bat.  It's not particularly pretty sounding, but it's fun and charming as hell!

Breath of Fire III - Casually
https://youtu.be/Pe3Sr4JmMXw
I really don't like the adult version of this song, it's too sad and I really don't like sad music.  But I really like the 'young Ryu arc' song!  It's just so...suave sounding, and it's weird how jazz fusion is really working well despite the peculiar setting/time period Breath of Fire III is set in.

Chrono Trigger - Peaceful Days
https://youtu.be/0Lo8Q5tL0WQ
I sometimes hear this song when I wake up to a beautiful morning and open my curtains (no I'm not copying the game, it's for the plants, haha xD ).  It's really pleasant, and despite going through time travel hell and back, this song and the first town in Chrono Trigger always has this settling theme.  That said, I hate the theme when you immediately step outside of the 'town limits'.

You have my apologies for this next batch:
Xenoblade
https://youtu.be/_GGauFENCmQ Field of the Machinae
https://youtu.be/AE0hhzASHwY Satorl Marsh (Night)
https://youtu.be/tUolGe3ZZMg Colony 9 (Night)
A ton of the Xenoblade field songs are extremely pleasant and work very well.  I think that's partly why it's so annoying when battle music intervenes...  But anyways, they capture some excellent moods and the day/night varietals push the envelop that much more to adding substance and atmosphere to a visually-rich game.

Shadow Hearts - Blow Up
https://youtu.be/v7UO5Zg-Jis
I mean, the song is called "Blow Up" so I think that's a pretty good start.  I hate using this word, but given the time period the game is set in, I love how exotic this sounds, simultaneous being both modern and very 'old country' sounding.  I feel like I'm going on an odyssey.

There's a few others I'd be dying to put, but I wanna hear what you guys like.  And if they go unmentioned I'll abruptly post again. :P

---
Honourable Mentions:
Comfortable Journey - Tales of Vesperia & New World - Tales of the Abyss:   I like quite a few of the world map themes from the Tales series, they're very quaint and lovely and filled with a great sense of adventure.  Sometimes the themes change, I actually kinda hate that, they sound way too serious. :(

Dishonourable Mention:
Sylvarant - Tales of Symphonia: Dear god, how this has so many likes and hits on YouTube alludes me, it sounds like it belongs on Dora the Explorer or some other kid's show.  It's so kiddy sounding.
Return of the Evil Mist - Final Fantasy IX: Eugh...credit where it's due, it suits the context of the game... but going from the main theme to this for the last stretch of the game is awful.
North Crater - Final Fantasy VII:  AUGH.  Again, it suits, it SUITS SO DAMN WELL.  But the song makes me want to slit my wrists and be done with it.  At least before a certain event the airship theme would still "take over", but hearing this and only this is so depressing, regardless of context.

You know what irritates me?  I'm enjoying listening to the world map music, and them *BAM*, there's a random enemy encounter, and it cuts to the battle music.  Those abrupt transitions totally harsh my mellow.  Anyway, here's everything I can think of at the moment.

(I'm not quite sure how to distinguish field themes from dungeon themes in FF12, so I'll just pretend all the enclosed areas are dungeons, and save them for later.)

FF12 - The Cerobi Steppe.  One of the more idyllic themes from 12, and it fits the scenery perfectly.

FF12 - The Feywood.  I find this simultaneously beautiful and unnerving.

FFT - World Map.  Although it can get a little repetitive, this induces in me an almost Zen-like tranquility.

Odin Sphere - World Map.  A melancholy track, which fits Odin Sphere quite well.

Ni no Kuni - World Map.  I wish more games had symphonic soundtracks...

Aww, I actually really like the second world map theme in Vesperia, though I agree the original is just a little better and wish this one only lasted for a little bit after Brave Vesperia was formed, but for that moment in the game I feel like this one really fits well.

FF12 - The Cerobi Steppe.  One of the more idyllic themes from 12, and it fits the scenery perfectly.

Speaking of Steppes, one of my favorites (and yes, I consider this an overworld theme) is Final Fantasy XIII's The Archylte Steppe. It's a uniquely wispy version of the game's main theme that does an amazing job of conveying the sudden freedom and "fresh air" atmosphere of Gran Pulse.

I wish I had a better memory for these things because I know there were certainly more I enjoyed but I can't recall them.

Yes yes yes yes yes. Ni no Kuni's especially.

Main Theme - FFVII - Probably the most predictable choice ever but I'll never forget the first time I came out onto the world map in VII and heard this piece of music. My favourite track in the game by a mile.

Corridors of Time - Chrono Trigger Another favourite in the whole game. I love the mystical theme it exudes. It's just a damn excellent track.

That's all I can think of for now...

Chrono Cross -  On the Beach of Dreams ~ Another World
Persona 2 Eternal punishment world map1

These, definitely.  The Chrono Cross one especially.  I would often just stand around on the overworld just to hear the music.

I did that in Eternal Punishment as well.  I love Innocent Sin's overworld theme as well.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CU_KneL2qac

I don't know if it's because we were talking about Star Ocean a lot lately, but Star Ocean 2's overworld theme got stuck in my head.  It's so heroic sounding: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gB05cDOpndc

And I have to give a nod to Phantasy Star 2 as well.  Dezo's theme was haunting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StCBMaVWgHY \

And no overworld theme thread would be complete without "Searching for Friends" from FF6: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-ClGdaICGI

Dice's Selections

Tales of Destiny - Unfinished World
Why does this remind me of Illusion of Gaia?  O__o
Dice was right about it not being "pretty-sounding", as I initially didn't like it.  But as I listened, it began to evoke a certain feeling.  A certain charm.  Hard to describe, but I think a good World Map theme should do this.

Breath of Fire III - Casually
One of my all-time favorite VG tracks ever, and I have never even played BoFIII.  How did I come to love it, you ask?  Nobody asked, but I'll explain anyways.  In my college days, I stumbled across this remix of it and fell in love immediately.  Put it on a mixtape and have had it in my listening rotation for YEARS.  I actually think this might be my very first time hearing the original.  It holds up REALLY well.  Thanks, Dice.

Chrono Trigger - Peaceful Days
God, Mitsuda is so good.

Xenoblade stuff
Field of the Machinae reminds me of FTL.  That's a good thing.  I like a little ambiance in my field themes sometimes, and this is a good one.  Ooooh, I'm even detecting a little bit of Metroid Prime in there.  This is REALLY nice!  Like... like, I am really insanely enjoying this right now.  Which of Xenoblade's 4 composers can be credited with this masterpiece?  ACE+?  Who or what is that?
Dang it... how can I ever play this game without breaking the bank?
Satorl Marsh (Night) feels a little like Mitsuda, but I know he only did 1 track for XBC.  I doubt it was a random field theme.  *looks*  It was Manami Kotiya.  Impressive stuff.  What else has Kotiya done?
The acoustic feel of Colony 9 (Night) is most welcome after the previous two.  Not immediately recognizable as Shimomura's work, but I think that's a credit to what she accomplished with this piece.  Props to Dice for including field themes from the three major XBC composers.

Shadow Hearts - Blow Up
Not a fan of Shadow Hearts or its music, in general.  Unfortunately, that doesn't change here.

Tales of Vesperia - Comfortable Journey
Tales and Star Ocean have very similar flavors to their field themes.  For me, these kinds of themes are like popcorn: simple, but comforting, and I crave them in combination with something sweet.

Tales of the Abyss - New World
See above

As for Dice's Dishonorable Mentions.... meh.  Nostalgia would significantly improve that Symphonia track, and I have no issue with the two ominous FF tracks.  I actually think they're both good.  I like to get strong flavors from music, and Uematsu's stuff, especially in the PS1 Golden Age, have some of the most powerful flavors in all VGM.

I respectfully disagree.  I LOVED Symphonia, it was one of my favorite RPGs of the era, I reviewed it very favorably, it did almost everything right, but the music was utterly forgettable.  Not bad, mind, you, but I don't remember any of it.  I couldn't hum any of it to you.  I could recall plot points I liked, overworld skits I found amusing, interesting locations, gameplay elements I liked, but none of the music.  Symphonia is a happy nostalgic game for me, but it won't be music bringing me those feelings.
